Nocturnal bucks don’t exist I understand that now however they do change and become nocturnal in a certain area because they’re moving because of pressure. I have many bucks that are photogenic daylight hours on food plots and other areas and that changes once the hunting season starts and they only move in there after dark. The key that I have realized is I have to move into the timber to the small staging areas where the bucks are moving and eating bc they don’t feel comfortable in the well used feeding areas during day light. Great video guys and it just confirmed my experience. Keep up the great content

Great information to digest, and chew on later..lol I've seen bucks that move and feed at night, but the same bucks move and feed during the day too. The hunting pressure makes them move in a smaller pattern I've noticed, through trailcams and scouting. They're still there and huntable, usually takes a bit more work. Comment on deer spending time in beds. Here in Pa. I have a place where I can easily observe a small hollow where deer frequently bed during heavy snow. My record is a doe who NEVER left her bed for FIVE days! Snow was approximately 18 inches deep and I could walk up to about 25 meters of her. No tracks in snow and one sunny day as I approached she calmly stood up and walked away. No injuries; no blood or hair in bed.

I watched a video that was put out on KZbin in April of 2012 by the National Deer Association. That study was about deer movement during different moon phases. They discovered that deer are “Perpuscular”, meaning they move mostly at dawn & dusk. The moon phases didn’t effect them like we mostly think. It was a pretty interesting video.

That's funny, how come there are so many deer hit on the roadways right around the full moon ? I drive a truck thu the mountains in Tennessee, North and South Carolina and always see more deer dead and alive.

@@stevecooper8121 so I guess you did your own scientific study to come to that conclusion? I just gave an example of a study put out and I also gave the time line and institute that did it. The only time that I have first hand experienced the moon effecting the deer is they move more at moon rise and moon set. An older hunter told me that and proved it to me. So, do you’re own research and come to your own conclusions.

I have never assumed that deer were nocturnal. I have seen too many moving around periodically throughout the day all during the season. They may not move far, and most people I know hunt a box stand on a green patch, which can certainly make you think they are nocturnal.

Love this! In NW Florida a lot of the Wildlife Management Areas sell the pines to lumber companies. So when the re-plant they plant pine rows, once the trees get mature there is zero sunlight hitting the ground. We refer to these as Pine Desert’s. With no undergrowth these are non hunt areas and you only get occasional transient deer. Great video and very informative - keep it up guys. You produce exceptional content.

Another good video. I think that when people say that a buck is nocturnal it doesn’t necessarily mean that the deer is truly 100% nocturnal. However, before they shed their velvet I would say that the distance traveled during daylight hours outside of the “core” bedding areas is significantly higher than mid-October in most areas of the country: certainly in Maine. So unless you’re able to set up right on top of bedding which can be incredibly risky it can be an extreme challenge to catch these bucks on their feet during daylight hours in all of the places that you would typically see them during daylight hours just a few weeks before. There’s definitely a switch in most deer after the velvet is shed and the hormones change that affects their behaviors and movement tendencies. That was one part of the video that I wish that the MSU guys kind of touched on a bit more from a hunting standpoint. Sure, they may be on their feet during daylight in tight to the bedding cover but that doesn’t mean that they’re a very “killable” buck. You’re just not going to see them as often in that “stretch of woods” between their destination food source and the security of their bedding cover like you could’ve a few weeks earlier. I think that’s where the term “nocturnal” stems from and is more of what people are saying when they are referring to nocturnal deer behavior.

So glad I found this video. I have been telling my buddies for years that the "nocturnal" thing was BS. You always hear "he went nocturnal", just because the buck only shows up on trail cam before daylight and just after sunset. I have always said there is no way a mature buck just lays in a hole and waits for dark. I always strongly believed that the bucks were moving in broad daylight all the time, they just did it in thicker cover.

My big bucks on my hunting lease go nocturnal within just a few days after archery 🏹 season starts in September. After that if you see them only if they are chasing does. Every large buck I’ve been fortunate to harvest came in minutes before dark.

Screening cover can be found when the snow is melting in March. I have 1 public spot that borders a huge cattail swamp. On the edge is a small meadow which is a couple of hundred yards long. On the opposite side of that meadow is a thin 🌳 line with grass & a swamp mix. That side gets the movement in the evening & the other side next to the swamp gets used as a return route early in the morning since it doesn't have the cover. A particular buck survived last year. He could be pretty wide & typical this year. His evening route to get to acorns in the early fall u could in March see nearly every step he took. I've totally stayed out of his sanctuary far the the west & the thickest area for an ambush is around 100 yards from the start of the oaks. In that area he goes through an area of small softwoods. W/o exposing himself he has a large blown over oak for cover as he exits the softwoods. As soon as he gets past that oak there is a corridor of thick trees to his right & willow brush to the side of the large marsh. B4 that there isnt a screen of willow brush next to the marsh. I have 1 spot setup there where he walks through a narrow area. A little closer to the oaks i have another spot for a different wind. History has told me that mid September might be the best time to be there cuz a 9 day shotgun season opens just b4 the rut last year. I'm patient but the doe cross a hiking trail which alerts hunters. My video 🌳 camera had 4 doe & 6 fawns on it last year. The many doe in the area bed closer to the acorns on a different travel route going north to south. They bed inside a swamp with tall grass & a few 🌳 for shade. This might be the best example I've found in 30 years of a buck scent checking doe in late October.

Two years ago I witness a deer eating mushrooms, it knocked a bunch over and ate the stems. I have always wonder why it did that. I noticed all around the area I hunt, that season, those particular mushrooms did not grow last year. It's one thing for them to eat winter wheat that planted in the fall, and acorns dropping in the fall, just found it odd for them to eat mushrooms. I should note that these deer are not around ag fields, these deer live in a mountain range and are truly wild. I agree on the nocturnal, it's another excuse for guys to not go out and be smarter then the deer. Awesome vid, love learning in the off season.

I backed off, years ago, using trail cams on our private land. I would get a good picture of a mature buck in daylight , then never see him again. I thought he went nocturnal. Wrong. Smart, older bucks do not like cameras, and learn to avoid that area, like a permanent tree stand. Great video

Makes sense, when you look at the northeast and the density of the forests, always found the best habitat to be around Clear cut wood lots that had been cut 3-5 years before, sit in the oak stands all you want but the deer are in the old cuts

All whitetail deer are nocturnal all year long. Bucks and does. It is a distinct natural chatacter of the species. And they are all active during daylight at some point depending on how comfortable they are all in relation to seasons, time, weather, location, hunting pressure. Just look at their eyes. The relflective properties are similiar to a walleye which are crepuscular ( twighlight ) feeders. Very active and see excellent under low light or no light. But they also can be active during the day depending on the situation. So....when hunting pressure or negative activity impacts the deer. Its a natural easy choice by them to only move in areas that they have been pressured on at night. And they are on unpressured areas during the day.
