This is a stressful endeavor. It reminds me of how brides get so stressed they don’t enjoy the process. It’s like being pregnant and not enjoying the process. To help look at things as a blessing and enjoying the process I always try to remind myself, some people can’t find a mate to marry, some people can’t have children and some folks (like me) would love this mess to bring this home back to a traditional land and home in Ireland!! I pray you’ll find the peace of having a place in the Ireland country side even when it’s overwhelming half the joy is in the journey and you have beautiful plans to keep it beautiful and traditional! Those fields will be right back again next spring, no worries. The grass will come right back. You're not destroying the ecosystem at all. You're only stirring it up, which makes some of the wildlife quite happy. You have to maintain the health of the buildings in order to be there.

Congratulations on your new home, you should be so proud of what you are building and be able to hand over to your children and then the grandchildren. I have project managed a large number of homes in Scotland and Ireland so know where you are probably in terms of panic as to what you are doing. When I say to clients about field drains and getting the core draining done and why it is important, I tell them think of all that stones and lime acts as a massive sponge and no matter what pointing you do the walls will not dry whilst there is 100's of gallons of water in the soil around the property. One consideration for the concrete water tank would be to utilise as a foundation for a rain harvesting tank to provide your grey water or non potable water - working with lime is a massive consumer of water and thankfully Ireland typically you will be able to collect 1000's of litres from the roofs year on year. Enjoy the journey.

We plan on re-sealing it and creating a log store between the barn and water tank, which will then have a replacement corrugated roof from the good bits we saved. @@theirishhomestead Willows do well in clay, sandy or loamy soil as long as it's wet enough. I don't think you'll have any problems growing willows. As a side note, willow branches can be put in with anything you are trying to root in a cup of water and whatever you are trying to grow will grow roots. Also I take branches off willow trees and just stick them in the soil with no prep or digging and they become trees. lol Willow is lovely and incredibly easy.

Wow great progress 👏. Love the old bits and bobs . Reminds me of my grand parents old farm. They had a no electricity and no motorised machinery . All horse powered. But of course they modernised over the years . But kept a lot of the old stuff. That cattle crush will be a tough one to get removed looks like it is well stuck in. Dont worry about the land . Jason, the cattle crushes are out!! The digger guy did us a service and got them out! I'm still finding bits and bobs for out curiosity cabinet! Duck pond is dug! Please level the ground around the house to the fence line. Yes it is a necessary evil. But in the long run it will be better! And when out walking you will not find the unexpected whole in the ground and break an ankle. You can line paths with the pulled up stones from the area, and put gravel down between them that you can lead down to your pond. When life gives you lemons make a beautiful lemon pie.

I wouldn't worry too much about stripping everything back. Everything will be back come Spring. The one thing you can depend on is that, in Ireland, everything grows back very quickly! Six months from now you won't see the bare earth.

We just used a digger to clear it and make drainage channels. There is still lots to do with drainage yet.

Throw some hay over the areas that are all dirt so that you aren’t left with all mud. You can even throw it over the seed you lay so that the birds don’t eat the seed. At least you will be able to see all of the promises of what is to come instead of all of the bare dirt/ mud. All new homes start out like that and turn into a thing of beauty. I moved into a home that was less that 800 sq ft. And the property was more than 3000 sq ft. . I had nothing but grass and have been turning it into an English garden over 3 years. It is coming along with each year. It just takes time.

Also, we had our land round the house cleared nearly 5 years ago and I felt very similar, but it recovered so quickly.

yes, they can make it a mud bath fairly quickly. If you can rotate where they are (we use electric netting on the field) or have only a few and a fairly large area, that may be ok. They dig their beaks into the ground.@@theirishhomestead

Tackle the drainage first guys or you'll be plagued with a damp wet site. French drains on all sides...use all those stones you dug up!

Hi, unfortunately, although some drainage channels were put in, we didn't have the funds to do it properly. We are lucky, though, that bring on a hill the house is very dry inside, and the work we did manage to do has been a god send!

I know you will.loads of opinions anout your renovation but for your pointing and rendering please research lime pointing. These old building were usually built without foundations. Lime will allow the building to breath.

I wouldn’t put a pond in especially on level ground. Irish law dictates that water can follow water and would mean all your neighbours could legally trench into it and with Ireland having around 250 days of torrential rain could leave you with a real headache, best wishes

It’s lovely to dream but as an Irish farmer be really wary of goats. Firstly they’re escape artists. Secondly they’ll eat hedges, flowers or anything else they fancy. In short they’re the best way ever, to fall out with your neighbours.

Be careful about leaving trees close to your proposed house. They might look nice but remember they have just grown there by neglect. Their leaves will block your gutters and cover your paths for years to come.

I would put plants and flowers in that feed trough. Rubber and metal maker better troughs. Much easier to flip over and wash out than that concrete one. I love to have that trough at my house here in America. Can’t find them. Eventually place the trough by your kitchen door for herbs if you want for just flowers. I’d love to have that problem.
