A fella that does downwind pushes for me subscribes to the idea that deer smell him coming. I debate him and say that deer, from my experience soon turn into the wind after being bumped. I've seen this in snow cover many times. Is it better to do deer drives down wind or upwind? I say up wind as they want to smell what's ahead.

I have deer hunted like this the last several years in places that allow me enough room to do it. I can’t sit in a stand over a food plot without going crazy. I don’t spook nearly as many as when I started doing it. I hunted 5 times and killed 3 deer this way this season, one pretty nice buck for our area. Anyway, it is a lot of fun.

Another thing to consider is how easy it is to spot lateral/ sideways movement in the woods compared to when something is walking in a straight line directly to or away from you. To test this theory, sit in the woods and ask someone to walk left to right across the terrain in front of you. Then ask them to walk directly at you in a straight line, and compare the results. It is much more difficult to see a person walking straight towards you. When you are approaching on the same hillside, you are walking in a straight line towards the deer. When you are walking along a ridgeline, the deer will see your lateral movement more easily. For more information on this type of movement technique you can research a military term called the "clover leaf method." When trying to look down into a bedding area, it is best to walk in a straight line towards the area, if you don't see what you want to see after your approach, walk the same straight line path back out, then loop around out of sight, and make another straight line approach. Eventually this loop will look like a clover leaf when drawn out on a map.

@@kalebbooher8092 I have no problem with PGC deer management. They can sell 100,000 doe tags in 4A if they need to, I would not care. The key to success is getting off the beaten path, getting the wind in your face, and moving super slow and quiet. If you can camp out overnight, even better. DCNR state forest allows overnight camping without a permit for one night only and a good distance from your vehicle. Do it, you will be surprised how many deer you see. They are there, waiting for you, and super skittish and hard to approach. Just change up your way and you will find success, I guarantee it.

In the military we call it the military crest of a hill. Unless you can’t afford it always travel at least 1/3rd the way down the hill or you will be skylit. Movement at the top of a hill is far more visible, hence why he saw the deer crossing the top but they never saw him.

Indiana's sex ratio is so far off that in recent years the dnr has issued a deer bundle license. One antlered deer and 2 antlerless or 3 antlerless, whichever you prefer. And in addition you can buy extra antlerless tags and harvest by a county quota. My county has a 7 doe limit. But if you fill out all those tags you can go to the neighboring counties and harvest up to their quota as well. You can put some serious meat in the freezer for $26 per tag.

I hate to be that guy, but there is no such thing as a no man's land underneath a deer spine. A deer's lungs protrude dorsaly such that there is no way you could shoot under the spine and not hit lungs. Of course you can hit high lungs and have a hard time recovering the deer, but there is no "gap".

EXACTLY how I hunt in SW VA's hill country. Unless I am pretty positive about a spot that is getting used heavily I still hunt, play the wind and cover ground. Not always successful but you do learn a lot more about the terrain and the big picture stuff of the particular area you are hunting. This year was tough with massive oak crops (all types) minimizing buck movement. The rut was strange in where I was too. Never really saw the heavy rut activity and chasing. Finding deer was no problem. Finding bucks was a problem.

If you still hunt timber it's good to go from tree to tree and not get caught out in the open. Here in PA this type of hillside hunting is common. The only problem in my area is that the hills are often too steep to move quietly on and if you lose traction you could get seriously injured or worse.

Growing up hunting in northern new england mountains in the snow gave me the advantage of learning how the deer travel..bed..feed..it is right there in white! Moving on the line along the sides of hills often puts you right with them. If not..they are often a little higher..or a little lower than you. If they hear you they often stop to see what you are. Also the wind seems to often be up slope or down slope. Pop

Awesome video as usual. You guys should come to southeastern Ohio next weekend for our muzzleloader season. It runs January 7th through the 10th. Lots of public hunting in Guernsey Co. And surrounding counties.

Zach talking about the public land challenge bummed me out because they haven’t done one this year.. or at least I never saw a post about one

Loved the footage and the hunt breakdown at the end. I'll definitely be relistening to your podcast with Larry! Thanks for sharing!

Is this title for a different video? Lol out of all the hunts I’ve watched on this channel the title makes ZERO sense

Great hunt guy’s and the tactics are definitely working in your favor. We don’t mind if you shoot a doe, heck I would, seeing that many deer! Enjoyed tagging along and can’t wait till the next episode.
