Kate Yeow it’s ironic that the four women were kind of polar opposites of each other-Catherine of Aragon, Mary I of England, Anne Boleyn, and Elizabeth I of England-in their lifetimes. Catherine of Aragon was much beloved by the English people, whereas Anne Boleyn was very much disliked. And their daughters were the opposite reputation to their mothers. Elizabeth I was popular, unlike her mother, and Mary I was not loved like her mother was.

At a point you can’t control it. People develop psychological problems through trauma etc. They don’t want to be bad but it’s all numb, it’s just pain. I believe there are people who are evil because they are truly bad people, although a lot, are just really really hurt and messed up.

I think hate is the wrong word to describe Mary and Elizabeth's relationship. They had their ups and downs, but even in the end when all of Mary's advisers were pressuring her to sign Lizzie's death warrant she couldn't bring herself to do it. Part of it was her fear of God's judgment if it turned out Elizabeth was innocent of her supposed treason, but another part was Elizabeth WAS her sister whom she loved.

Also, Mary didn't have her father's ruthlessness in removing inconvenient people. She was considered merciful to the point of being too soft. Removing heretics, though - no hesitation or mercy there!

@Cool Dude, listen up. She was foreshadowed and was traumatized, it takes a toll on some people. People believe her actions were sick, yes, but she thought that when she burned them it burned all their sins off and they would go to Heaven, considering her strong Catholicity. So you should not be able to go around saying that she's a horrible person just because you don't understand her story completely.

Add me to the 'victim' column. The reason she was so obsessive likely related to it being the only mental refuge she had. Stripped of everything she had ever known, the one thing they couldn't possibly take was her faith. Thus, any perceived threat to catholicism was also a threat to the very foundation of her being. I imagine that her endometriosis and other hardships also likely gave her a belief that hardship was the foundation of faith and pain the path to salvation.

I think that Mary was both a victim, and a monster. What happened in her life made her become the monster, but she was also both the victim because her father, and her brother, treated her badly. Plus, she was never married until she took over the throne, and her father forced her to squash her religious beliefs throughout his reign in her later life. She wanted so desperately to have a child that the poor woman manage to trick herself into thinking that she was pregnant when she wasn’t, further proving that at times, she just wasn’t in reality either. She clearly had mental issues as well as physical issues.
