I have a ton of this at my new house (also SE WI), which has a long-neglected and overgrown yard, and this is what my best guess was. Thanks for confirming/agreeing with that guess! I’ve seen that it can be aggressive in more open soil, but at this point I’m more worried about the pervasive garlic mustard and thistles, so I’m letting it do its thing…

Hello Erin. I feel weird giving you suggestions, but everytime you do a tour of the shade and creek gardens I ask myself:"Has she ever considered placing a few large special stones along the side of the creek or in the actual planting to accentuate light and dark and add a little variety (besides shape and color)?" I'm not talking about changing the topography of Wisconsin a la Garden Answer, just a few special rocks that would speak to the woodland/ creekside feel. Love your videos. Thanks, Victoria.
@teresab65022 ай бұрын
I've wondered too about placing some rocks or large stones along the creek to stabilize the edges. I think it would add some interest to the woodland area.
@Jpatmeadowbrook2 ай бұрын
In NJ rocks are a penny a pound and you usually need equipment to move them. I like the idea of landscaping by the stream with elderberry, switch grass -panicum virgatum,soft meadow cordgrass -spartina patens, white turtlehead-chelonne glabra, lobelia cardinais. I have sweet pepper bush-Clethera alnifolia that is holding up with this drought (I don’t water). Ps: you look great! and the dogs are an added treat to your already great videos. The best part of being a Master Gardener is sharing info🥰
@TheImpatientGardener2 ай бұрын
Oh I think about stones all the time. And then I remember that I swore off moving stones at least five years ago after retaining walls and paths broke my stone-lifting spirit. The real solution is actually a stone-lined creek (like a mason-built stone wall), as my neighbors to the east have, but I'm not interested in the destruction or money that would be involved in that. I feel confident that appropriate plants can solve the issue, and I know I can do those myself.

That Japanese maple is gorgeous the hole in the middle adds to the structural element of it and helps with that lacy look similar to what Cornus Florida does in part to fill shade. Also I’m curious as you why you don’t like geranium Rozanne? I’ve just got into hardy geraniums and it is the first one I bought because it is known to be the heaviest flowering. If you know of any others with different colors//growth habits that flower heavily all growing season please let me know!

Hi Erin - I tried beneficial nematodes to combat a new infestation of asparagus beetles. I'd say it worked 85% with just one application. If I had made a follow up application a few weeks later, I think it would have wiped them out entirely. Since these are natural predators, it's probably considered organic. I believe the nematodes work on the beetle larva underground, so you may still have time to drench the soil this year. The type I purchased work to eradicate a large list of pests...even Japanese Beetles, so I sprayed the leftover nematodes under my roses. It seemed to help with those too.

I think you would like the Max Frei Geranium in the area where you have many other hardy geraniums. It has a very neat habit, flowers in early summer and off and on throughout the season (depending on rain for me). And in the fall it has a burgundy tint to the leaves.

My only experience yet though is that my mom and I have kept our sarracenia purpurea venosas alive for the past year, so we want to expand and keep more species lol. I needed to sit down after being at the garden center and your video was right on time and topic. That's one of the 1,000 reasons I show up here whenever you post. I was finished except for 4 perennials poised where they would be planted today. Then I went to the garden center and more grasses and a Blue Arrow juniper followed me home. The japanese maple tree is easier to pronounce when you pronounce the blue flower ACK' oh night. Then the tree name Ack' oh night ah folium rumbles off the tongue easier for us midwesterners. You could also call it by its japanese cultivar name mai kujaku (MY' koo jack koo) also. The Dancing Peacock.

Carnivorous plants are super cool & surprisingly not as difficult as I thought as long as you pick varieties that are suitible for your climate & light conditions. Summer Rayne Oaks did a video on carnivorous plants for her Flock Finger Lakes channel that was a collaboration with a grower/botanical garden down south, I learned so much from that.

LITERALLY! I had 3 of those same little caryxes (caryxi?) pop up in my yard this year, too. We have a lot of woods, and they popped up out of nowhere. I love them! I might transplant them to someplace more noticeable, and I believe they are some sort of native grass, too.
@aneditor1002 ай бұрын
When I grow dahlias, they are bothered by earwigs. The earwigs climb up the stems and nestle in the flowers and eat the petals. I now spread diatomaceous earth (DE) around the plants when they are about six inches tall, and that keeps both the slugs and the earwigs away from them. It has worked very well. I am unfamiliar with cucumber beetles, but if they are getting to the flowers in your garden by climbing the stems, they might be deterred by the DE. I have been enjoying your videos, particularly the Sip'n and Strolls, all year. And your new pup Mangus is a lot fun to watch too. Thank you for making such beautiful gardens and helping us do the same. :)
@aneditor1002 ай бұрын
I just answered my own question: cucumber beetles fly. So DE would not help. Oh well. What a shame. Captain Jack would work, but it would be as bad on blossoms as the beetles. :)

Beautiful garden and fall colors. In our garden we're working on minimum grass, so as I develop new garden beds, I put cardboard down or contractor paper (scored a good sale at Lowe's) but I do prefer cardboard because it smother grass and weeds better. I wet the cardboard on all sides, overlap it and lay mulch or woodchips over it, about 4" to 6". If I already planted something, I like to use packing paper or add papers from the grocery stores, so it would break down faster. Work really well and only very stubborn weeds would still pop thru (dandelions, wild onions and the most hated Bermuda grass). But it still so much easier to take care of. Wishing you the besta

I live in town of Omro WI & on Tuesday October 15th we had pea sized hail.Then that night anything not under a tree or up close to the house frosted with my temperature being 29 degrees. I thought that this was quite unusual because I live by Lake Butte des Morts and most of the time we get frost later than anyone else. It is a good thing I pulled all the green tomatoes off my plants before it frosted. So it has been a strange fall for me. Happy that I still have my flowers that are under the trees & up by the house. It’s great you still haven’t had frost.

What is your last day to plant evergreens and perennials ? So many good deals right now !
@TheImpatientGardener2 ай бұрын
In my opinion it's too late to plant evergreens here, but for non-evergreens I go with 6 weeks before the ground freezes, which I'm guessing is usually mid-December, so that would put us around early November for wrapping up planting. At this point the biggest issue is keeping everything watered so I've stopped planting and I'm focusing on keeping newly planted things happy until freeze.

I cut my Allium ‘Millieum’ to the ground before they go to seed. They reseed greatly in my SE Michigan (Z6a) garden. But pretty easy to pull out with a soil knife, if you want to spend the time, unlike Northern Sea Oats which a shovel is needed to dig out seedlings. It takes a few years for Northern Sea Oats to set seed and germinate. Be patient, in a few years you’ll have more then enough. I now cut my back before the seed heads turn brown.
@TheImpatientGardener2 ай бұрын
It's so interesting that some gardeners see a lot of reseeding with Millennium, particularly as almost every horticultural reference says its flowers have lower fertility than most varieties (many sources say "very low" fertility, Missouri Botanic Garden says 50-70% fertile flowers, which I don't consider low). I've definitely not noticed it in my garden (unlike the spring-blooming 'Purple Sensation', although that is dead easy to pull as well).

Erin, your idea or squirrel ranting in the garden doesn't come across to me like that. It sounds like me thinking through things in the garden. Cucumber beetles have been awful in my drought ridden NE Oklahoma garden. I love that you pointed out stress on plants with the correlation of pests.
