all those countries are based off ethnic background, the immigration to places like france spain and UK were from their former colonial spheres of influence. those people weren't initially seen as a fellow countryman but not Spanish, English or French. To suggest a dismissal of national identity is to dismiss the basis of the foundings of these nations, which i would suggest is just as impossible as the stability of nations drawn up by sykes-picot
