The plant that nearly broke me 🌿 Repotting giant clematis

These 'Little Bas' clematis have only been in these large pots for four years, and boy, they did not want to come out. I spent about six hours over two weekends fighting with these guys!

AGREE - to jobs YET to undertake!!! I'm procrastinating removing and replacing the wood edging at my one flowerbed that's rotted. It's the rebar removal/reinstallation that's delaying this project -- can my 5'6 110# 66 yr. old body handle it??? (excuses...). Guess i won't know 'til I try, huh?

Girl! 😂😂😂 I dug out, divided, and transplanted a 30 year old clematis last year, and it had me crying out for Jesus! AND Only the parent plant seems to have survived the winter.

@TheImpatientGardener 💥 I went out and checked on the 2 divisions after I commented. One of them *does have a sprig or 2* coming from the base! The mother plant is vigorous! I had to move my vine for new siding. It was too close to the house anyway and in the ground, not a planter. Here's what I did. This may or may not be good advice: I'm working with the same clematis type. I cut them down to the ground every year, so it had a couple of 4" tall and 1/2" - 1" diameter woody trunks. After much effort and 1 broken shovel handle, I ended up just sawing through the tap roots as deep as I could get to. Then, I pulled off 2 divisions and pruned the remaining roots to about 12" from the woody trunk. It pretty much looked like an octopus by the time I got it out of the ground. Bare root, no soil. I cut off all the spurs except 2 (for photosynthesis' sake). I buried it over a "cone of dirt" about 1" deeper than it was before. Of course, I did this mid-summer when you're not supposed to. It didn't grow any new spurs for the rest of the season. This year, the mother plant has about 15 spurs. You did a much better job than I did. You should be alright! 😉 BTW I am also guilty of using the kitchen knives, bowls, collanders and serving spoons.

Holy Cow, there was nothing little about the root ball of the 'Little Bas' clematis. Erin, I completely agree with you about NOT using landscape fabric anywhere on my property after all the problems it has caused me over the years. My husband and I thought it was the answer to a multitude of landscaping problems 45-plus years ago. However now, I pull it out everywhere I find some. What a pain! I hope your muscles have recovered from repotting those massive clematis.

So true. I helped a friend take out landscape fabric from garden beds last weekend. Ergh! First, it doesn't do its intended job--weeds had just grown into the mulch on top. Then the weeds rooted into the fabric, making it SO HARD to separate the weeds from the fabric (weeds to yard waste bin, fabric to garbage bin).

I had a sage plant in a pot. I cut the bottom off the pot bottom. Replanted the sage in the pot and now is happy with its roots in the ground. Bunny Quinness does this all the time with lots of large pots in her garden in England.

I am not a clematis expert, I am starting my own trial and error with growing picardy . and Ice blue . All I can say is a ditch the bread knife and get out the saw saw. You have much more ground to cover than me. I love Clematis and have one that I've had for years. Just learning abou these plants, but I do believe they are very hearty and resilant. Thanks for sharing.

I just moved a climbing hydrangea that I anticipate would have tried to take over the world where I had it planted. I moved it to deep shade where it will probably be stunted, but stunted for a climbing hydrangea is still pretty vigorous. Nice work!

My mom loves clematis (she/we live in the PNW). She doesn't use landscape fabric and this has happened to every single clematis she's grown in a pot (I know this because I've been the person who has moved her pots which were also 24" but round). I think it is fairly safe to say that planted a clematis in a pot makes for a very happy but over a couple of years very root bound plant.

Had a two year old clematis, doing very well, but not getting great sun. Type? Purple, prolific. Decided the front of my house would be better, along with a change in trellis. Thought, foolish me, that I would shove the shovel in three or four times and lift that baby right out of the ground. Yes, the roots are yellow, and so it was apparent that there were lots and lots of roots. The hole got wider, and the job got bigger. I simply could not believe that this dainty, fragile looking plant had the roots of a tank. Finally got it out, and had seedlings grow there for two straight years. It has thrived in its new home, is covered with flowers, and will never be dug out, by me at least.

I dare say the landscape fabric helped. Can you imagine if all the roots that were stuck in the fabric found the ground, anchored in, got strong & beefy and were tangled between the slats, the drainage holes and the ground. You'd have to cut it loose from the earth then proceed to meticulously free the slats from roots

Hey Erin, Get yourself a pair of copper infused compression gloves. I have a pair and I put them on after I wash up and glob on the lotion after a hard day in the garden. Has really helped my hands recover!

Never fear. I repotted 2 of my potted Clematis late winter. They were an equal struggle for me. It took me two days to get one unstuck from its terracotta pot and I was sure I had killed it because there was only a tiny piece of crown left. So I dug a big hole in the garden, plopped it in with, hopefully, the crown pointing up, and it is doing great with lots of buds about ready to bloom. Granted, it only has one stem, but a big win in my book. The other one was a bit easier, only taking one day, and I moved it up to a bigger pot and it is absolutely loaded with beautiful blooms. It was worth it, because they were both struggling in their old pots.

I recently wrestled a cryptomeria nana globosa out of a large planter for the same reason! It was a monster root ball with very little soil left! It’s now planted in the landscape and much happier! Love your channel!

Those roots reminded me of the remake of War of the Worlds where the vines were everywhere. Very spooky. Would it be good to pot them in a fabric pot so the roots would self prune? I feel your pain, literally. I broke 2 shovels and hurt my and my husband’s back when we moved and divided 20 year old peonies. Never again! Dividing large grasses was horrible too.

All hail the common bread knife! I used to use a bread knife to saw apart plant root balls as a propagator for a nursery so when I saw that I was hoping you knew about using one. So glad that worked! Man,, that was crazy though! You just busted all those romantic ideas people have about gardening I think. 😂 The garden soil facial is a nice touch, btw. This video provides several great tips. My guess is the other box will be easier now.

I can feel your pain I just took out an asparagus fern from a pot it had been in for 2 years. It took 4 hours of prying tugging and chopping with a a shovel before I got that thing out. I tend to had to use a pruning saw to cut off 3/4 of the root ball. It had no dirt left in the pot. I know it’s very unhappy right now but in 3 weeks it’s going to be loving all that fresh soil and fertilizer. What a job!

Love this video ! I feel your pain because this is the way I garden. An 1830’s farmhouse and every flower bed is hiding the secret of “industrial strength” landscape fabric about eight inches beneath the surface 😭! I can’t plant anything without running into what you discovered in your planter. Never, never,never start a flowerbed with landscape fabric, please 🙏

And don't use rubber mulch. My neighbors' daughter just started spreading it around her yard. I gave them reasons why that wasn't a good idea. Dad said her yard smells like tires. Exactly! Petroleum product will leach into the soil.

Wow, impressive! I’ve been known to get out the electric carving knife (Thanksgiving turkey), and even the Sawzall to tackle some fierce tree roots.

My go-to tool for digging out, root pruning or anything that needs cutting is a DeWalt cordless reciprocating saw with an 8-inch sawtooth blade. Took me over 40-yrs of gardening to come to that conclusion!

I agree! I have used mine for several years after seeing another YT gardener show how she divides plants with one. So easy to pop out blades when they're dull (I save the dull blades for when I need to cut out tree roots). I gave away a corded hedge trimmer (blade was dull) to my brother. 😆

Holy moly! It does feel good after it’s all done though. I just fought with a foxtail fern that was in a metal tub. It too was a ball of roots and I had a heck of a time dividing that thing! i used a tree saw and a shovel. The amount of roots, thick ones and tiny ones, plus those ball things was crazy! 💪🏼 I got 3 plants, let hope they all survive.

Oh no, the down - side of big pots? 😄 Hard to handle.. I am thinking if you put the landscape fabric so on the bottom, that it comes up to the sides in one piece, than you could grab the fabric and pull the soil out with that next time. Because the roots cling to it 😊. I know you want to avoid it, but just a thought. This is funny and timely because I transplanted a [fall-flowering] clematis just yesterday. I built a new arbor in a different location so I dug it out of the ground, where it had been for the last four years. I'm sure it will make it, but I hope I didn't wreck a lot of the new growth as I was moving it and then trying to tie it to the arbor to "train it up." Here in NE Ohio it has already grown about 16 inches.

You are a warrior. I have a rosemary in a huge deck pot that is the same situation.. advil and a hot shower! I have a clematis that is in the cutout planter for forty two years. I only add fertilizer each year. It’s massive. I inspire me to do my Rosemary pot.

I completely feel your pain! I had a plant do similar in a square pot and I ended up just smashing the pot. I couldn’t take it anymore 😂. I also won’t ever plant in a square pot again. It was so much harder than removing from a round planter once it was root bound. Hats off to you, sister, that’s a lot of work!

Bunny Guiness just cuts the bottom of planters out and leaves them. They grow into the ground and do great. Maybe you could do that? I love it and it does look happy! 😊

OMG Erin I JUST went through a painful time-consuming saga of removing a jasmine from a square pot that is about 15”x15”. It took hours and I almost destroyed the pot in the process The problem with my jasmine was the root ball filled the entire cube shaped pot and the top of the pot has an overhang that goes inside. So if the rootball fills up the pot you literally can’t get it out. I was sore for days after finally getting it out. I ended up putting the jasmine in a raised bed that is bigger. Way to win the battle! Would you ever consider bottomless pots? I’ve resorted to using our bread knife but now use a cheap drywall saw. It works great!

I'm glad I'm not the only one using my actual bread knife for gardening. I planted a clematis in a container too and those roots are bonkers and it was fight just like this.

A sawzall is my go to if it’s huge or I use an old pruning saw to go through roots.

This video is so relatable. Reminds me of a Japanese Maple and a bright idea one day, to plant it in a metal garbage can. 5 yrs later we had to saw the can in half hahaha. It was like wrestling a Octopus with razor sharp edges. 😂
