it's so refreshing to see an environment like this that's so lush and beautiful and cool that is in stark contrast to my high desert zone 8b triple digit heat, drought, high wind sandstormy brown and beige landscape. I'm actually amazed at what I can grow here, but it's definitley challenging!

Looks wonderful! For deer I have been hanging old CDs and DVDs on the garden hoops (that I normally use in with fabric for frost) It has worked great. Easy to move. They haven't touched a hosta or a lily this year. The shine scares them. I also hang them in the trees.

Agree totally about the grasses. When I had to cut back all the tall grasses and haul them away, I soon realized that extra work was not for me and I removed them.

I have several shrubs and perennials (meticulously spaced at planting four years ago) I need to move this fall. They clearly didn’t read their plant tags for how big they’d get and aren’t playing well with their neighbors. 🤣

Just my opinion, but I think folks are rude to pile their stuff next to your property. I Love your attitude about the changes going on next door, (I'd be going nuts) is it going to be a business B&B or something that such a parking area is needed ... right next to your property? And of course the port-a-potty ... really? Sigh. The plantings look great and in a few years will do the screening needed. Keep on planting.😀

Agree with you about ninebark. But have found that in a mixed shrub border (mine also has dwarf Alberta spruces), the nine barks give much-needed color through the summer season and into the fall. Your winterberries can’t be getting too much water. They grow in standing swamp water. I am in upstate (Sherrill) NY- same zone as you.

I wish I had known about sizing my shrubs for garden areas which contain many perennials but back when I added birds nest spruce bushes there was a limited market in my area and seemingly very little choice size-wise. Well wouldn’t you think that a birds nest spruce bush would not be something huge? Au contraire! I ended up having to rip them out which hurt like a tooth extraction but I couldn’t believe the root system. It of course changed the whole complexion of my front garden and I have to tell you about a much smaller evergreen bush I placed in the front with more favorite perennials that is delight for me and my gardening buddies. It is called a Pusch bush and came from Oregon. I wish I could have afforded 3 of them but I think it was$120 at least ten years ago with of course markup by the retailer. Saw it in one of my gardening magazines and decided to bite the bullet. It is not a fast grower but still fits the space and the real thrill comes in spring when the pink miniature pine cones put on a show which of course compliments the early bloomers and bulbs. I am in the mountains of NC and we like to buy at least 6b or zone 5 now since our winds in winter have really picked up. It was pleasure watching today July 14 around 2pm. Catherine 31:09

You mentioned the Aphrodite sweetshrub only hardy to zone 5. I purchased a sweetshrub from Proven Winners called Simply Scentsational. It is hardy to zone 4. It grows 6 feet tall by 5 feet wide. You may want to check it out.

I saw a Glow Girl spirea at a nursery earlier in the summer. It went on my wish list. And the Ginger Wine Ninebark. I am retiring from my day job at the end of this year, and I can see myself clearing several feet of turf outside of our privacy fence facing the street for a mixed border.

My deer nibble the new growth on my fothergilla, aronia, diervilla, and winterberry in March/April (zone 7a). They particularly like the flower buds. Once they fully leaf out, they totally leave alone. I now spray them Feb-April and they all flower!

My Swiss Stone Fine, which is huge and gorgeous (my fav too) goes through that needle drop once a year too. Doesn’t affect anything except it’s messy.

Your process on this border has been so helpful as I'm working on a similar situation in my Cape Cod zone 7 garden. About the stone pine: I planted the "Blue Angel" version of Japanese white pine this past spring, and went through a long period of stress-related needle drop. Took a while to recover, but lots of careful watering brought it through.

Your plant selection for the privacy screen looks wonderful. Interesting comment on the Orange Diervilla; I know it was on your original plan and I thought "I want to love that shrub but every time I see it it looks terrible". I didn't make any comments about it but it sounds like you had the same thought when you went to the nursery! The red one looks great! I know you don't have the Norway Spruce and Fothergilla planted close to each other but I do at my house and I love the color combination and texture. Something you might want to consider for that portal potty is a metal privacy screen. I've been researching them on Etsy, you can get them in many sizes and many patterns. A 3x4 rusted flower design would be beautiful hung a few feet off the ground and could be put anywhere your yard when the porta potty is gone. Nice yard art. Just don't get one with too much opening in the design.....defeats the purpose. Yes, more expensive than plants but no maintenance, looks pretty, easy to move.

You might try Natura tablets to deter the deer. You put them in the soil touching the roots. It is systemic, takes about 6 weeks to start working, lasts about 2 years per application. The deer herds that go through my yard and even sleep in the yard have not touched the roses I planted this spring.

Love how you are trying to stay true to no low maintenance. Grasses do seem that way, but even trimming once a year and in my case having to divide at least every two years....they are a bit more work. Love your new area and have learned about many interesting shrubs from this planting, will be fun to watch it progress~ It will also interesting to hear your reasons about evergreen shrubs...made me google my new Pieris...Couldn't afford the bigger one, but now I find out what a slow grower it is. Just like you said, the bigger shrubs are very expensive and slow growers.

My Mrs Poppins died first season I planted it, Mr Poppins is doing fine 3 years later. Growing very slowly but still alive. I haven't replaced Mrs Poppins yet

Great video! I have a dry shade area between 2 Norway Maples in zone 5b that is a blank slate. A landscaper suggested a Pagoda Dogwood, 5 Green Mountain Boxwoods and an Aphrodite Sweet bush. Also adding a privacy screen of Parkland Birch to a narrow part sun fence border. All are going in this week. Bunnies, hopefully no deer. So many questions based on this video. And, I’ve learned so much here. The first thing I put down myself were Macrorrhizum bevans. Thank you Erin!

Great choices, looks really nice. Obviously you're totally busy and don't have to do this, but IF you could, and IF you have a drone (which I think you all do?), and you wanted to do this, could you show your property/gardens from an aerial view, because I get a little confused where the boundaries and planting areas are... like I see what looks like a road behind this planting area that I would assume is the boundary line between your property and your neighbors', yet there is a planting area directly behind where you planted that you mentioned is your neighbors', so I'm just kind of confused, lol. Here we have saying....from anything bad, something good come. This privacy screen already looking good, of course it will take few years of watching into neighbours property until trees and shrubs pick up and put some bulk and growth, but it will look way better then what was there. Well worth "sacrifice".

She goes in and cleans them out every year or season or whatever, she said they all do it. She called it needle cast.

My yuki snowflakes all dried out terribley last year when I had them in south full sun. I moved them this spring to the north side of my house where they get part sun and they are doing MUCH better. I am in Michigan zone 6. Good luck!!

I live in 5b and have 3 microbiota. Also I’ve noticed a large planting of these at a place nearby in zone 6a. In both areas the microbiota brown almost completely in the winter but green up nicely in the spring. When this happened to the first one I purchased, which was potted the first winter, I was pretty sure it was dead! Fortunately I happened to notice the other planting starting to green up and sure enough mine was fine too. The large planting looks to be about 10 years old and is doing well. Your project looks very successful and has lots of good thoughts for dealing with boundary issues.

Interesting as always. My little Ground Hug aronia were noshed by the deer so I put some wire cloches on them and this year spray seems to be working. The foliage is still a fresh shiny green and it's 90 today (Zone 6b Hudson Valley). The jury is out for me on ninebarks. One I have is lovely and the other one is a scraggly mess.

Not only for future owners, but for ourselves. Everyone gets older. Our wants change and we get new hobbies. Some years the garden becomes a burden. Weather didn’t cooperate and you don’t get a plant cut down. You don’t want your garden to be like that. Maybe in 10 years you wont be able to keep up? We moved into an old garden. Filled with plants larger than they were planned for, not cared for properly, or just wrong. It happens to the best of us, but I hated ripping out a huge tree because it was the wrong tree for that spot.

Agree with you on evergreen shrubs. I removed many because after 15 years they outgrew their space. They look bad if you try pruning them and it's a lot of work. I do miss having evergreen stems for Christmas.

That's a good point about evergreen shrubs. I have a Japanese Plum Yew that was bought as a 2 gallon shrub and cost $100! I try to look up the time it takes to reach full size (8' by 10 '), but I've had trouble pinning it down. Probably a long time.

I used a lot of Viburnums for screening. Only Ninebark I like is the Ginger wine…it’s beautiful.

I’m a lazy gardener. I don’t bother with plants like boxwood or roses because they’re trouble waiting to happen. Life is short and there are thousands of other plants to choose.

The browning interior needles of the Swiss Stone pine is a natural characteristic but transplant shock causes that too & it may take a few years to adjust. I had one that took 3 years but it still will lose some interior needles because they are older. Don't fret!

I hate ninebarks! Every single one I plant in Colorado 5b dry up and die 😂 and you can’t prune them. So don’t feel bad. They really suck!

Not sure how well elderberry does in your zone. It grows quickly, and is high and wide! It would cover up that eyesore that spoils your view, and it is pretty! Your garden is lovely ! The deer are loving mine, i really hope they leave yours alone.

I was recently told a way to keep deer out of the garden. This person gets cheap socks and infuses kerosene lightly on the socks and applies them to stakes here and there around the plants. I have a lot of deer damage in NC and I will be trying this. This method has worked for the two people that recommended this method.

Zone 5b and i don’t need to sacrifice my small garden space for non flowering shrubs and perennials so I don’t have many evergreens and grasses. Winter is hibernation for me too so no need to enjoy the garden space when it’s 10 degrees

Well boxwood is doomed here in Michigan too, box moth was confirmed here this year in a few Se counties. They will have a hayday once the reach the county to the north of me as its where all the rich houses are that have formal landscapes which have a ton of boxwood(oakland county) if your local. Honestly maybe the dogwoods should have been large purple smoke bushes/trees, you dont have really any red color.

I didn’t want red. Think quiet textured backdrop that lets the garden be the star, not “look at me” drama queen. I don’t know where the idea that all spaces need a rainbow of foliage colors came from, but it was never the goal for this design, and even people who prefer a more raucous color scheme rarely apply that concept to hedges and screening plantings. Pagoda dogwoods, which are native here, offer stunning three-season interest (maybe four if tiered branching counts as winter interest) and forage for birds. Cotinus is not native, offers nothing but purple foliage (I don’t care for the flowers so don’t allow them to bloom) and has no significant value to wildlife. For me, that’s a no brainer. Others will undoubtedly have a different opinion.

@@TheImpatientGardener I’ve always heard you need 4 colors to complete a bed green,red, blue and yellow. Do I follow that either no but I keep it in the back of my mind. I also like more color chaos in the garden. Both my annual and perennial plantings show that 🤪. Most people have a palette mine is just all the colors. It’s easier to be a hypocrite online writing the first thought that comes to ur mind.

I have a fothergilla in the shadiest corner of my yard, between a stockade fence and the corner made by the garage wall. It has done well despite being in limey Indiana soil and shade. Double Play Doozie spirea has not pleased me. Last spring the first flush of reddish flowers was lovely BUT they age to a dark brown. My nameless spireas age to a much lighter, blend in better tan. There is a NEED to keep pruning off the spent on Double Play Doozie and I was not expecting that. It NEVER looks nice. Yes the new growth is red and pretty but unless I get back out there yet again, and prune off ALL the spent blooms, most of what you see are the brown areas. I am moving mine to a MUCH less visible location! No plant is worthy of that much constant snipping and pruning! A bit confused why there are so many low growing plants when screening is the goal.

FYI The deer decimate our inkberries in winter. As you know, things they leave alone in summer are often nibbled when their choices are limited. I’ve even had boxwood limbs ripped off 🙄😫

The hemlock tree is so pretty. The neighbor's cabin is cute but the placement of the port-a-potty right next to your garage is tacky and a bit rude. Maybe you could create a temporary, decorative fence panel or gate to screen off that 'bathroom' view.

I'm definitely not an expert, but it definitely looks like a number of the new shrubs are struggling. If you're giving them enough food and water, then I'm wondering what you've used for mulch. It might be bothering them 🤔 💚

What looks like it’s struggling to you? I’d be curious to know. The only ones that seem a bit off to me are the winterberries and the semi-normal needle drop on the Pinus cembra. As for food, they’ve received none, which is the correct planting method for trees and shrubs. Pushing new growth on just-planted shrubs is a bad idea.

I'm sorry, Erin, I don't really remember now. I do remember thinking that the boxwood looked great, but some other things like that pine and the winterberries looked a bit stressed. Maybe it was the yellowish sunlight? Sometimes the amera distorts. So you don't use BioTone starter for new plants?

I guess I just don’t feel like four plants out of more than 60 that look a little stressed in a new planting qualified as an across-the-board problem, much less in the driest summer on record. I use a root stimulating fertilizer at the time of planting on trees and an Organic Mechanic root zone pack on shrubs, but I don’t consider either of these as “food.”

@TheImpatientGardener I actually most likely agree. I realize some comments can come across as nitpicking, not my intention at all. Where I live in southeastern New York, the heat and humidity have been intense 😳

What about Cedar trees? Seems like Cedar trees would be perfect there. May knock off some wind from the lakeshore Beach too. 😉

@@TheImpatientGardener Really? It was a tongue in cheek comment, but it honestly does seem like they’d grow well there, all joking aside. 🤔 We have cedar here, and they do well. Slow growing though. They are so pretty covered in snow, a rarity here in the south. 😟
