Seppuku is actually a form of ritual suicide in order to restore the offender's honour, it was also used as a form of execution but the beheading is not actually the execution itself, only part of it. The person committing Seppuku uses a short blade traditionally a Tantō to stab and cut open their gut infront of spectators, afterwards a second person called a Kaishakunin is brought to then behead the person in order to not prolong the suffering of a painful death as well as spare the spectators from watching someone slowly and painfully die.

@@alexh349 You do realize that there is oxygen in the blood that is already inside your brain, correct? No one is talking about movement, of course the head cannot move without being attached to the body. However consciousness did in fact remain in a severed head for some small amount of time. Same way that heart attack victims are lucid for some small amount of time after their heart has already stopped. Hearing and vision would remain intact, and apparently lucidity as well. To think that it all just shuts off the instant the blade passes through your neck is asinine to be honest. The only thing that turns off consciousness instantly is a an injury that destroys the brain, like a gunshot wound or other traumatic injury to the head.

Let it be clear, guillotine is the best method of execution even today, it's quick and there is no suffering, which is not true for lethal injections or electric chair, methods still used in the US. The only barbaric thing is execution itself, which was thankfully banned in most civilised countries except the US. France, Germany, Sweden, Belgium and Switzerland used the guillotine before abolition. It was a highly civilised way of doing a very barbaric thing.

a heavier blade does not fall quicker, like you mentioned. what you probably wanted to say, is, that a heavier blade generates more force. F = mass * acceleration. since the acceleration is equal for any object ( put aside the air resistance) every object falls at the same speed. Since it is a heavier blade though, it has more force, easier to decapitate ^^

Charlotte Corday was not executed for killing her husband. She wasn’t married. She was executed for the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat. Marat is was a radical revolutionary newspaperman. This assassination was one of the events to justify “The Terror” part of the French Revolution. The is a fairly major historical event to get wrong.
