Seeing a major sporting event live is a thrilling experience, to be close to the athletes as they battle to win the match, but that experience is the closet you can get to seeing a real life gladiator match at the Colosseum. In today's video we're going back in history to see what experiencing the gladiator fights first hand as a fan would be like, and just how brutal the real gladiator matches were.

I’m just gonna say that almost all of the stories you hear off to the death gladiator fights weren’t actually gladiators, but criminals forced to fight as punishment, where they would fight and fight until they died or became so popular with the crowd they were spared. Gladiators would stop fighting when the other was knocked out or too injured to carry on, not when the other was dead. It was more like a boxing fight with weapons.

Just so you know the walls were higher then 15 feet. They are wrong about that. 15 feet is 1 1/2 stories tall. Houses are taller then that. And its not just "raising your arm" for surrender or submission its you raised 2 fingers. Index and middle fingers. How did they get so much wrong.

Many were not. The ones that were professionally trained trained for most of their lives, perfecting their skill in a special gladiator school. However, often, gladiator matches consisted of criminals. In some cases, the criminals were stripped of all clothing and armor, outfitted with a helmet with no eye holes, and a sword. This, as you can probably guess, resulted in a lot of deaths. However, those “gladiators” were no the actual professional ones. The professional ones were more or less athletes, and only around 1/5 of the time there was a death with these gladiators, usually by accident, or a gladiator being too wounded and killed after the fight

Awesome effort, really enjoyable, congratulations. However, there was no such thing as "thumbs up, thumbs down" on gladiator fights. If you want the loser alive, you just wave the tip of your toga and say "missio"; if you want him dead, you just say "iugula" (behead) and move your thumb under your throat from one side to another, as we still do today, and that's all. At the Colosseum, the Vestal Virgins decided who must die or live.

No, the emperor has a budget too, he's not going to just randomly waste what could be the cost of a company's equipment for nothing. Especially over the course of long events like Titus'. It was more like a boxing match. People would cheer them on and gladiators rarely died as it was way too expensive. If it got too brutal, the referee would step between them and stop them.
