its actually a doable idea if you know your VW stuff and modify stock parts. wider+longer front beam arms, taller towers and coil overs helping front beam torsion bars, cutting+extending IRS arms, well rebuilt engine and trans. don't expect to be the fastest beast happening, just build it to survive the punishment! 30 years ago friends built "BugFoot", suspension (3") and body lifted (4") to run on 32" tires, bus swing arm gearboxes grafted into IRS arms, Rhino trans, dual carbs on a 1600 dual port (nothing special or spendy).... top speed only 53 mph but off road and climbing the bastard creation was very reliable and about unstoppable. climbing it needed a full tank and 90lbs of sandbag (2 bags) in its nose, driving on sand remove them. parts were dime a dozen available back then... might raise the budget to a $3500 limit on just the parts, can still go a long way doing all the labor "free". BugFoot body lift was easy, 6" wide 1/8" steel bent in a brake welded to the pan and drilled for the body to bolt up, lots of headroom (some taken up by the cage inside), instantly raised the front fenders up for less butchering needed and raised the rear for the fiberglass fender unit to bolt onto. it made the pan more rigid too with that wrap-around "spine" added to it. Hoonigans hope you see this description of what BugFoot was, it used wheel adapters for the big truck rims+tires that REALLY helped it get over and through stuff without getting stuck, dime-a-dozen at near any junkyard too.

dinosaurs that they are, VW buggies will ALWAYS be awesome off road for what they are when modified for doing it.... and sometimes, even unmodified. 3 of us in an old stock '59 bug climbing on STEEP dirt, stopped next to a stuck Toyota 4x4 asked if they were ok (they had a long way to back down). some clutch burning but that little 1500 single port with it's pea shooter carb KEPT ON GOING UP!! yes it was a lot of LUCK, but damn! weight distribution and traction was just in the old bug's favor vs the 4wd Toyota being heavy in front light in rear. that moment really convinced me, NEVER underestimate a VW bug.

Just found this stuff. My 13 year old son and I are embarking on our first Baja build. If you cats dont do this EVERY year the HOONIGAN community will fall apart.
