HEADS UP for anyone who boots into a black screen after installing guest additions!! i had this same issue too, the solution i found online that seems to work for me is to change the VGA adapter to VMSVGA. you can do this by closing out of the virtual box (shutting the machine down), and then clicking settings. you then want to click "display," and then next to "graphics controller" is a drop down menu, from which you can select VMSVGA

For me, copying the link for Firefox into the VM was of no use, since Internet Explorer wouldn’t load the page anyway. What did work was creating a folder on my Host, in which I put the installer for Firefox and then making it a shared folder to access the file in the VM

@@benis8220 Fair enough lol. Although you can still do this if you disable internet for your WinXP VM, then use a shared folder to get the installer, then turn off shared folders and do what you need with the VM

For any one struggling with file sharing or copy and pasting the Firefox link you can just as easily enable drag and drop to move the file after you have extracted it on your host system/

Update April 30, 2023: There seems to be a new bug where after you install Guest Additons you'll get a black screen. To fix this shut down your VM, open your VM settings, then click on display and set the graphics controller to a different one. Try each one and see if you can get it to work again. You also might want to try turning off 3D Acceleration. Update October 23, 2022: There has been an update to virtual box which has changed a few minor things: First you need to select this ISO image when creating a new virtual machine (In the same Windows where you name your VM) or you can add it later in the virtual machine settings > storage and adding the ISO file to the optical drive. Also make sure that "Skip Unattended Installation" is checked. Moreover, you are having trouble downloading Firefox on XP, download it on your host machine and use Shared folders to transfer the installer to your VM. @4:00 new version of this screen (I assume as it's my first time using linux or virtual box) also lets you choose Processor count. Oracle forums seem to recommend that the default value of one (1) is enough except in some circumstances (I couldn't understand what they were, so I assume they're not for me). Your firefox link didn't work in the Virtual XP, but I read a lot of comments and someone mentioned Shared Folders and used that to drag and drop the file. Worked great!

This is a super helpful video. The software has changed since this video was made. I tried using the latest release, 7, and couldn't get it to work. I took another commenters advice and used an older version, 6.1.5, and it worked. It took a little more tinkering than he showed in this video, but not too bad. I couldn't have done it without this video.

Turn off the network in XP. Go to network then click on your network and disable it. It will finish the install and you can reenable it afterwards.

Question: Do I have to install a fresh version of XP from a downloaded install ISO, or can I use an already existing install that has a lot of my software on it? If I have to install fresh, can I simply copy my registry and windows dlls and so forth from my pre-existing install that has so much software on it? I can't seem to download the virtualbox guest additions. The warnings you get never pops up, and it just stops downloading :(

I haven't found a way to download guest additions yet. But you can right click on the desktop, click properties, go to settings and change screen resolution to 1280 by 1024 pixels (1600 by 1200 pixels hides the start button and taskbar for me for some reason). This will make the screen bigger but its still not full screen. However, you can actually go to scale mode by pressing the host key + C (host key is right ctrl if your on windows). That will let you change the screen resolution as much as you want to make it basically full screen. Just go to the corner of the virtual machine and drag until its fills up the screen. But video quality might be lower than usual.

Along with that black screen bug, I couldn't for the life of me get widescreen to work in later VirtualBox versions. Stick to 6.1.32 - It also runs faster from my experience (less choppy mouse movement)

I followed your steps, but the VirtualBox additions keep getting stuck on installation. I'm 11:36 into the tutorial and can't progress. Had no pop-ups, just hit install and it gets stuck about 45 per cent into the installation.

Shutdown your VM, open the VM settings the click the network tab and disable the network adapter. Start your VM and try installing Guest Additions again. When its done you can re-enable the network adapter.

Great tutorial, but after launching, the vm was really laggy and slow, altough everything was done right. Then when the installation started, it just stopped at 7:02 screen and froze, until i turned it off after waiting for about 30 minutes. Is it possible to get it to run normally ?

The latest version of VM could arise some problems during installation like: a very slow installation (I left the process going on for severl hours without any improvement) or a black window. For the second problem you have to go into setting and change the graphic cards. For the first problem, I tried multiple things but the only one that worked for me is to downgrade oracle VM to version 6.1 and everything works fine, You will find this version in the official page

A 64bit version of XP exists, but it was a later release of the OS. During it's prime only 32bit XP was available. The majority of software available on XP only runs in 32bit. The only advantage of 64bit is the is the ability to use XP with better hardware which does do much for you in a VM.

I also didn't get it. You could instead enter settings (yellow cogwheel), go to Storage -> Storage Devices -> click the blue CD icon in the small tree -> on the furthest right under "Attributes" there's another blue CD icon in the "Optical Disk" row. Click that blue CD icon and find the .ISO you downloaded, and select that so its name is in the gray box just to the left of the icon. Then hit save and start again!

My last issue which I cannot solve is the fact that the windows xp frequently freezes for 5 or so seconds. It's happening so often even without programs open IDK what to do. I'm running it on my gaming computer so there shouldn't be an issue?

@@idkwhat365 I recently tried that with activating Windows 8, in which the computer wouldn't let me do so because it was recently retired. When I set the date to an earlier time, the system allowed me to activate it.

If anyone is having issues with it working try downloading the 6.1.50 version and not the newest one. For me it works faster and it better optimized as well

thanks, but how did you make the iso file , I extracted the downloaded file but i didn't see any iso what I saw is the setup.exe with some file , I clicked on the setup.exe it send me to a page to install Windows XP , but I couldn't install it for unknown reasons , I tried to turn the file into an iso file with iso creator but it also didn't work , anyone please help me.

The download is already an iso. There is no need to extract it.
