The creatures don't kill people very fast. Everyone we saw attacked by these monsters died slowly and in agony. And David's son made David promise not to let the monsters take him. They were alone in the middle of nowhere, no fuel, no food, no sign of an end to the Mist, no sign that anyone was coming to rescue them. They all decided that a quick death was preferable. That was the wrong decision, but it wasn't stupid.

Yeah they were just saying the mist has spread all over the world and it wasn’t going to clear up. And that’s just the impression watching the movie… imagine being there! Then, knowing the outcome they say it was a stupid decision. Of course in hindsight it was.

He is "stupid" because he didn't want to let his friends and own son become food for aliens bugs? Imagine what it would be like to be eaten alive by creatures. They would rip into your face, torso, and limbs while you are still actively trying to preserve yourself. Its true you would die, but not die right away and would be very present to see your own body shredded up like a cloth. It seems to me anyone that would allow their own loved ones to become food for aliens while they take the easiest way out is the cruelest person. He at least used the rounds on everyone else and was left to suffer the death of being eaten alive. That was stupid?

Exactly, or they could have been used to have eggs and spiders planted in them. BTW, the decision to shoot them was not the wrong one. He promised his son he would not let the monsters get him, and the odds of that had just reached near 100%. So it was a choice between dying horribly in that car after the monsters found them, or use those bullets now and save them all from a certain torturous death. Waiting even five minutes would have risked the latter eventuality, since they already knew how quickly the monsters could find people. Even running would have likely meant a horrific death for them and his son.

What makes the ending even worse, is when you realize his son saw it coming. Go back and watch, the camera is on the kid sleeping, he opens his eyes, starts to look towards his father, then his eyes start to widen, the camera view switches to the outside where you see the flash and hear the shot. The kid woke up to see a gun pointed at his head for a split sec. That just makes the ending even more heart breaking

He is not stupid. It could happen. Even Stephen King loves the ending, which is different from his original. The film shows human beings trapped in extremely desperate and terrifying situation, and shows how difficult to make the right decision and how helpless humans are. in the case of the woman looking for help save her children when the mist first hit. It would have been definitely difficult decision if the father left the store with the woman. Even most people watching the movie would have thought it was stupid to go with her. But as a result, she and the children survived. Who could have known the result? In fact, The director of the movie, Frank Darabont made it into a series, which is 'Walking Dead' has same theme as this film. Many of the actors in this movie appear in The Walking Dead. Darabont tried to cast Thomas Jane as the main character in the Walking Dead, but Jane was cast in another series on HBO at the time. So Rick Grimes, who looks similar to him, was cast in the Walking Dead.

With acid webs, poison, eggs being laid in you while you are alive, etc. I understand wanting to die before that happens. Imagine how much torture it is to have your flesh burned and eggs growing inside of you for like 2 days? That sounds like hell. The only reason why some ppl think that it will clear up is because its a movie. But in real life there is no reason to think it will clear up quickly. Just a few minutes before you guys were saying you thought it had spread across the world. The only reason it clears up is because after shooting everyone it makes sense storywise for it to clear up. But in real life events dont happen because it makes sense storywise. There is no story that needs to be ended neatly. There is no reason for him to think they will be saved in time. The odds of them being saved before they get visciously killed is so incredibly low. It just works that way because it makes the story more tragic but the actual probability of that happening is so tiny.

9.3/10 This King adaptation gets it right I was very impressed by this adaptation of Stephen King's 'The Mist'. I have been a fan of the story since it came out and have played the text game and have heard the 3-D audio version of it. This is a masterful suspense/monster movie that puts an ensemble cast into the untenable situation of being in a deteriorating situation they cannot escape from. We watch as alliances are formed, religious paranoia takes hold and, nicely, the movie takes the time to establish characters whom we come to care for before the true action begins. I dock it a couple of points because some of the monsters seemed a little too cgi, and the middle lags a bit, but the much talked about ending is indeed awesome and I was most impressed by the director's decision to keep the music soundtrack down and even eliminate it completely during many of the action sequences. So many movies nowadays crank the music up to 11 to make up for the fact that their suspense scenes do not work. This movie does. I was breathlessly on the edge of my seat for most of it, even though I was already familiar with the story. Highly recommended.

I also believe that one of the biggest messages the movie had was missed here, which was that there weren't just monsters outside but that the humans were also monsters. Ok... No... Those of you calling him stupid are simply ignorant or haven't read the book. He's NOT stupid. In fact, he was the only one in the supermarket that showed initiative in any other way than sacrifice and ritualistic and cruel practices by the people being exponentially swayed more and more by Mrs. Carmody's paranoia. The film AND book are meant to portray the struggle and problems people may face if everything they know to exist suddenly disappeared and there was no knowledge of what was happening. How people either come together for survival, or cast others out in order to survive by pointing fingers until it lands on them. People who haven't read the( basically 1 to 1, scene for scene as if they used the novella as a script for the film) novella, please understand it's adapting to a big screen and NOTE THAT IN THE MOVIE THE ENDING IS NOT THE ENDING FROM THE BOOK AND IS THE ONLY THING THAT STEPHEN KING GAVE PERMISSION TO BE CHANGED IN THE ENTIRE SCRIPT. This is because the book ending is more hopeful, without spoiling anything. However, as good of an ending as it was for a Stephen King BOOK, particularly the ending would not have wrapped up a FILM very well and would have left audience members almost with a cliffhanger scenario. The bravery and horror (which is much more detailed and fleshed out in the novella, and we get to read the main character's thoughts) that he went through as a protagonist WHILE with a wife and kid and no control over how their demise would come, but knowing it would at some point soon, drove him to the breaking point. Also side note: Why would he ever be stupid for making his son's death instantaneous and painless rather than be horridly brutalized and eviscerated or eaten by an ungodly terrifying monster? Wouldn't ANYBODY rather choose the shoot option? Why would somebody on god's green earth EVER choose "Decimated painfully and lengthily by a horrifying monster that came out of another dimension," over the choice of, "Just shoot me in the head and I'll be dead before I even hear the full bang that the gun makes... ? HE WAS A HERO AT THE END SACRIFICING HIMSELF SO EACH OTHER PERSON CAN DIE INSTANTLY AND WITHOUT PAIN... Also, a hero (if you look up 'outline of hero's journey stories on google) of a story always needs a "fatal flaw," which acts in a way where a trait that is seen to be a strength or a positive thing the protagonist does. This often brings way to a "Tragic Hero," character in which his strength came back around and bit him in the ass. The main character's positive but fatal flaw was that he cared so much about his son he wouldn't ever bat an eyelid in regards to waiting for him to experience a gruesome death and the sight of the monsters. Because of this, he was too ready and too quick to pull the trigger. JUST REMEMBER THE BOOK'S ENDING IS DIFFERENT AND LEAVES ROOM FOR HOPE. THIS ENDING IS NOT THE 'TRUE ENDING' one could say quite honestly.

I hope these "as we go" helps 1. In context it is similar to what King did with The Stand except in this case it's monsters and not a virus. 2. Jeffery DeMunn is known as a favorite of director Frank Darabont, who has cast him in all four of his films: "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994), "The Green Mile" (1999), and "The Mist" (2007). All King adaptations. He was also in what King himself says "Storm of the Century" was such a good screenplay that he adapted into a book. 3. William Sadler also was in "Shawshank" and "The Green Mile". 4. Frances Sternhagen was in "Misery" by King. 5. Marcia Gay Harden kills it. 6.King wanted to play the big guy that goes out with the rope around his waist "brass balls" but Darabont shot him down. 7. This is not how the book ends. Darabont wanted this ending. King later said that as horrific that it is he likes it better. What makes this ending more devastating is he has to live with it the rest of his life 🥵 8. The picture of the cowboy is an Easter egg from King's "Dark Tower" series 9. The cool thing about this story is, since the creatures are from a different dimension, they could be anything. 10. Stephen King. You're welcome.

Exactly, the scene before they saw that big thing which helped them realize exactly whats going on. They thought they couldn't step one foot out the car. Case and point when he merely reached out to get the gun. Yeah when I saw that Im thinking they next sstep is to live in car forever starve to death (horrible) or eat each other then starve too death

Calling the main character stupid is easy but, as far as the five of them in the car knew, the choice was to suffer horrific deaths from the monsters or the quickness of a single bullet. Yes, if they waited they'd have been fine but they had no way of knowing it would pass. If it hadn't passed, letting the monsters kill them would have been cruel.

It's very easy to call this decision stupid knowing the result and sitting on a comfortable sofa, I don't know if you noticed, but the aliens in this film kill you in a slow and extremely painful and agonizing way, that's if they haven't laid eggs for you yet, imagine being torn apart and torn apart while still alive, it would be better to leave quickly and easily than to be caught by those monsters.

This movie does an extremely good job at portraying how primitive people are and that in a dire situation, if and when people are scared enough they will turn to anything or anyone that offers a solution, with the whole religion cult thing. This movie does an extremely good job at portraying the realistic aspect of that.

lol they don’t get that he only shot them so that they won’t suffer being eating alive by other worldly monsters. I wouldn’t want my son to be eaten alive. People need to stop thinking about what they would’ve have done none of yall would know what to do in that situation lmao. What he did was probably the most realistic thing to do. People saying oh he should’ve waited that is not logical. There was no signs of them being saved so it was no point in waiting.

It’s only easy to be mad at him in hindsight. For all he knows there was no help coming. Sure had he waited 5 minutes he’d be saved but it could have gone the other way, in the next 5 minutes some other creature could kill them brutally. Like you guys said, the mist could have spread all over the world. A quick death is merciful compared to what the creatures would have done.

No one wanted to play host to these hellish creatures and be tortured as living incubators. He ended their lives quickly and painlessly and would have ended his own had he one more bullet. He just got it wrong. He couldn't have known. Tragic irony.

What's especially impressive to me about the ending is that it was completely different, and yet better, than the one in King's original story. Also, the fact that Darabont also adapted and directed The Shawshank Redemption. Polar opposite movies.

Funny you mention zombies. The director went on to be the showrunner on the first season of The Walking Dead TV series. He cast three actors from this movie in it. Also, the guy that played the soldier that got sacrificed was appeared as only a zombie after his part got cut. And the lead actor here was supposed to be the lead in the TV show but he was booked by the time a network picked up the show.

Actually, the person who was right was the woman who left early to save her kids. When things go to hell, those who stick to their morals completely and without fear are the only victors. Any person in that store could have survived simply by showing courage when it truly counted for something. Everyone who died and the final man, at some point, was in it for themselves, especially the maniacal heretic woman, honestly she was scarier than any monster within the mist, and this is coming from a religious person.
