The re-establishment of Marine Corps SOF in 2006 was more of a political or bureaucratic move, as Marine Corps leaders saw how their marines were left out from all the fighting in the early stages of the Afghanistan invasion 2001, as most fighting were done by SOFs, which the Marine Corps lacked. This led them to initiate Det 1, a pilot program to determine the suitability of a USMC element operating under SOCOM, which led to the creation of MSOB in 2006. However, they don't bring anything new on the table that SOCOM doesn't already have. But of course, Marine Raiders are still an effective unit with accomplishments of its own; not taking that away. 1 big difference is that Marine Raiders only recruit marines that have been in service for several years, in contrast to Navy SEALs, that takes civies directly off the street.
@BlossomField917 ай бұрын
I don't get why the USMC doesn't offer Raider enlistment contracts. The direct civilian pipelines for the Navy SEALs and the Army's 18X and Option 40 programs are very successful and a recruiting win-win. The guy makes it through selection and joins the Raiders? Congratulations, you've recruited a stud who may have never otherwise enlisted in the Marine Corps. He fails? Oh well, he can be sent where the service has difficulty with recruiting/retention.

No spec ops unit is better than one another. It’s all about specialty, mission set, and funding which collectively dictates the type of focused training. There’s a lot of overlap in most of the general training and operators move and try out for other units. For instance, SEALs or Marine Force Recon are like fish in the water and can conduct VBSS operations to perfection - whereas SF is focused on more unconventional tactics and warfare that require more long-term planning and execution. U.S. Army Special Forces, a.k.a The Green Berets, are the only Special Forces in the U.S. military. All other branches Special Operations teams are called just that, Special Operations. Special Operations is the umbrella term that ALL the organizations that are in SOCOM fall under. U.S. Army Special Forces is a specific title for a specific organization, not an umbrella term.

I was an 8541. Snipers are considered part of the conventional battle order organic to conventional operations. Not special forces. We were recruited from and trained in the fleet division in which we arrived from ITS. Raiders are a repraisal of a WW2 concept from which Amphib recon was developed. They are the first Marine component to ever be considered "Special Forces", or anything like it. We also have Marine security forces (FAST) anti terror started in the 80's, but I haven't heard much about that.

@binladen-xp4obMore specifically I've heard SOC as far back as the 80's referring to specific Marine and Navy specialized assets. To my knowledge there are no Marine 'Special Warfare'. Marine Recon and snipers are fleet assets. Recon belong to recon units but snipers with the MOS(was 8541 but now it's still 03 series) designation change are organic to conventional rifle Bn's. I don't know if recon 'snipers', Force or company, have their MOS changed.

I've never met a seal and I've met many, whose struck fear into my soul quite like my father lol. That being said, regardless of how many people he killed, he was an amazing person.... The ptsd was horrible on him though. He couldnt even watch the movies full metal jacket or platoon... I hope he found the peace in death which eluded him in life.

Think of it this way: both units are Tier 1 and are highly capable. SEALs are just able to operate in marine environments whereas other SF groups cannot.

The Marines do not have any Tier 1 units. Navy Seals fall under two categories. Regular "vanilla" Seals are also Tier 2. The Seals that are part of Team Six are Tier 1. The only other Tier 1 Unit in the US Military belongs to the Army and that is Delta boys.

The 5 Tier 1 Units In The US Military #1. DEVGRU: DEVGRU is also known as SEAL Team 6. They are the US Navy’s elite SMU that specializes in counter-terrorism and hostage rescue. #2. Delta Force: Delta Force is a Combat Applications Group of the US Army. The main mission of the Delta Force is counter-terrorism. #3. 24th Special Tactics Squadron: The US Air Force’s 24th Special Tactics Squadron provides air support and control for the other Tier 1 units. #4. Intelligence Support Activity: The US Army Intelligence Support Activity provides mission essential information for other JSOC units. #5. Army Ranger Regimental Recon Company: A part of the 75th Ranger Regiment Special Troops Battalion provides special reconnaissance to support JSOC missions.

Not sure if you know exactly what the SEALS do and where they operate. But, yes they do get down in the aquatic environment.
@chrisc268310 ай бұрын
@@stevenkidd6761 so I stand corrected. You are right. The US has more than 2 Tier 1 SMUs. Thank you for taking the time to explain this.

The Marine mentality is just purely ego driven. No, not all Marines are anything special, and their only 'elite' status came from being an amphibious assault trained group (though the Army did it first, and better). Marines are not on par with SeALs, Rangers, Special Forces, etc. Marine Raiders are vastly superior to rank and file Marines; same for Recon and Force Recon. Marine leadership just has a hard time facing reality, that's why the idiots almost missed out on joining groups like USSOCOM, and almost didn't create MARSOC.

You have no idea what you’re talking about.

@@Jawbeezie At least part of what he is saying is correct. The Marines believe every Marine is elite and special. They are not but the Marines do have a very high espirit de corps and they are very proud of their service as they should be. The big Marine corps didn't want any Marine to be considered special and they didn't want any Marine to be controlled by someone else other than themselves. They used to have recon Marines and Force reconnaissance Marines both of which were special operations capable but not special operations forces. They did roughly the same stuff but for different structures within the Marine corps. MARSOC had to be created and given new capabilities and skills and they are a part of SOCOM and JSOC. One of the reasons the Marines did it was for funding etc. Fun fact: US Army Special Forces helped them stand up and qualify the new unit and their pipeline is modeled after the SF pipeline. Oh, and there is only one Special Forces and that is the US Army Special Forces AKA Green Berets. Everyone else is SOF, special operations forces or SOC, special operations capable.
