Top ten picks rarely make immediate impacts. When they do its amazing, but fans need to ease their presumptions. Piling expectations on these kids is a good way to ruin them. A top ten pick is going to be a useful NHL player if developed right but not a guaranteed star that's just not statistically factual. And sometimes they do become stars it just takes way longer than fans want.

Well said. Only time will tell. Fans calling him a bust already is definitely not a way to help our players confidence. In fact its idiotic, since their have been so many players that have become great, who did not blossom until they were around 20-23, and then boom, exploded on to the scene.

Listen, all I’ll say is Wright’s development was handled way better than Slaf’s development. Since camp, you could clearly see Slaf wasn’t ready to handle the rigours of the NHL. Beck and Mesar had better camps and the right decision was taken in their cases. I just feel this year was a waste development wise. Having him play half a season in the AHL would have been excellent for his development. He would have gotten acclimatized to the NA game without having to deal with the pace and physicality of the NHL. This year was the year to send him down. Next year, if he falters, sending him to the A would be seen as a major step back and could ultimately mess with his confidence/mentality.

im really astonished by the amount of retarded takes in the youtube comment section regarding this matter. the reason why slaf isnt in the nhl is because the rockets are gutted this year. oh, and because of marty's magic. look at caufield, dach, guhle, etc. all youngsters thriving under him, why not trust him with slaf's development too?
@obiejean

@@zxshark9119 you know you’re argument is weak when it starts with an insult. Caufield spent time in the AHL before killing it in the NHL. Guhle started his NHL career at 20 not at 18. Quick question for you thought, what did you see from Slaf that made you believe he was NHL ready? Kent Hughes himself said Slaf needs to completely change his game to fit the NA model. It’s insane to me that some people think the AHL for an 18 year kid is a sign of failure. Gutted or not, with the rockets, he’d get between 15-18 mins of ice time, PP1 opportunities and the ability to develop his game at a lower pace level…

It’s also okay to admit the Guy’s draft stock was hyper inflated. He’s not going to be nearly as good as Wright and Cooley. MTL should’ve drafted either one and solidified their top 2 centres. Slaf looks more like Kirby Dach than he does Rantanen
@pugzi101
@pugzi101 Жыл бұрын
@@yothythoty729 Rantanen wasn't in the NHL at 18 so you have no comparison value here. Rantanen had 39 points in 75 games as an 20 years old averaging 18 minutes per game. 18 minutes per game is exactly the ice time Caufield was getting this season. 10 points in 39 games averaging 12 minutes a game playing mostly with third liners on a very bad team is pretty good for slaf. He probably should starts next season in the AHL thought just to get the 18-20 mins needed to develop the same way rantanen did prior to his arrival in the NHL. He is gonna have to learn to keep his head up too. He was caught many times with his head down.

All that really matters is where they end up in 3 years. I think MTL being the market it is, and the pressure put upon them really screwed the pooch. Give him some time in the AHL or lower levels and make them develop at levels where they are not overmatched by MEN.. Some guys can step in and make immediate impact (See Sidney Crosby or Ovi).. but most won't. Even Connor McDavid took a few seasons to become the player he is today. The fact that there was questions about who should be taken #1.. meant both needed more time. Only when you have a no-doubter should you consider putting them straight into the NHL.

Byfield was supposed to be a project pick anyways, and Lafreniere has been stuck with a rangers organization that doesn’t play their young guys and can’t develop them, sure raymond is great but the wings also developed him and gave him opportunity to play in a role he can succeed in, rangers woulda screwed him up too if they took him

Byfield is still to be determined but everyone can see Laf is and was overrated. I don’t think he’s a bust but he’s going to end up being a decent two way second line winger. I think he was just so much better than every other prospect at 16/17 and they’ve now caught up and surpassed him. Regardless of the rangers system, he doesn’t show much flash of anything. Watch an analysis on his game. He does not see the ice well

The habs alrdy have a lot of D in their prospect pool. Probably too much to fill a team to begin with (guhle, xhekaj, harris, mailloux, struble, norlinder, hutson, kovacevic, etc) Just as well, trading down for the 2nd pick in no way guaranteed that the devils wouldnt pick nemec at 1st anyway, as they have lots of forwards but a lack of defense in their prospect pool. If anything, the question is why they didnt pick cooley if theyre worried about a lack of scoring - not that i even agree with this notion personally, im just saying if not slaf, nemec wasnt really an option, as good as he may be

Both players are from a weak draft…the weakest in at least several seasons. Even so neither players are expected to be stars, in fact neither player is expected to be semi-stars. What they both bring to their teams is “hope” that they develop into something useful. Pretty sad draft season for two players battling for the top two spots. In fact…barely worth mentioning. Comparing to Lafrenierre…who plays and hopefully develops on the Rangers kid line…pretty tough situation for Lafrennierre.
