"If you can't win the game... if you can't solve the puzzle... then you're just a loser." -N
In the world of "Death Note", Kira is god- a seemingly omnipotent entity with the ability to decide who dies and how. Only the smartest might even suspect that the killings ultimately tie back to a very dedicated young adult with an otherworldly notebook and a strong sense of justice. The series follows Light Yagami as he puts his genius mind to work, dodging police suspicion and killing off criminals in order to create a perfect world. His actions raise a lot of questions about the true meaning of "justice" and how humans respond to death... But perhaps an even bigger question is "Would he still be able to pull this off in modern society?" Join Tyler at The Imaginary Axis for a journey through culture and recent history to uncover the surprising argument about why even the greatest serial killer from 14 years ago might be a minor nuisance today... and why that should scare you even more.

I feel like it would be super easy for Light to counter this actually. Firstly, he has the advantage of his method of killing being supernatural... which means it sounds like a conspiracy theory. That GREATLY limits both the number of people and the type of person who would correctly guess his methods. Secondly, he'd be able to monitor everyone's progress. And thirdly, he'd have an army of supporters who he could organize, and the ability to bombard the internet with alternate theories and misinformation campaigns.

Light strikes me as the kind of guy who wouldn't be on social media, even before becoming Kira. He was popular because he was smart, athletic, and good looking, but he was never social. He didn't seem to have any friends or any interest in dating before it was a cover for his activities. And if Google could out him so easily, how the heck do actual terrorists pull off anything? I think that people give the ever watching "Big Brother" too much credit sometimes. There's too much information going around online every second to pinpoint the suspicious activities of one person or small group unless you already have reason to single them out.

+Jay B -- TBH, Light's not all that and a bag of chips. I'm pretty sure he's a psychopath and even if he just goes power-mad in a hurry, he makes quite a few mistakes. Modern Terrorists have been using the same tactics since the 80s. It turns out that meeting face-to-face in a church basement every week is still the best way to avoid all surveillance except for infiltrators. Charismatic leaders recruit disaffected individuals through some twisting of ideology (usually political or religious) to join a "social group" that meets in the real world face-to-face. After a while in the echo chamber, those deemed fit for advancement are taken aside after a meeting to perform some "test of loyalty" (usually armed violence, and/or isolating themselves from friends or family) and then are taken to the "next layer" of the organization. They are then placed in a militia unit or as part of a cell in another city, either to recruit more people or to stage an attack. Everything done so far is _entirely legal_ as long as no physical coercion or threats are used. Once part of a cell, they move into a location chosen by the Organization and start looking for work. They go to work, they get along with their neighbors. All the while, they quietly gather equipment, train and plan their attack (potentially for years) and then execute it without breathing a word of it to anybody. They have no online presence, they never call home and as much as possible without arousing suspicion, they only socialize with "roommates" (aka. fellow cell members). From the outside they look like any other group of young men starting out in the Big City. And unlike Kira, they aren't leaving a constant trail of dead bodies covered in psychological and physical clues for a detective to puzzle over. Non-state militias like ISIS are basically just military units on campaign. They know how to hide from drones and satellites and they get funding through various outside means. Again, they have very little contact with the outside world, therefore there's nothing to track.

VPNs do little to protect your privacy or enhance your security, unless paired with other changes. VPNs cannot encrypt data outside of the connection between your device and the VPN server also there's a "no logging" policy which is completely wrong (state of Japan we're talking about; It's all going to be logged). There's not really a lot that VPNs do other than hiding traffic from your ISP (Leaks do happen to expose this very often). Light would use Firefox (for regular activity) and TOR (for other illict activities) making it harder to trace. Light was portayed as a hardworking, talented, and successful young man with a strong willpower and "justice" (although corrupted soon after with a God complex); Light is incredibly ambitious, with the cunning and creativity to carry out his goals (such as "Becoming God Of The New World", "New World Order", etc). Light is basically a genius and often adored by his peers (students, family {Although not shown visibly, it was subtle}, and even Lawliet Obrah {L} as he even considered him a potential replacement in the event of his death, despite his suspicion.) Light would also have to be modernized in this situation (As the video author made L, Mello and Near basically as their peak which is they're useless unless compared together and Mello's sacrifice is what stopped Light from outsmarting Near (He would of regardless). So Light is around the level of a Extraordinary Genius I'd say... Now, we modernized pretty much all important characters we need to create new plot and proceed the events which is pretty much impossible due to Light, L and Near all being unpredictable in some ways.

L deduced that Kira existed prior to using any police information. He announced it TO a gathering of police officials from around the world right after they were contemplating calling him in...which means he didn't need their info to figure it out, because he hadn't gotten it yet. The names and faces thing is honestly a huge gaping hole in the story since it hinges upon criminals who hadn't died yet...even though Light was far, *far* away from having cleansed the world of criminals yet. In fact, *after* that point in the story, Light even states that he's got a whole roster of criminals that he saves for experimental purposes, and he also has deaths scheduled well in advance of the current day in case he is incapacitated in some fashion. TLDR: L doesn't use police info to figure out that Kira exists and figuring out he needs a name and a face to kill is nearly impossible. He may need one or the other, but knowing he needs both is impossible via the method used in the series.

I don’t believe light ever considered L to either be real or as smart, and so I believe hindsight is the real lynchpin, not the year. Light failed because his initial entrapment in the game of wits came about because he didn’t think it could be traced back to him so quickly. Knowing how thoroughly he has to cover his own ass could have drastically changed the outcome in both situations. Tor is a good example of how one can hide on the internet today.

Which is why in the Netflix adaptation, Light is actively directing his higher-profile murders out of Japan. And when he spreads his own "God Name" of "Kira" he selected it because it's relatively neutral: it's a Japanese pronunciation/writing of the English word "Killer"...making those who would hunt him believe that he originates in Japan. And it's also that care which was a problem. See, no such overt "Google searches" were performed because Light was accessing his father's police database for 99% of the criminals. L thus justified the lack of open searches for criminals pre-Judgement with the explanation that Kira had access to police databases; if he's not using Google, he must have access to a private criminal database such as the ones that police forces regularly use. Thus L sprinkled bait case-files throughout various police databases...and Light picked one concerning Japan to throw the trail that direction. However, L set that seed in the specific database Light was using...which is how L knew that Kira was connected to that police force in America. (I believe the Seattle Police Department. Or Chicago Police Department. One of those.) And it's also part of why he uses Watari to get information on L's true name...avoiding the entire possibility of the internet realizing that the person looking for "world's greatest detective L" would be Kira by preventing the former thing in the first place.
@onijester56
@onijester56 7 жыл бұрын
Or have a private database that permits him to find victims without cluing Google and the Internet into his search history. Something like a police criminal database, which he regularly frequents and has access to because of his police chief father. (Which is how L in the Netflix adaptation tracked Kira/Light to that specific city.)

I really like how the one shot stroy that came after death note, by the same author, talked about this specific thing, in that story riyuk was bored again and wanted to give the death note to another smart person like light hoping he'll do awesome things with it, so he decided to sell it in a creative way, but once he was told about light and his adventures, he explicitly said that those tricks he used to do back in the day won't work today due to the development of technology, echoing the same sentiments of this video by the author of death note himself, but he also said that light will most definitely find a workaround.

When you think about it, Modern Internet Light could still become quite a powerhouse with the death note, as he'd know to use modern tools. The obvious is to hide suspicious searches using VPNs and relying on software that just doesn't have trackers in it; basically everything has some workable alternative. However, he'd also be able to use social media to his own benefit. With some caution, he can turn his social media accounts into his own personal alibi generator. He would do regular every-day stuff and post about it online, but set up deaths to occur at the same time; that is, assuming he wouldn't have a reason to reveal his control of the time of death to anyone. With the world breathing down his neck, why would one individual detective get beneath his skin the way that L does in the anime?
@TheAce12570
@TheAce12570 5 жыл бұрын
Honestly, he would probably just operate with a man-in-the-middle type of strategy. Basically instead of finding the information himself, he'd figure out the name of just one criminal, then write "searches the internet for criminals and copies their names, pictures and details of their crimes, then prints this information out and brings the envelope to ________ (a location where Light (or yet another m-i-t-m) could pick it up), before going home, erasing all evidence of his recent activity and hanging himself." Then he could just repeat this process with a different criminal later. Even if they tracked down the man in the middle, which would already be a gargantuan task, they'd still have no way of connecting it with Light unless he was dumb about the way he handled the exchange of information with his puppet. Which he wouldn't, it's still Light we're talking about.

Well... We are taking in consideration that "L" still a factor? If no... every time, some know criminal get killed and for some reason in his internet search have other know criminals... Them for some reason his neighborhood say that he was always going to some unknown place to send a envelope. Some other know criminal get killed or dies... The police see the same thing as the last one... They contact Google or another internet provider in the Kanto area, cause the know criminals, in this propose, are going to gave Light the names, planes and public transport are not a option. They see some strange internet access in some area and go to investigate. They go there, or just star to following him. They see him giving information to a school boy and go on a investigation to him. They question the paper with a lot of criminal names and... Well, I think it is pretty obvious what happens.

Chara Dreemurr You underestimate the power of death note, lol. This can be simply negated by “X person dies of accident, but before that they receive page and fully fill it out with the names of criminals. Of course, they research the names themselves. In case they are captured, they can be ordered to suicide or whatever. Also, they are ordered to simply write the names down, and hence, they have no idea that their action actually kills people”. Lastly, the police (or ANY logic based detective) won’t even consider the pages the main cause of death. Nobody! Be realistic. They will try to find what happens with the page afterwards (if that has not been destroyed by the puppet already). And will get stuck in a dead end. Then you can repeat the process with some other random person. You seriously underestimate the power of death note, lol. It gives the user an ability to kill people from any distance in any location and mind-control them (before their eventual demise). These powers alone are close to being top tier, lol. All your analysis is wrong because you assume that people will know how exactly people die (I.e. they will know about death note). But here is the thing - they won’t. The power of disbelief, conspiracy theories etc is astonishing. Hence, they will simply lack any reasonable evidence to, well, do an investigation. Add on the precautions of making other people to fill out the death note + make all death random/accidents/whatever etc (limiting the correlation between the method of death to 0). If anything, people would believe it is some “final destination” stuff going on. Not some oddly specific notebook killing people (seriously, you wouldn’t even consider that an option if you haven’t known about the anime). Case closed. No suspects, but a trail of bodies of both innocent and many more guilty. Also also, the police won’t act rationally or perfectly. If they did, there would be 0 unresolved cases. Still, people can get away with practically anything these days. Add to that some mythical object with leaves no evidence and little to no trace, and you will never be caught as nobody would be able to prove or suspect you directly. Maximum, they will follow your puppets, which will be clueless and know nothing. Also, even if they prove that pages kill, they will not know that you can manipulate one’s behavior or the rules of the death note. Hence, again, there is practically no chance of them catching you. GG.

This entire argument is based off the premise of Light doing the same things he did in the manga if the current version of the internet existed. But thats just it, Light would never do those same things if that was the case. You're holding two separate eras of time accountable by the same story. Wouldn't it be more realistic to imagine how Light, equipped with his same superior genius level intellect and his same Death Note we all know, would go about his reign of terror if he actually NEW about the current version of the internet? Obviously the entire story would change, because if Light lived in the current time we live in, he would already know every point you brought up and more, leading him down a completely different path that we saw in the manga.

They don't have to. They just need to track whoever is looking up all of the people turning up dead. Since the original wave of corpses was left in Japan they would most likely start there. Then, after a few days and some brainstorming, they'd notice his schedule and realize that he is a student. After that, all they need to do is wait for Light to slip up, which he would because he is a narcissistic, impulsive lunatic who has a history of slip-ups in the original series. My guess is that he would reveal his connection to the police (intentionally or not) which would bring him down.

No, let me explain why in detail. The only reason there was a light to shine on light (mhm) in the first place was because of his underlying "true" motivations for doing what he did, boredom. He was on a quest for self-realization just as much as changing the world, if not more. Even if he fell for L's first trick, if he had stopped there and not used police information, they likely would never have gotten close to Light. In a world with internet, Light would never have tried to challenge L in the way he did and your premise seems to rely on the internet replacing L, not that he is also a player. There are no surveillance in lights home, and even if we assume all his electronic cameras are always watching, he could simply use a desktop monitor without a camera and make sure his phone never faced anything revealing. A mega-genius like Light would be aware of all potential risks of his devices and would prepare for the worst case scenario. Perhaps the most dangerous moment would be when he first comes into contact with Ryuk and if his conversation with him was recorded somehow. Although, even if this was the case, the few ears that would have access to this audio wouldn't assume a magical death note was responsible for the killings. Light said he was expecting Ryuk however, so he would realistically have prepared for this scenario as well. You also forget that the deduction of L was at first based on the information Kira would have available to him. Light would be smart enough to kill criminals from all around the world since he would have access to the entire world's news feed through the internet. Using L's deduction methods would be impossible, and the only reason he found Light to at all was because light wanted "to get closer to L so he could eliminate him". You could argue that you could trace lights tv and internet history to the killings, but with sophisticated means of keeping ones privacy through VPNs and I imagine other things, he could hide this from at least the internet's eyes. Any larger and more powerful entity would have no reason to suspect him yet and so wouldn't allocate recourses to scour some random Japanese students computer. Besides, Light could simply make note of criminals names and faces through public tv's or computers at his school or other more creative solutions he would surely come up with and there would be no trace to him expect maybe at the most extreme of cases that Kira was likely one of the students at his school. Light would keep up appearances with social media or he might not even use it. If he was using it he would simply continue as he was. The kind of personality change that could be detected after he found the notebook would be barely visible on social media and if anyone tried to figure out who Kira was through means like that, the internet would go on wild witch hunts for small perceived "evidence". Also, there wouldn't be anything near consensus on whether Kira was in fact an individual or a group. It would likely be seen as more plausible that a large organization planned it or even that a real god was behind it. Only very few would have the intuition and deduction to guess the truth, and even fewer would trust that intuition enough to actually believe it fully. Even fewer would have the recourses to act on those intuitions, and if they didn't have the recourses but wanted to amass help through the internet, it's unlikely many would believe him/her and be convinced whatsoever. Also, there are many serial killers on the loose right this moment and the internet will never find them because they don't leave a trial. If there are no flag recordings or base recordings or photographs to base your geolocation-finding skills on there would be nowhere to start. Light would sit in his room after school, pretending to study, recording names outside in the open and would never be suspected of anything. There are other points I could make because frankly there are so many, but the last and perhaps most important one would be - all of Light's information would be publicly available, but so would almost everyone else's, so his ability to threaten peoples lives would be so overwhelming that only people like L, N and Mellow and secret organizations with secret members would be able to do anything about it. Even then, Kira would, as he does in the manga, threaten presidents and leaders to stop funding for investigations. He would hold the entire world hostage, and because of the internet, this time it would actually be true. Simply the threat of Kira killing anyone posting any investigative efforts online would be enough to discourage all but the most devoted. So the idea that all the internets brainpower would be pooled together is a pipe dream and it would probably end up looking more like it did in 2003.

Then the criminals would keep committing crimes because they don't know someone is punishing them, so what would he kill for? He wanted to send a message. Majority of people don't like killing, and don't like it when somebody can kill them anytime, anywhere. Especially people on the internet. Soon as they find out that Kira doesn't have the power to kill anonymous nicknames on the internet, they will raid his place. Not to mention the organized criminals, the people that want the power for themselves, and the freaking government. I think there are too many factors that disprove this. 1. Trolls and Kira followers will flood the internet with impersonators everywhere. This alone creates a huge wall between light and the internet. 2. Using Tor and other Browsers with good security will likely keep him on the down low. 3. The death note series is extremely unrealistic in one aspect, it doesnt mean much in terms of quality but it is a major factor. The death note is a supernatural device, it will be the last thing anyone would think of. First they would think drug induced heart attacks, then it would be physically induced heart attacks, then disease and after years of research and investigation it will most likely be too late. In your situation the internet would need to know what the death note is and how it functions. 4. Kira would most likely become an organization of followers and start a world wide movement. In the anime, people figured Kira was a single person. But based on the number of deaths, it would be way more likely to assume Kira is some sort of cult following rather than a super villain using an evil notebook. we

Let's talk about the problems with this, starting with my #1 problem with Death Note. The first, almost insurmountable issue is dealt with in Death Note the way zombie apocalypses deal with point B in a zombie apocalypse plan: Proving that criminals randomly dying around the world is being done magically by a person hidden somewhere. In Death Note, they just decide that it's some godlike being doing it, and L decides a person is (somehow, by magic) doing this. But where is the proof? There literally isn't any. Criminals and suspected criminals all having sudden heart attacks mean nothing. Even one who painted in his own blood about 'Kira' wouldn't mean anything (though this was done by Light AFTER L engages him). And here's why: Even if people noticed a huge uptick in prisoner deaths via heart attack around the world, and they decide that this is so unusual it can't be a coincidence, you first need to overcome the number one hurdle that the internet would jump to: Conspiracy. How do you convince the chaotic internet that some person is using magic to kill people via heart attacks, and then start narrowing down method, rules, identity and position when the so much simpler answer is 'a shadow government has decided that there are too many prisoners feeding off of resources in the world, so has started killing people for nefarious reasons'? How do you clear people who are locked off by confidential information when the internet ALREADY believes such a group wants to severely limit population? The government would at least rule out such a thing, but deciding 'it's one person' and not 'it's a group of radical people splintered through the world somehow communicating on the dark web, intentionally targeting specific people' is an INSANE logic jump that is just taken for granted to create the plot of the manga. How do you KNOW it's only criminals? You can track that criminals are dying of heart attacks without any apparent reason, but how do you know that every random heart attack out there isn't involved in that? Are you ruling out unhealthy people? It isn't every *single* prisoner, nor even every single new suspect nor just prisoners in a small area. It's scattered seemingly at random around the world. So how do you decide what the victims are? How can you create a theory that it ISN'T coincidence without a profile consisting of more than 'it's criminals, but not all criminals, people who are just arrested but also convicted people, and many are Japanese, but not all of them'. This continues on with 99% of L's conclusions, which all appear to be 'ingenius' because we know them to be correct and he gives a throwaway explanation for his conclusion which at a glance seems smart. However, if you actually consider them deeply, they're nonsensical conclusions he jumps to primarily out of gut instinct that don't make any sense at all. For instance: What if instead of following Light so we know he did it, we followed Light and knew he DIDN'T do it - instead his neighbor Sebas whose room is right next to Light's is the one who inherited the note and he simply overheard Light's television and conversations each night. Or worse, what if it's Professor M in Scotland who is a genius linguist with a passion for justice and a ruthless streak, he knows about L and that whole establishment, and so he ensures that he throws them off his path by leaving a trail of breadcrumbs that will implicate a Japanese student who knows nothing about him. Nothing that Light uses to suspect L is actually proof that couldn't be done by Professor M from a distance until MUCH later in the anime - and arguably, even by the time N gets there, it could be a story of a kid who's being driven to the edge by a frivolous investigation that literally involves him being tortured and held captive on circumstantial evidence for months, while a puppetmaster works in the background unfettered. This is because L is not a good detective, he's an awful one that happened to stumble into being correct this time, and N is no better. Anyway though, on the subject, the internet would have just as much problem as L would. How can you determine the limitations of magic you can't confirm actually exists? How do you determine the identity of a person you don't know exists, or that it's a singular person instead of multiple people, and how do you determine that he has something *on* him, and that he can't just use an internal power to kill them? (Using a sacrificial lamb, which isn't a good test anyway, wouldn't be available to them) Worse, Light could and would get deeply involved in any 4chan investigation on Kira, which would get him invited into those private servers to deal with it - he'd be one of the top figures, putting forth fake information and using 4chan to dig up the identities of people who get too close to kill them. This assumes 4chan wouldn't flip the opposite way and side with Kira, digging up all the information on the people *investigating* the Kira case and doxxing people. With the real threat of being doxxed by the internet army and then instantly killed by Kira, it would deter even more people from investigating, and make it almost impossible to be able to do any real investigation. And worst of all, even if someone suspected Light as being a mole and someone approached him, having a notebook full of the names of the people who died would actually be *expected* for someone who is at the front lines of trying to figure out Kira's identities. He's meticulous, sure, and the rules would be strange, but there's simply no way anyone would conclude 'if he writes someone's name in this book, they die' instead of 'when someone dies in the Kira case, he writes their name and method of death'. So the whole concept of Light struggling with the new world is predicated on some insane leaps of logic to begin with. However, if we allow for this to just be assumed because Death Note is not reality but a manga set in 2017 and the plot MUST include Light vs The Internet, you're still underestimating Light. Because Light will also be a product of 2017. He's a private person who is raised by a cop. That means in all likelihood, he's already used a VPN, and if he didn't before, will switch to one. He'll use privacy apps and anti-cookie/tracking apps, to prevent his online footprint from being tracked. As for his Facebook likes and his social media profile...that would return a negative. Light *doesn't* have the profile of a serial killer. Even L admits after all his mindgames that aside from some moments of menace and his intelligence, that getting to know Light just makes him seem *less* likely to be Kira. He just continues anyway, because he's so focused on Light being Kira that he comes off as somewhat deranged. One thing they MIGHT be able to do is potentially find evidence of previous uses of the Death Note, but since there's no mention of previous killers being caught, this will actually throw the internet even further off course, making it seem like there might actually be some kind of a divine being orchestrating things, or that there is a family or long-lasting organization which performs cullings of some sort. Certainly not a 17 year old student in Japan who suddenly started killing people one day because he found a magical notebook with a death god attached to it.

@@IamGrimalkin Sure, but lampshade hanging doesn't make it not an issue. L *claims* he's only putting a small percentage of probability toward Light being Kira, but he pursues Light with singular determination as if he's convinced. I know that he allegedly has a method wherein 'any possibility, even a 1% one, must be pursued as a 100% one', but this is nonsense. For one, he doesn't behave in this way - he's not pursuing anyone the way he's pursuing Light, and his methods get increasingly desperate and unreasonable, while we see him do nothing more than a cursory examination of other people. That could mean that L has no one else he suspects at all, but that *still* makes it worse, because he's already said that even one percent suspicion requires 100% effort. To assume he has zero reason to suspect literally anyone else in the world means that not only did he not consider any of the options I put above, he also ignored completely reasonable options like 'another cop on the force is framing the captain's son' and 'someone associated with his own organization who knows how he thinks is doing it'. This means he can't get away from his original suspicion even when it wasn't a conclusion and when Light does things to suggest it's not even physically possible to be Kira (and lacks method + motivation that would make him stand out + unique opportunity). He doesn't seem to even consider 'the police force around me are conspiring to hide a murder train from me and allowing me to suspect someone I can't prove to be guilty'. Plus, of course, you don't prove innocence because that's almost impossible. You prove guilt, and the lack of proof of guilt is treated as proof of innocence. That system is in place to avoid this very situation, where the law wastes all its time harassing someone who they can't prove guilt for and allows the actually guilty party free rein. So, even more tl;dr, L's methods are more than 'imperfect', they're broken to the point of being actively harmful to any investigation he gets involved with. I don't consider it to be an exception with Light, because if he'd had more subtle investigation that spread out to multiple people at once, instead of directly pursuing Light as Kira, Light would have needed to up his game less and have been more prone to repeating mistakes that he instead ended up correcting. Which directly led to not only his own death and the deaths of many others around him, but the years that Kira reigned unchallenged after his death.

The only caveat being that you have to verify your own name/face data accurately, and have it freely available for anyone else on the website before being allowed to access the website yourself. Not sure how feasible enforcing such a caveat would be, but the information this video provides gives me hope it'd actually be more reasonable to implement than I'm currently assuming.

Light as a hacker would be a joke to some of the groups operating on here, and more importantly, a challenge. The less skilled world would make way for the professionals who would then share the information secretly/publicly anyway. He could try re-routing the information used according to what his computer is logged to find, but they'd just use that obvious tactic against him with decoys plus he'd have to be CONSTANTLY online literally spending 99% of his time on the computer just to circumvent attacks against a collective, uncollective of thousands of sinister and well-meaning members of society, each launching independent attacks in an ongoing race to find him first. Some with access to the time that he needs just by nature of their lives. Light is very human. One obvious attack against him could very well mask one he'd never seen and having one person in the limelight with so much active time online, so much security and all the above-mentioned clues... Not only that but it took him a week to set up basic defense mechanisms should his own family find the book. He was also incredibly immature. Watching the show for the second time I paid close attention to this theory that L proposes within a day of working with the Japanese police force, and the truth is there - Light repeatedly made childish displays of power and critical mistakes. Many might say that he left breadcrumbs for his pursuers because he was confident, but in reality, not all of his mistakes came from condescension or even confidence - many of the mistakes he made, the mistakes that played bigger roles in his entrapment than others, came about from ignorance, impulsiveness and carelessness. A good example of this is his impulsive murder of the fake L in episode 3, which led to conclusive proof that not only was Kira a person, but one living withing Kantai prefecture, Japan. A much wiser and more paranoid Light from even a week later would have carefully tried to predict the trap but not the Light of that time, but that's the point - Light was only learning from his mistakes during the most crucial point in his profiling. It's not that he constantly left behind clues because he knew that they couldn't be put together, in fact only in very rare cases did he actually provide information with a completely controlled mindset (like when he had inmates write a series of dying messages), in all other cases he was either unaware that he was making mistakes, or he made them in haste while trying to cover up other mistakes (such as when he reacted to the police profiling him as a student so he changed his schedule; the damage is already done and all he's doing is panicking). If he hadn't been killing with a magical force in the first place, he would have been caught a lot sooner, since the only thing that truly slowed down the investigation was the inability to even comprehend the killing method. L's profilings of Kira and Light Yagami were swift and meticulous. Of course a magical killing method would still stump the internet community, but I fully agree with the video director here, that regardless of that speedbump, his identitiy would be revealed nonetheless and even more efficiently by the internet community than by L.

"magical killing" would still stump the internet community, sure but not for long. people would just lage on to the first and best theory. and work with that. "we found the student!, the weapon is controlled by a book!?" and just like that the internet found him, i could se that going down in les than 3 days. it really comes down to the number of mystick killings. but he would have some run time, as he could kill a good deal of people before the internet took interest. but once it did.... well game over.

Most people would loosen their standards once it becomes clearly impossible for any kind of group to realistically do this. "Some kind of supernatural bullshit is going on" is not impossible to assume when you have thousands of criminals all over the world getting inexplicable heart attacks. It doesn't fit any pattern a disease would have, as no epidemic would exclusively target criminals and have no spread pattern. Not to mention, Light himself would very much be interested in disproving any kind of "disease, pathogen, etc" theories because he wants them to know a being is doing this.

After having thought about a modern-day Death Note scenario for literal years, I've recently come up with a strategy that Light would be able to use in order to operate as Kira while remaining nearly untraceable. Now, admittedly, this strategy would have to assume a few things. In the original story, Light initially didn't perceive there being any threat to his reign, so he carelessly wrote names in the death note that were all available through local resources and during his free time, two factors which allowed L to very easily narrow down the suspect list to Japanese high schoolers. So, this strategy assumes that after Light discovers that the power of the Death Note is real, he immediately takes to planning and preparation instead of carelessly killing, and that he is aware of the threat that other internet users and massive tech companies pose to him, which, if Death Note were in the modern day, Light would likely be aware of their power to at least some extent. Now, on to the strategy. Following the initial testing phase, Light would need to take a break to ensure that his initial kill, which was locally broadcast in Japan, seems like a coincidence and can't be linked back to him. In the meantime, he needs to covertly stockpile names and faces from a large variety of sources. Luckily, Light has a lot of options available to him. Being the police chief's son and being already on the path to becoming a police officer, having already helped solve some cases, his search history is likely already filled with crime and criminal related subjects, so it likely wouldn't raise any red flags for him to actively search online for criminal names and faces. We could also assume that Light's hacking skills have kept up with the times and he can still access his father's computer, and by extension police databases, without leaving a trace. Meanwhile, other avenues he has available to him are all the news broadcasts that Light can see while he just walks home in the first episode, newspapers which could be harder to track, or he could also make use of his popularity and start dating someone who's into the true crime genre, making it so that he could be searching for criminals using his partner's search history instead of his own and it wouldn't look out of the ordinary. Of course, you may be asking yourself how he would go about stockpiling names and faces? Easy, through a digital camera, making sure that the camera doesn't have any wireless connectivity capabilities. He could easily take pictures of the names and faces of criminals. To be extra cautious, he could also make sure that his purchasing of a digital camera is difficult to trace by purchasing a used camera from a pawn shop or something instead of from a larger store or from amazon. Similarly, he should also buy a second-hand laptop or computer from a similar source to make sure the purchase can't be traced. Light has shown himself to be pretty crafty in the original story, so it wouldn't be a stretch to assume that Light would probably be good with computers, not only in terms of software, but in hardware as well, and he could open up the computer he buys and remove any wireless adapters found within to ensure that the computer remains offline. From there, he can safely take the SD card out of his digital camera and open up the files on his computer at any time, while also giving him the ability to encrypt said files in case anybody gets to snooping around his stuff. Once Light has stockpiled a good surplus of names and faces, he should set a specific date and time at which a large amount of criminals worldwide will all die at the same time, especially any good high profile cases he finds, before beginning to kill criminals at a more hourly rate. This initial killing event would serve to immediately get the entire world's attention, which is incredibly important. Two main movements would start to occur online. The first is that internet sleuths would begin investigating the cause of the deaths, and will quickly deduce that Kira needs a name and a face to kill. Once they discover this, given the pace at which information spreads and the prevalence of the newfound Kira case in news and social media, this would quickly become common knowledge. Once that's the case, the second important movement occurs, which is that Kira followers begin to set up websites and social media accounts spreading around the names and faces of criminals everywhere that they possibly can. Given, once again, that the Kira killings are going to be the thing that everyone is talking about, there would be A LOT of online searches for criminals and Kira-related subjects, which would allow Light to more blatantly search for criminal information online, easily slipping in with the large stream of people searching these kinds of things. These Kira followers would be able to provide Light with countless criminals from around the world and from a large variety of sources. As long as Light diversifies where he gets his information from, getting stuff from multiple different websites and social media accounts and not relying on any single one, that is, leaving some criminals from each website alive to make sure that people can't tell Kira is getting his victims from any one website, then he should be untraceable. At this point, Light has established a secure information network without raising any red flags to tech companies, while also ensuring that the police and internet sleuths don't have any good information to work off of other than that Kira needs names and faces. As far as I can think of, this strategy is tightly knit together and allows for safe use of the Death Note with next to no chance of getting caught. If anyone can think of any holes, flaws, or oversights in this plan, I'd love to hear them and be faced with the challenge of addressing them with further planning and preparation.

Plus, in order to further avoid the eyes of ISPs, Light could also make use of a vpn. If he wanted to be extra careful, he could search up the name of a specific show or movie that isn't available in his country on a streaming service before getting the vpn, giving him plausible deniability as having gotten it for the purpose of watching content and using school wi-fi safely. Unfortunately for Light, there are at least a few problems for him. Firstly, Light likely only speaks English and Japanese. This is problematic because people are going to post criminals whose identities were only broadcast in their region on these forums, thus if Kira kills any person whose name was only brodcast in Japan and posted on a Japanese forum, it can be deduced that Light is at least passably fluent in Japanese. Since many of these local internet forums are inevitably going to be in English anyway, this is mostly ok, however Light has to be careful to either not use any Japanese forums or use a machine translator to kill using forums from around the world. The issue with that, though, is that the names of these criminals might be misspelled by the translator (although this can be circumvented by directly transcribing any symbols) Another issue Light may have is that, especially if he isn't using a vpn, if some equivalent of L suspects that Kira might be japanese, it would be possible to confirm this theory by subtly blocking certain forums from the Japanese web and then deliberately leaking the names of anonymous criminals like Lind L Taylor onto those forums, then seeing if any of them die. I guess the last concern is that if Light screams stuff like "I WILL BE THE GOD OF THIS NEW WORLD, JUST YOU WAIT L" in his room at the top of his lungs, his mom and sister might get a little suspicious

I respect the effort you put in this, nice read. The only strat Kira would need is to just look up names and kill people. Thats it. Like it actually is that simple. There is no feasible, realistic way for anyone to actually determine what or who Kira is, or to even consider that these deaths are the work of a random dude. Let alone actually find him. Light got caught because L existed. People that think like L just do not exist in real life.

Light as a 17 year old in 2017 would've spent his whole life with the internet existing, whereas 2003 Light had more emphasis on TV, phones, old internet etc. due to it being a much newer thing by the time he got the death note. 2017 Light wouldn't even remotely act the same way, would never attempt to draw attention to his age, nationality, profession etc. knowing he would get caught immediately. (I'm assuming he has the same goals, personality etc. as 2003 Light) He would probably use many ways to use the vast amounts of information he could get on other people to frame as Kira, would definitely use a dual public/private internet life, probably going as far as having a public persona on a windows machine while using the deep web and VPNs on a custom linux laptop to do searches he doesn't want L knowing about. 2003 Light is said to be proficient at computer hacking, so 2017 Light would be far, far better. Imagine him actively using modern Wi-fi hacking techniques to trick L into following false leads over and over, or pretending to help with the investigation online with these skills (as he does in person in the original).

I'm going on the assumption that his core philosophy while operating as Kira is "criminals are evil and deserve to die" and therefore this dictates how he uses the death note. I would assume 2017 Light is extremely knowledgeable about google etc. handing out people's personal information and would therefore be very paranoid and aware about what he says to what person online, especially over public forums. In the end he would end up like the ultimate SJW, with the mentality of "anyone who doesn't think like me deserves to die" but I don't think would he be like that in the beginning.

I can agree with the idea that Light might act differently in modern day, but the problem is that I am not Light. I cannot accurately predict what different choices he would make in today's times. In fact, I'm afraid that if I _did_ do that and this video played out as "Light would probably try to do A,B,C, but that wouldn't work because of X,Y,Z", people would probably just accuse me of underestimating Light and making poor choices in his name, all while claiming that he would just be smarter than me and use a method I had not thought of. Basically, people were going to say "Light would find a way around it" no matter what, so I had to go with just following the original events and taking few liberties with the character.
@TheImaginaryAxis
@TheImaginaryAxis 7 жыл бұрын
No, none of the responses have really changed my mind or even brought up anything I was not aware of before making this video. They usually boil down to things like "He would use a VPN or Tor", "He would not use social media/his social media would be indistinguishable from a normal person's", "4Chan requires video or photo evidence", "The internet would support him", or "Light's just so smart, he would come up with a way around everything". None of these arguments really work. Using a VPN or Tor could help you escape Google's watchful eye, but it also looks incredibly sketchy for the Police Chief's son to start booting up a VPN around the exact same time the Kira case begins. Not using social media is incredibly unlikely when you consider that social media covers more than Facebook and Twitter. Our comments right now are a form of social media. So are purchases on Amazon, views on Netflix, any online communities your school might have- practically everybody in the civilized world uses a form of social media that is tracking you and storing your information. The idea that said social media would be indistinguishable or Light would be capable of somehow hiding his change in behavior over social media is even more absurd. Social media does not only analyze you based off of simple things like whether you Liked the Democratic Party's official Facebook page. They can draw correlations about your personality based on Liking pages that seem completely irrelevant like Curly Fries (that's not a hypothetical- that was actually a page used in the study this video referenced), subtle changes in your speech pattern online, subconscious things like the colors of the ads that you're responsive to, physiological changes that Light has no control over (within the first five days of using the Death Note, he lost 10 lbs from the sheer added stress), etc. It is literally impossible for Light to hide all of those things because it is extremely unlikely that he understands the correlation between all of them, some are subconscious things he has no control over, and some are physiological changes that he can't do anything about! On the subject of 4Chan, I see absolutely no reason that they or any of the other online mystery hunters would not be able to track down the same information L did even faster. Mathematics and repeated studies just show that the number of people working on that case would likely lead to L's conclusion in a fraction of the time. He's very smart and very dedicated, but he just can't match thousands of people looking for a lead at once and coordinating their efforts. As for the internet supporting Kira... Sure. Some of them would doubtlessly cheer him on or try to help him out, but the internet is incredibly diverse in opinion. You'd be hard-pressed to find anything 80% of the internet agrees on. To suggest that 100% would agree with Kira is outrageous. And there are just so many people online that as long as the numbers are _decently_ split, there will definitely be investigations going on against him coordinated by thousands of people. Now, there is a scenario here in which you could argue some sort of cyber war would break out between Kira supporters and Kira detractors, but the internet also has efficient and widespread methods of segmenting its own communities from the open web, as discussed in this video. Kira supporters could not reasonably interfere with every single Kira investigation as there would be too many of them to hunt down, and some would be in private areas supporters cannot access. And of course, the last problem... Well... I think I covered that pretty thoroughly above. The truth is that I anticipated some level of discussion about these subjects in the comment section, but there just wasn't anything I could do about it. Sure, I _could_ have gone into detail about the deep web in the video and why that would be risky. I _could have_ brought up the subject of Kira supporters clashing with Kira detractors. I _could have_ spent more time emphasizing that I was not suggesting Light would post a photo or video of him using the Death Note but instead that the internet collaborates and uncovers details very efficiently. Heck, I even originally had segments in this video that were meant to discuss how the government can listen in on your phones and track exactly where they've been even when powered off or how most modern televisions can be hacked to listen in on private conversations 24/7, but I didn't include any of that. Why? Because the video was already bordering on 18 minutes, and I considered it more important to make the episode entertaining than to make an iron-clad argument about catching Light. If I were to really list off every single reason that Light is unsafe in the modern world and explain every counter he could possibly make along with the explanation for its ineffective nature, this video would be a 45 minute long nightmare... and people would still insist things along the lines of "Light is a genius. He'll think of a way around it that you didn't mention."

It would be harder to find without the Death Note anime ever existing. Most of this is based on the assumption people won't truly believe there is some sort of evil god or deity killing people and just quickly assume 'oh, it's probably some kid with a killer notebook, let's go find him'. Although if Kira did kill Lindner on a broadcast for only that part of Japan, it might have given the internet a vital clue. Also if Light only killed people at completely random days and times, and in all sorts of different ways, instead of everyone dying by random heart attack all at once, there would have been less attention draw to himself. His biggest problem is he WANTED to be recognized as some sort of deity of force or justice. I would assume as humans, most of us would want some sort of recognition of something like that, similar to how the Joker wants to be absolutely sure Batman knows he did something and not some other criminal, but the real smart way to pull of being Kira is by not being Kira at all and do everything as lowkey as humanly possible.

you miss the point, Light also reduced crime through fear of death, he could not write down enough names fast enough to kill all criminals individually, but he can still reduce it by a huge amount by killing like 1/10th of them and let fear of death do the rest of the work but for that he'd need to show the world that someone is doing this: KIRA however he'd still be able to just stay low and not make it obvious that he has ties to the police for example and he'd and not killing the FBI agents and screaming: I WAS ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO THE FBI WERE INVESTIGATING and just stay low and shut up and maybe move to a place (after he's finished studying) quite far from his family to give himself more time to kill and make it less obvious.

He could always give up ownership and have Ryuk take the note back to the Shinigami realm. What happened in the original was that light wasn't concerned about the fact that they suspected him or he was being noticed, he knew that they had nothing on him to suggest how he killed this way. Yeah that's a fatal flaw, almost no one would suggest Light has a magical note book. This case would look like a conspiracy theory. I don't even think authorities would even look into this. They would examine the bodies of the heart attack victims and just said they had an unexplainable death. People would probably more quickly assume some governments organization was killing people instead of one guy with a note book.

everyones talking about the absurdity of Light and what he would do no ones talking about the fact that L is far more unlikely to exist as a person than Light is. A detective that comes from a genius orphanage funded by a multi millionaire (possibly billionaire) that solves crimes the highest intelligence agencies in the world can't solve from his bedroom? Yeah not buying it. If light were to exist today he'd adjust to our modern technology and work in a way that can't be traced and he wouldn't have some mega genius like L tracking him down. Edit: you guys are forgetting that people like terrorists avoid the cia and military how? By NOT using technology, going off the grid. I'd bet Light wouldn't go near a computer for death note related purposes and while everyone is trying to track online searches of criminals he'd go old school, if a terrorist can go undetected so can Light Yagami lol

The internet also really opens up his options of people to kill which would make his targets way less predictable. He would be a lot less likely to target people that would help indicate where he lives. It would also be less obvious that he needs faces because who he could kill would include almost everyone with the internet. The real problem as you mentioned would be the search history

People seem to forget that Light didn’t take precautions when he started out, because he didn’t believe the Death Note would work. It was just a joke to him. He’s not omnipotent. No...God no...they would be able to determine he's in Japan. That's it. The first killing gives no information that he's a high school student, because that info was derived from the TIME OF DAY that ALL of his killings were taking place. One death could not determine that on its own. And they could not determine his town because that crime was broadcast on LIVE NATIONAL TELEVISION

If I was Kira - I'd buy VPS with bitcoins using Tor and set OpenVPN (or something similar) there. Then I would go online to look for criminals and check news on Kira using VPN via Tor only. Of course it won't work if I use Windows 10 or macOS - so I would buy another computer and install Linux there. Also I would use pgp to encrypt my emails or, if I needed a messenger, I would use Wire, Signal or Threema (and I would make them work trough VPN via Tor as well).

A nice theory, but this entire thesis is underpinned by the fact that "Kira" uses the internet a) already, or b) will continue to use it. Millions of people quit social media all the time - but then, he doesn't even have to 'quit' the internet, just continue using it as he has done normally - and be restrained in using it to look for information to further his cause which will itself be giving information about his profile. Information is the key here - all of these 'puzzles' are solved by information being leaked through some sort of media i.e. pictures, video, sounds, etc. So... lets take Light, as Kira, and put him in 2017 - with all his deductive powers. I'm fairly sure he would have already considered the 'power of the internet' and ensured he didn't do anything to start leaking his information. Shia Le Bouf for example, was constantly streaming online - i.e. giving people the information, they just had to decipher it. Remember, this information has to be digitised to be shared. So... i just wrote a name in my notebook, with pencil, in my room, with no webcams, etc. What name did i write? C'mon "4chan" figure it out - they can't. Why? Because at this stage, (apart from they don't care) there is no other information about the scenario. Unless he googled "Who are the current top 100 criminals today" - which, I would argue he wouldn't be dumb enough to do in 2017. Instead, he can read physical newspapers - a normal daily routine for millions still; or just watch the news, which again is a normal routine for millions. If he keeps his other actions analogue, then he won't be leaking any digital information, through which he can be tracked. Also bear in mind, that as this "Phenomenon" is happening, people will be coming up with all kinds of weird conspiracy theories about how it is happening - with "Someone with a magical notebook" ranking pretty low on the scale of probability, as people start crying "Russians & poisons" or some such actually plausible theories. Yet, information will be rampant, and as this captures attention, you could well argue it would be easier to hide in plain sight. Tell me that you wouldn't be reading more into his, if this were happening: "Newsflash ... many of the worlds top criminals are dieing from unexplained heart attacks" "The internet: Hey, this is weird, lets start a poll to see if we can guess who is next" ... queue all the forums buzzing with information about criminals. Also queue the bookmakers taking bets. Also queue those who would side with "Kira's" philosophy of justice, and simply start creating forums of people they want dead (c.f. Brooker's excellent Black Mirror with the robot bees). And so on... Just because some things have been solved by nerds in 4chan - doesn't mean all things have been solved. It took years to bring down Silk Road's 'Dread Pirate Roberts' for example. There are smart ways of using the internet, and there are dumb ways of putting yourself out in the spotlight. A calculated user, would think long and hard before sharing any information - including thinking how to use, or change their use of the internet. As for "Shia le beouf" watching the forums to anticipate leads, remember Light joined the squad that was tracking 'Kira', i.e. infiltrated from within, not simply observed from external. Just join 4Chan, and be one of the 'detectives'. TL;DR - Just behave normally, and don't use the internet for any "Death note research" until that itself becomes the norm.

Hell I'm pretty sure most of the people who trolled Shia Lebauf could give two shits about politics. No. The popularization of the internet would only help in making Light even more untraceable. The only way he died was when he had messed up and couldn't kill Near, accidentally revealing his identity to him. He would have never had to meet up with Near when they coauld have simply talked over internet. On top of that, he could also use the internet to go worldwide, ad never have to worry about people tracing him. I personally believe that if Death Note had actually taken place in the current day instead of 2003-10, he not only would have succeeded, but done it flawlessly, creating his own world through the power of the internet.

In the modern day world, anyone could use the death note with no trouble at all. First of all, with internet, he could kill people everywhere in the world so nobody and I say nobody could know he is in Japan which makes it 100000x times harder. Moreover, in real life, people would never ever think that any surnatural events could explain the deaths. The argument with 4chan users is even dumber, he says they can solve everything but he literally shows problems that are solved with the use of pictures and angles and images, they never even found guys like the Anonymous which we saw with our eyes many times. So how the heck would they find someone that could be one guy out of 8 billion people without any pictures of him ? The only way for them to get a picture of him would be if he is seen though a camera writing with a death note and even there, I hardly believe anyone would suspect a guy writing in any notebook to be so suspicious that they would recover the recordings of the camera. Also, all I said is knowledge that even a average guy could understand, so let's not even think about Light Yagami cause he would never get caught by cameras knowing he has 200 IQ lmao

I don't really think about the "flawless" part. Mostly because Light's logic is flawed from the beginning, or he never really wanted the crimes to stop so he could continue his ego trip. e.g. if there's a machine making faulty product, you wouldn't blame the product for being faulty. You'd most likely - I hope at least - go and fix the machine, so that the product would end up right. he would achieve nothing, but continue his ego trip. he would still die pretty young (there's a rule after the one saying that shinigami can us the remaining years of someone's life for their existence, literally saying (at least in the English and German translation) that when using the death note you shorten your lifespan). Ryuk would still get bored and off him himself. (also I find the comment saying that 4Chan would mug Light and play the deadliest game of hot potato with the Death Note, to just be really funny)

Like even if the internet knew it's a student doing all of this, what could they do, people would have no idea that there's a notebook and a shinigami involved in this.
