My Great Uncle was killed in the "Great War", he died during one of the mustard gas attacks. Before shipping out he proposed to his girl, Winnifred Williams. As a child I received gifts from my "Auntie Winnie" who was a wonderful, caring older lady. I'm now 67 and it wasn't until about five years ago that I asked my mother who she was, as I knew mom had only one sibling, "Dorothy". That was when I learned of Winnie's relationship with my Great Uncle Harold. Winnie never married and was treated by mom's family as if she had been married to my Great Uncle.

War is war and you shouldn't be afraid of what your duty is. The enemy will kill you before you do if you are scared or nervous or anything, don't be afraid of your duty and carry on with your job because no one really cares. Helping your country and killing the enemy is better than sparing him because one day everyone will die and it will just be one big damn thing. Be yourself and carry on.

Wwl was such a waste of an entire generation of young men. Read the books.....guns of august......and......to end all wars. The politicians and generals lived in luxury while the troops suffered the horrors of trench warfare. Also read the book......all quiet on the western front. The 1930s movie with lew ayres is a good adaption of the book . The dumb generals used 1800 era tactics against 20th century weapons like machine guns......... slaughtering millions. What a waste. Also read......war is a racket by usa general smedley butler. U will be angry........like i was when i read the books. There is no glory in war.......just death.....

Please, don't try to speak German if you are not a native speaker! It is better then to keep to english... As a native German, this kills the immersion totally. It sounds wrong and you can't act, if you're not speaking the language fluently. It sounds so... unreal. But the film intends to show 'reality'... The moment I heared this fake-german language, the film lost my attention...
