Hi, we are Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. After selling our house in the UK & travelling Europe in a motorhome for 10 months, we have bought a derelict farm in Ireland. We are keen to try and live an off grid life, free from debt whilst bringing the farm back to its former glory. We are doing this on a very tight budget and plan on doing as much of the work ourselves.

Bec, you're doing a great job with the lime pointing. (Some people use extra large piping bags & squeeze the lime mix into the cracks) If you point the lime mix level with the edge of the bricks, it will have a more even effect. Then, when it's nearly dry, use a wire brush to remove any excess lime to give a smooth look. Keep up the wonderful work😊 All the best to Sam & his family.

The only issue is the mix is very thick with stones at the moment to help the voids. A gun won't work for this mix but maybe for the final smoother layer. 👍 Thanks for the birthday & well wishes.

Happy Birthday Bec, sorry for about the family emergency, but so right for Sam to go back to the UK. Glad that he was able to go. My Mother in Law used to donate monthly to a Donkey Sanctuary in Cornwall, when she passed away last year I had to contact them with the news of her passing and to cancel the direct debit payments. That's a good idea except it's very gritty! It's ripped a couple of my gloves, so it may rip the bag, especially as we do put some aggregate in the mix. May be a good suggestion for the finishing pointing, though. Thanks.

I saw on another channel (Martijn Doolard) that there exists a machine that pumps the lime into the cracks. If you check out his stone oven whole build that was recently published you will see the machine and how he uses it. Good luck on your project

@@theirishhomestead ... Yes Martijn house (one of two) is high in the mountains near Turin... The stones are flat and wide indicative of the area... no granite Even has the traditional stone roofs... So the cavities were mostly narrow and not so deep... Watch Raising Voyagers... a family with a stone house in Italy ... They're building an extra room and shaping the rocks they need... Also the old building has particular sub floor and draining requirements before the final floor... could be interesting! Cheers!

Toby needs time to gain trust. The behaviour patterns take time to alter. Gelding is the best plan, esp. if the plan is to introduce another. I loved that Nell was laying watching as the chickens wandered down the drive...herding in the wrong direction! So, take a deep breath, shoulders back, chin up....all will work out. Oh, no, I’m sorry to hear that, despite your best efforts, life is still throwing you curve balls. As you know already, I’m very familiar with that. I hope and pray Sam will be able to return soon and things can continue. Let me know if there’s anything useful I can do. I’m thrilled that you’re using an understandable mix, for your mortar. People keep smiling, winking, telling me I know myself, muttering about horse hair and other things added to the mix, to make it workable. Yes there are so many opinions on lime. We have decided to just go for it with the mix Sam mentioned. It seems to be working well so far and definitely easier to apply with your hands. Just go with your gut and get stuck in. 👍 I'll tell Sam. Thanks.

A few people have suggested one. It's no good at this point as we add aggregate to the lime mix so won't flow through. It may work for the smoother finishing pointing though. Thanks for the suggestion. 👍
