Your review is very well done and terrific in comparison details. I have both of these lenses. I bought the 12-60 after it came out 2 years ago. Now, I rarely use the 12-35 anymore, but it is an excellent lens, especially when I want the 2.8 f stop max. It is a very sharp nano coated Lumix lens. The Leica 12-60 is a great all around lens, and it is my "go to" lens, which I keep on my G9 for all the time use. Today, as the lenses are about the same cost, I recommend a photographer chooses what they feel is most important, the extra reach and sharpness of the Leica 12-60 or the extra wide f stop of the 12-35, 2.8. Neither lens will be considered wrong in your choice. Thanks again for your very interesting and informative review. Bravo!

How would you compare the Leica 12-60mm vs the Fuji 18-55mm since you have a good deal of experience with both?
@quiver994 жыл бұрын
Michael B i own both. I can tell you that Fuji 18-55 is a stellar lens. Combined with the Fuji X-E3 makes it an unbeatable ready-for-everything combo and that would by far be better than a 12-35 f2.8 Panasonic lens coupled with any camera if you use it for weekend or short city break. Quality of images is stunning. Panasonic 12-60 is more a universal zoom and coupled with the 9-18 and a small prime (20mm or 15mm) is a better complete package for short holiday or urban photography on the go. When I want the best out of my images I carry 2 Fuji’s (mostly X-T2) and 4 lenses (18-135, 10-24, 50 f2 and 23 f2) and I’m set for everything. It’s a better package than MFT, in my view, and it can cover all your needs for as long as you travel.

Does the 12-35 ii exhibit parfocal behavior? I read on a thread in dpreview that it mimics parfocal (even in MF) but only down to 18mm. Wider than that it gives up. Has this been your experience? Or were you able to see parfocal behavior wider than 18mm?

Great video comparison! I wanted to get a good lens for my G9 this last Christmas. It came down to these two lenses. At the time, the Panasonic Leica 12-60 was about $200 less at roughly $700 (it is now back up to $897 on Amazon). It was a no-brainer for me, I got the Panasonic Leica 12-60. It has the extended zoom range but alas, does not have the constant 2.8 throughout the zoom range. I can deal with that though. Love this lens. However, getting the Panasonic 12-35 and also the 35-100 seems like an excellent choice. With those two lenses, you'll have most everything covered. Then get some cheaper fast prime lenses for low light.
@TheHybridShooter5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Personally I would much prefer Leica 12-60 and 50-200 combination in that case. 35-100 has "swirly" which I don't really like to be honest.
@raksh92 жыл бұрын
I've been using the 12-35 and 35-100 for docs and corporate work since 2013, and they have been great. The 12-35 developed an AF motor fault, so I bought another one with the intention of repairing the original and having a spare 12-35. The 35-100 v1 has microjitters during video, so I turn off the OIS and just use Panasonic body IBIS, which works very well.

is the 12-35 very much better than the kit 12-60 optically to justify the price?
@TheHybridShooter5 жыл бұрын
That always depends on how important is the image quality for you, but there definitely is a difference.
@pavelp805 жыл бұрын
Not for me. Or it depends. I have 12-35 v1 since 2013? and problem of this lens is lens flare, which is not that significant on 12-60 and obvious shorter reach. Regarding to sharpness, they are both good, but 12-35 is a bit unsharp on longer end, while 12-60 seems bit sharper in the mid range which is the same. Differences in sharpness are not significant and maybe they can vary from piece to piece. But 12-35 is much better at low light conditions making this lens more versatile in dull winter days with heavy overcast and sun low above horizon. Zoom ring is better (completely smooth) on 12-35 which makes it better for video. But 12-60 is nearly flawless lens with only "flaw" being aperture. For indoor use fixed zoom primes such as 20/f1.7 or 45/f1.8 and many others might be actually better choice than "upgrade" to 12-35. It really depends what you already have. Since 12-60 is pretty good lens for low price especially with camera and it's a bit different, but not much and it's not clearly better I don't think it's worth upgrade.

I actually went for Olympus 12-40mm for that extra 5mm and I'm happy with it. According o tests it's sharpest at wide open aperture, while on lumix 12-35 you need to step down to F/4 for the best sharpness. Shame that custom button on lens doesn't work on G80, but it should work with some newer panasonic bodies. Not having OIS in lens is not a such beag deal, because focal lengths of this lens are not so extreme, IBIS is more than enough. I don't see any difference in focus with DFD (lumix 12-60) and without it. Probably newer generation of DFD makes much bigger difference. Also it has a little bonus - it can be focused manually with electric wire and classic way. The only downside I can see compared to lumix lens is noise of focus motor, It's actually quite loud.
@TheHybridShooter5 жыл бұрын
There is still a big difference between IBIS only and Dual IS even at wide end. It is deciding point between 12-35 and 12-40 for me, together with in-camera corrections.

Nice lenses and results! Parfocal effect seems to be electronical though. @ 7:06 seems to work better on the higher contrast scene (the lens), but hunts / adjusts just a bit (almost unnoticeably) on the lower contract scene (the firs). Still, it's pretty good and for normal use it's nice. Way better than those without such fine micro adjustments for video use. Still, would i feel confident about in let's say an interview situation? Hmm. This is a good reminder to look into the older shorter manual focus parfocal zooms again. It's a bit of a mystery still, but maybe i'll start with older Olympus and Canon lenses. Mechanical focusing ring just has the better feel anyways, and is much more efficient on the battery use. Now that i'm learning to service the older lenses properly, all the better. I prefer older vintage lenses anyways, but m4/3 lenses nicely fill the other needs when i need AF for faster action perhaps (or more compact size). So many options, so many great lenses!

The 56 is phenomenal at that price! Super solid build and feel. Lens hood is very good, too (better than many of Panasonic's). It is also sharp wide open and ridiculously sharp when stopped down a bit. Both those lenses combined are still less expensive than the Nocticron, and you get two different focal lengths. Especially the 56 provides very smooth and creamy bokeh. So for me, this is a no brainer. Sure, the Nocticron is tasty, but again, at around 430 bucks you cannot go wrong with the 56. I love it. The Leica line's lens switches are too easy to accidentally move with normal handling. The Lumix line uses switches that are more recessed and the direction of action is less susceptible to unwanted activation. That is unusual then, I had no major problems with vignetting on any of the cameras that I used it with.

It looks like the 12-60 mm has a lot of ghosting. Is that true?

No, it is not.

I want to sell my 14-42 Kit now to get the 12-35 for my gx80 😂 I only have to save up some money as its pretty expensive for me 🙈

Compare a good lens and a bad lens instead. Show me how much better they are than a kit lens

I already did that.

I think that the 12-60 is very over-priced for what it is
@TheHybridShooter5 жыл бұрын
I do not, especially if you are buying it in kit.
@cmartin_ok5 жыл бұрын
@@TheHybridShooter The Leica lens is about £800 in the UK whereas the slightly slower 12-60 is under £300, so it's 2 and a half times more expensive for an extra stop at the longer length. The 12-35 f/2.8 is almost exactly the same price as the Leica 12-60 and I'd say was therefore better value. Buying in a kit reduces the effective price, but for a variable aperture lens, I still reckon that the Leica 12-60 is way too expensive. £550 or thereabouts would be better
@TheHybridShooter5 жыл бұрын
@Christopher Martin I disagree. Maximal aperture is just one of many aspects. There is much more that needs to be considered.

i bought mine from somebody that got it in a kit but was a prime shooter. Got a great deal on a basically new lens - I love it. Hardly ever leaves my G9.

Very good comparison. I recently made a video on the Leica 12-60 (which I use mostly) and this lens is not completely parfocal. It loses Focus starting around 18mm down to 12mm. If you pause my video at those focal ranges, take snap shot and zoom in you will see the sharpness is now on the letter B. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqnCpXuJprB1f6M Again, great comparison and I may follow up on same type of comparison with Panny 12-35 mk1, Oly 12-40 and 12-100 If I have time. Happy filming Cheers
