I've always loved The New Addition.....especially Ralph Tresvant. Damn, that brotha was always so fine...so smooth....his vibe & his swagg....all the way from the start, back in the mid to late 80s, and beyond. When me & my siblings & friends would see them performing back in the day, on Soul Train and awards shows, we used to argue over who's "man" was who's. And I always claimed Ralph Tresvant. As I entered into my teen & high school yrs, his poster owned a spot above the bed I slept in, in a room that I shared with my sisters. I think my older sister had a poster of Bobby Brown on her side of the wall. That was her "man". It was all in dreaming fun. Our mom couldn't afford concert tickets for us, so we had to watch them on t.v., and dream about them. And out of respect, i won't mention the kinds of thoughts & dreams i had about Ralph Tresvant back then. But I'm sure you can imagine. Love New Addition.....always, for life!

I watched Ralph slide up and grab his Bobby at a concert in Hawaii and just join in singing with him as though it was planned. I thought then that he was such a special person. He did embarrass Bobby or walk off the stage, he just humbly and lovingly lent him a hand. I loved that.

Can You Stand The Rain was a great song to allow the NE fans to accept Johnny. No one can deny he has a great voice but when Ralph slides in with his verse the fans felt at home and we felt NE. Yassss Jimmy and Terry With Johnny coming into the group, it made the group have the Temptation vibe the group always wanted. This was a great interview. The questions were great and the responses stayed focus and gave enough details to satisfy the question.

I think Johnny added a mature type of evolution to the group also. Not to take anything away from their earlier hits...but they were growing in to adult young men to carry on singing kiddy "Candy Girl" and " "Mr.Telephone Man" type records would sound silly. If you truly know (and love!) the story of New Edition, you already know that Ralph was never a me-first guy. Never wanted to be the focal point at the expense of the others. Dude is so humble and if The New Edition Story is to be believed, even rejected an early offer for a solo deal on behalf of his homies ("we don't get down like that"). As Ralph confirms, the early vision of the group was the Jackson 5 vibe, and he was perfect for that. Also, little surprise that he and Ricky were out in front of a singing career before the others b/c Ricky Bell has been described as a "secret weapon" of sorts within New Edition, who was every bit capable of carrying the lead vocals role and thus, making BBD as a group even possible. Big Ups to Ralph and the whole crew! Thanks for everything.
