Wheeler was drafted by the Coyotes. He refused to report and went to Boston. Years later, Atlanta traded for Wheeler then moved to Winnipeg.

Wheeler was drafted by Phoenix. Not Winnipeg. And after college, he didn't sign an ELC with the Coyotes, became a UFA, and was signed by the Bruins. So you can't give that one to the Jets management. Scheifele was a brilliant move though.

For those wondering about Sergei Bautin, yes, he was so off the board that TSN thought the Jets had taken Sergei Brylin. (Which would have been a bit of a reach, but at least plausible in that slot.) That was the draft that Mike Smith went nuts taking Russians - 9 of 12 picks. The two he got remotely right were #27 Boris Mironov, who had a reasonable career for that slot, and #204 Nikolai Khabibulin. That draft was heavy in late-round steals, but the Bulin Wall was the best theft of all.

Smith was a train wreck. I always referred to our team as the Winnipeg Nyets. He was fascinated with the Russians, was always disheveled, and wore sweaters instead of ties. I have the same memory of Brylin, it was actually Bob McKenzie who began talking about it, sounded confused. If you can fool McKenzie you really went off the board. We also had Igor Ulanov the same year. Better than Bautin but injury prone...but his bodychecks were worth the admission price some nights. Maybe Smith saw the writing on the wall in the pre-salary cap NHL, and brining over Russians was his answer to a low spending team.

It could be argued that a discussion can be made between them, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Chicago Blackhawks for the greatest dynasty in the SALARY CAP ERA. In whole NHL history, nah, not a chance. You've got the 70s Montreal Canadiens, the 80s New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers, the 90s Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings. This Tampa Bay Lightning team/core group reached 4 finals and won 2, which is awesome and indeed a great dynasty. Just not the greatest, nope.

He didn’t resign with the Wild and now is with Vancouver. We did get a 56 compensatory pick this year, grabbing Lorenz a wing, so we gave away the 18th overall pick for a 56…..

Blake Wheeler was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes in 2004. The Winnipeg Jets weren't even in the league at that time. The team was still called the Atlanta Thrashers

Yegor Chinakhov was a recent off the board pick. The guy was a 2nd year eligible player who had analysts literally saying "I don't know who this is" and not having any video, and he slept through his own selection because he didn't think he'd be taken so high. But then he won the KHL Rookie of the Year as a top goal scorer for the champion Avangard Omsk. Had his shooting ability compared to Joe Sakic by the Avalanche's former head coach. And Scott Wheeler named him as a Top 5 draft grade revision, switching his projection from non-NHLer to 2nd line sniper.

As for Bautin, he was one of those Russian players who fell through the cracks. Outside of the top tier Russians like Bure, Mogilny and Federov there wasnt much scouting done for Russians in their pro leagues and a lot of teams got their first (and usually only) looks at Russian players at international competition. Bautin was one of the starters on the Russian team that won the Gold in 92. He was a big, solid and strong defender with some really intriguing offensive skills for a stay at home defender. He would never be a star but if he was paired with Phil Housley the idea was that his game would allow Housley to do his thing on the offensive end because Bautin would have his back. What I remember about Bautin was how he physically dominated the space around the crease during the 92 Olympics. He effectively gave Eric Lindros the fits when the Russian United team beat Canada as well as allowed his backline partner Sergei Zubov the space to make some great runs in on goal. That Russian team was not as good as other Russian teams but they still wrecked shop and Bautin was a big reason for that. He was 25 and yeah, maybe Winnipeg could have waited until the 4th or 5th round to grab him but the 92 draft was pretty weak and they were definitely worried that another team had watched Bautin as they did during the 92 Olympica. It was a gamble and it didnt pay off. Bautin had a lot of miles on his legs before he hit the NHL and he never quite acclimated to the style of play in North America but I remember thinking at the time that Winnipeg might have just gotten the steal of the draft with Bautin.

Yes, most all the D-men from both Dynamo and CSKA were drafted by, and played in, the NHL. Bautin was solid, if unspectacular, and eventually found Europe more suitable to his game and lifestyle. The other Russian brute they drafted in the 10th round ... Igor Ulanov ... turned out to be a much more versatile and steady NHL pro. Both played solid positional D, however and had no issue banging with the bigger forwards. The NHL got a little Russo-nutzoid in that 1991-1994 era.

Who questions Yzerman and his picks, we (wings fans)knew he were picking Sieder. We have amazing scouts, look at Holmstrom, Zettiberg, Datsyk, Konstintinov, Drake, Klima, Federov etc etc. None of them first round. We were the only team to send a scout to see Datsyk in his tiny Russian town.

The Red Wings had a great run of success from the mid eighties until about 2010 with a few early runs in the playoffs prior to having their great run in the finals over an extended period.

the weird thing about seider is that he was already a perfect shutdown dman in the german league as an 17 year old. Like even the us scouts didnt question his great matured defensive game, so didnt understand back at the time and still dont why everyone especially the scouts had him so low in the rankings. His coaching team back in mannheim, in the del told him to fully commit to his defensive game, but he still had his high hockey iq, his size, his good skating. Thats a pretty decent first pair d-man.

I will never ever forget the analysts and fans reaction to The Seider pick...and the criticism and mockery of Yzerman taking him at 6.. And thats after all the great drafts he had with Tampa Bay, turning them into multiple cup winners..Yzerman is very thorough in his assessment of players..No one should ever underestimate his knowledge and work he puts in..15 years from now, when Seider may very well be embarking on the end of a HOF Career, we can look back at his pick at #6 and say...Look who got the last laugh..Just sooo happy Stevie Y came back home where he always belonged!

As Someone who saw every Game of seider in germany I can say its just amazongly wrong to say he had an underwhelming season in the DEL… most of the season he saw 17 years old throwing adults around like little puppys. He was underdeveloped defensively in the DEL. He then focused on his defense while with Rögle BK, making him the juggernaut he is now. He was ranked near #20 on a LOT of boards... I'm so glad that Stevie Y saw what he would become before we did! **EDIT: Correction on SHL club

The scouting report actually scouted him as more of an offensively gifted d-man out of DEL. I'm not saying he couldn't play D, just that his game was less suited for the NA game. He worked hard on the finer points of his defensive game in the SHL.

Moritz Seider is my favorite player in the NHL. Yes, he’s the best defenseman I’ve seen in many, many years! Why? Because like the commentator said: He’s a mixture of the modern player and the old school player! It’s nice to see a good player like Moritz playing the game, the way it’s supposed to be played! I’m rooting for him but not when he’s playing my NY Islanders. Lol, Actually, I root for the Red Wings and The Avalanche too, believe it our not! Not because they have the 2 best defenseman in the entire league (though that does help) it’s because of nostalgia. There wasn’t a better rivalry in sports than the Red wings & Avalanche back in the 90s, it was awesome!

Holland not so much. He failed in the 2015 draft when he drafted evgeny svechnikov. Only 7 guys in the 2015 draft haven't hit at least 100 career points in their careers of the top 30 picks. Svechnikov was one. He could have gotten sebastian aho, joel eriksson ek, brock boeser, travis konecny, anthony beaulvillier, roope hintz, daniel sprong, vince dunn, conor garland, kirill kaprizov, troy terry, or mangiapane. All of those guys are better than evgeny svechnikov. Then the 2016 draft he took dennis cholowski over tage thompson, brett howden, jordan kyrou, debrincat, adam fox, jesper bratt, filip gustavsson and carter hart. 2017 he drafted rasmussen over martin necas, nick suzuki, Robert thomas, filip chytil, jake oettinger, jason robertson. 2018 he took zadina over quinn hughes, noah dobson, and joel farabee. We go back further he picked mantha over guys like burakovsky, shea Theodore, and buchnevich to name a few.

Yzerman just like he did in Tampa when he drafted Vasilevskiy, Kucherov and Sergachev he is looking like a genius now with the drafting of Seider. Lucas Raymond has to clean up his defensive game, and the Red Wings are a few years away from contending, but likely trending in the right direction.

Seider is a REALLY good young defensemen. Something that I don't get is how people are saying that these young guys are bringing a new thing to the NHL...As in, bringing together the old and new. But, players like Letang, prime Subban, EK65 (though he doesn't hit much), Josi, Hedman, Burns, have all been doing this for a while. Some, like Letang, for 15 years.

I know it's kinda confusing but the IHL wasn't at a lower competitive level than the AHL (at least not in concept) and was an alternative farm league that some NHL teams used instead of the AHL. If memory serves there were also independent teams in the league that were comprised of former NHLers, failed prospects and international players. So IHL=AHL. I wouldn't be surprised if in actual practice one league was significantly more competitive than the other, but both acted as the highest level of minor league hockey. The ECHL would be on the next tier lower

The IHL as a league heavily struggled and had a far lower soft salary cap. This would inevitably cause weaker competition and less pay. Technically it was on the same level as the AHL, but the infrastructure/competition wasn't up to par

Tbf, you can rarely go wrong with big right shot defenseman. The only other right shot defenseman was Soderstrom ranked higher but Soderstrom is smaller and Swedish defensemans are usually overrated.

Wheeler was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes, but wouldn’t sign with them. He signed with the Bruins, then got traded to the Thrashers, then carried over to the Jets
