Telling the tale of the adventures of King Gilgamesh and his trustworthy friend Enkidu.
"The epic of Gilgamesh, the oldest written story, known to exist. The oldest Existing versions of this poem dates back to 2000 BC in Sumerian cuneiform. While a complete version dates back to 700 BC in the Akkadian language. Even though the texts themselves were lost for thousands of years, the tale had still spread through to Europe and Asia. Even the Greeks and the Romans mentioned king Gilgamesh as late as 200 AD. The story was rediscovered in 1839 by a British archeologist, Austen Layard, leading to the uncovering of much of the lost Mesopotamian civilizations."

They sat that we all have immortal souls. Maybe not immortal flesh yet, but if our consciousness survives forever then God must have ro place them somewhere. If the lake if fire is true I pray that God takes away all pain. And it's going to be very boring stuck in a hot lake. Alot of things don't make any sense but neither does evil in anyway and that actually exists. Sooo were screwed in the long run unless we follow Jesus the christ.

Ego. He was a god after all. How would a little mortal even grow enough to carry the balls it would take to challenge a god not with words but to the death. Why would the only value given to mortals being their mortal life be so readily discarded if not for their beliefs be true to them. Any god would hear you out if you were willing to die for your beliefs as it’s the only thing they have you don’t. Or the thing you have they don’t. :3

I didn't understand why we had to read this back in middle school, but I think I get it now. The oldest known story of humanity is a tale of overcoming hubris, devoted friendship, existential dread, and acceptance of mortality. It's hard proof these things are fundamental to the human experience.

@@YT-User1013 Stories are reflections of the people who tell them. Thousands of years ago, people were contemplating the same concepts that we still do today. Assyrian/Akkadian Genies frequently wore bracelets with a flower on what would be the "face" of the "watch." It symbolized fertility, since that was the symbol of the goddess of fertility, and these Genies went around fertilizing the land. They frequently had them around both wrists, and sometimes even their head, all at the same time. s3.amazonaws.com/brooklynmuseumorg-ask/mobile-uploads/18687D9A-FBF2-42CB-87DD-A5DFB66790C6.png 4.bp.blogspot.com/-rKSjy_95QII/USlnh6czdKI/AAAAAAAAAbE/_mAoMfKgYmk/s1600/WingedGenie.jpg

Fascinating idea. It wouldn't be unreasonable to suggest that there might be an undiscovered or destroyed work that may have inspired this. It may also be (and I find it likely) that the Epic of Gilgamesh is really a collection/re-telling of one or more tales that were passed down orally before written records existed or were prominent. I guess we won't know until further evidence crops up to suggest an answer.

Just like writing a script for a movie, it is possible there was a first draft of the story. Of course, finding proof of this is a whole other matter entirely. Look up cave paintings, they are estimated to be between 40,000 to 14,000 years old. It is not consider writing, but it does convey an early form of a story.

A somewhat different version than I had read before. On the way home, Gilgamesh falls asleep against a tree, the immortality plant in his lap. The snake slithers through, eats the plant, and sheds it's skin in Gilgamesh's lap. Gilgamesh wakes to find the snakeskin, and weeps. I also recall a scene where Enkidu is at the gates of hell, awaiting judgment. The walls of hell are lined with the crowns of kings and the robes of priests, but we never find out about Enkidu's fate.

Check out the extensive photos of statues in other offerings of early Mesopotamia. Copper was the metal back then, tin was not alloyed in yet. The wrist decoration was a flat band of copper with the fertility flower on the outside of the wrist, upper arm, lower arm and ankle. The band usually overlapped about an inch when squeezed around the limb. If removed often it would have to be annealed so it would not break under continued bending. Also, a pair of copper knives for harvesting and a bag with a handle were pictured in almost all the ceremonial statures. Meanwhile, whole companies of slingers were pictured in battle carvings, slings could outperform bows under most conditions. These were all very high tech status items back then. Proud of them they were.

@sciencedavedunning3415
@sciencedavedunning3415 Жыл бұрын
The interpretation I got was that Utnapishtim knew Gilgamesh was a liar, Gilgamesh did not therefore trust Utnapishtim fully, and wanted to test the plant on some unsuspecting soul before he ( Gilgamesh ) dared to eat the possibly poisonous plant himself. Had he had faith, Gilgamesh would've eaten the plant immediately, and the snake wouldn't have had opportunity to steal it.

There is one common humanity. People are people. We're all different, but we're all people. We experience similar events differently. The story we tell about something may be different than the way someone else may tell it. For any number of different reasons. Different perspectives. Different sources. Your mother may tell a different story about your birth than your father. Other people from your neighborhood, your village may tell a different story about your family than the story your family tells you. The tue story or the ruth is not necessarily told by who tells the story first, or even who should know the story better. "Religions" generally claiming their story to be true/the truth would have you believe in its story, if you are a "follower" of a particular religion. The books called the bible is not a religion. They Are writings written, copied and translated by different people, over different times, written for different reasons. Keep reading, searching, living, learning and understanding people. You will know the truth of people and the truth of their stories. People usually only tell what they want you to know. The thing I find about the stories of and about the people the children family of the man known in the bible as Israel, is it is not the kind of stories or story you would tell if you wanted to impress people as to how good and how great a people you were. That is why it is what it is the way it it is. Inspired writings. Some by despised people. People you may not be very impressed with if you actually knew them. Some People you may have even wanted to kill, and some were.

The Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh is an amazing tale in many respects, particularly because, firstly it represents the OLDEST fiction (which we are aware of) that was ever written, secondly because it clearly represents the source of biblical (as well as texts of most other religions') stories - such as the deluge brought to Earth to destroy (a bad) mankind, and thirdly because of its morality, showing the personal journey of a bad, evil ruler (a selfish demi-god) who is eventually transformed into a good, selfless man!

@@gabemcghee9378 I mean, there's no evidence for a worldwide flood. There was frequent flooding in that area in general because it was a river valley so logically they'd develop a flood myth, just like how every culture develops a sun myth due to seeing the sun every day. The boat/chosen family thing, however, was most likely copied. Chances are humanity could not have survived if one small family was responsible for repopulating a region.

This was the equivalent to ancient people's science fiction. Although there are many legendary ancient humans, most walked the earth well before recorded time. There's a ancient library that was discovered in Russia in the 1800s, the legends about it were that it was from the last gods who lived on earth. It was discovered deep underground near a site were 300,000 year old nanotechnology was found. There were books found in the library that were enormous, some were over 100lbs. All were made of thin metal and found on shelves carved into a granite wall. The only human remains that date back to the estimated age of the library found in the area were the Denisovans, they were also upto 9ft tall and could have weighed upto a 1,000lbs.

Enlil wasn't his original name btw, unfortunately its lost in history because it's no longer mentioned anywhere. Its just mentioned that he had a different name before he was worshipped as a God among gods. Btw Gilgamesh isn't Bilgames' real name either. It's always been Bilgames, but greeks decided to start calling him by the wrong name and screwed everyone up. Now history remembers what the greeks called him, Gilgamesh, but hardly anyone has heard of Bilgames. Kinda fucked up actually. I'd be rolling over in my grave if I was Bilgames.
