I'll admit I've broken out the mortar and pestle once before for some small specialty grains, was a good workout.

Corona corn mills! Can be had for as little as $30 bucks, adjustable crush, easy to maintenance and to store . The only downside is that they come with a manual crank. But you can even upgrade that to run off of a drill.

Hey 🙃Great video 👍 The only one you missed was the corona mill. And that's damn good if you use dried corn kernels in your brew. Happy brewing out there !

Good overview of options. I’d love a dedicated powered mill, but one negative you missed about such a powered mill mounted on a stand is the dedicated floor space it takes up. Is why I never considered one being a brewer brewing in a multipurpose space.

Why did you not include the old hand crank mill?

if you have a Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer, they make a Grain Mill Attachment (it works). Thanks to Doug Piper and Gourmet Brewing for telling me about it.

You could use the rolling pin to precrush barley malt. Sieve the husks. And then coffee grind the endosperm to dust

Can also use the grain mill attachment for juicers and KitchenAid type rigs. Very slow but the Champion juicer works great

I have my local homebrew store mill it for me. So they can mill it extra fine since I brew in a bag it’s no issue. Every now and then I’ll order from northern brewer they don’t mill like I would like but they have the malts my local store doesn’t

Watching from baltics! Great video! I have been using makita regular drill for my adjustable grain mill a while, and i find that drill is not pushed to the limit when grinding for my 50liters batch, wich is usually 12-13kg of malt. I use speed setting 1 since mill does not require a lot of speed, like you said, torque is the important value!

kinda surprised you didn't suggest a burr grinder. Sure, it's still a grinder, but it's adjustable and a coarse grind setting could do. Another option is the kitchen aid flour mill on the coarse setting. I've used it and it's perfect for BIAB.

I've had a 1/2 bulk crushed grain bag approx 12kg for nearly 2 years and risked doing a batch bit it has been sealed in the original bag and stored in a sealed plastic tub. Have to be honest, i brewed a 40 litre batch & both came out fine.

Just received my first batch of milled grains and now I'm looking to do it myself...after paying for milling I somehow got whole grains and flour not much in-between. I got a 48%efficiency had to get sketchy to try reach anywhere near my numbers😂😂😂 first all grain batch with other people's mill size and definitely the last!!! I'd rather spend 10h with a rolling pin but I've got a better idea till I get a mill!

A rolling pin works for me, it's a bit tedious though, especially for big batches, someday I'll splurge for the mill. I only have a limited space where I live so even if I could get a mill It’s not a good idea.

For stouts, I grind the roasted barley to powder with the blade coffee grinder. So the grinder has a place in my brewery.

Those are all great options, but I always go back to my trusty hammer mill and mash filter (possibly kidding). Cheers!

I got a batch of grains from Northern Brewer that were supposed to be crushed, but weren't. I ended up processing 9lbs of malt in my coffee grinder. Took me an hour, but it ended up making a good Hefe.

My maltzilla had seized bearings. Had to get wd40 with silicone to lubricate and unrust. Not something you want to happen on brew day.

Poor neglected Corona…😢 I modified mine to use a drill AND with a piece of sheet metal and some self-tapping screws extended the hopper to hold about 10lbs of grain. It takes me about 3 times as long as the Blichmann (I mean, 3 minutes!). Come to think of it, I bet I’ve crushed literally a ton of grains through my Corona mill. 😂. Cost me $25 in 1993!

You lack of another option there. it is (at least in my country) socold flour mill. that was my first grain mill it worked ok when i learned it. most because it was cooked as hell. First example i could find ( not the one i had) is Kinghoff KH-1425. completely different design. but with some modificati(i.e. addin screw to fit your drill) it works the same

Before anyone spends a dime on a grain crusher with a metal hopper. Be wary of assembly requirements. I could not assemble mine. Trying to thread all of those tiny screws was causing a lot of pain in my hands. I had to return it. If you have carpal tunnel then you might want to go to a local brew shop, buy it there, and ask them to assemble it for you. Otherwise you are in for a world of pain trying to put one of these things together.
