Wow that last tid bit of information was something. I've only ported one saw my 350, and I assumed that the top of the piston would clear the transfer at BDC. Well we all know what "assume" means. Thanks again.

Thus is SO cool to see. My dad did some race porting on our bikes, but I was too young to comprehend some of the things he was working with....I will be following this very closely. If I can find a piston for the Montgomery Ward 4.0 saw I have, I really might attempt to port it and make it go....like a beast. Thanks Harvey !
@customcutter1003 жыл бұрын
Exhaust opened at 100*, and the transfers were at 125*, so it's 25* of blow down. not the 15* that you mentioned in the video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, excellent video series.

hey harv, watching pt 2 of the build and saw the part about the taper on the side of the piston i have only seen one other person do that in my 54yrs and he was doing it to the old school 2 stroke bikes back in the day, never thought i would see that again love it!!!

Yup, saw my Dad do this to our stroker bikes as well....gosh they would scream.

It’s common old chilton motorcycle repair manuals use to teach it . That way its reversible with a piston instead of more permanent on the cylinder like skirt cutting.

I just ordered a degree wheel, just like yours - the blue Motion Pro one. Now I can see why a certain saw does not behave, like all of my other saws. To make that adapter to screw on the crank all you need is a piece of aluminum round stock and a 8 by 1.0mm tap. Just drill through a piece of aluminum round stock with a pass drill and tap it out to 8 by 1.0 and screw it on and use a short 8 by 1.0 bolt to hold it on to the degree wheel. I think a 5/16 drill should work fine but I will need to check my drill card to be sure.

Hi Harvey ! One suggestion when checking squish ; put a pc of solder at 12, 9,6 and 3 o’clock (use grease to adhere to piston ; put the cylinder back on and torque , pull over ; remove cylinder and check each pc .... I’ve had cylinders that were off .003-008 out of square - casting/machining flaws .... if you measured .020 in only one quadrant and the other side was off .008 then you would only have .012 squish which wood exceed the mechanical limit
@theironhorse66005 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your input! However I am paranoid of dropping a piece of metal down the transfers! And will check all four quadrants if I see a variance! And you can’t average the numbers! Always pick your lowest number for your squish! That’s where your Piston will hit first! I hope this response don’t offend you but I try to eliminate anything going wrong! I’m old and set in my ways! Haha! I love seeing you in the comments so please forgive me if I have made an offense! I always want to see your take on the situation! Thanks man!

Ironhorse Chainsaw No problem at all Harvey ... doesn’t seem like the cylinders manufactured today (both oem and aftermarket) are made to the same tolerances that they were years ago ... out of square , out of round , tapered etc ... that’s why I’m not a big fan of “machining” the base on a mandrel .... I’m a machinist/ cutter grinder by trade and you wouldn’t believe how out of whack cylinders I’ve seen on some “others” builds - I agree you’re better off running a thinner gasket ... if you machine the base on a lathe using a mandrel and piston to cylinder wall clearance isn’t in spec you’re gonna have a very unhappy customer in short order
@phogelbice5 жыл бұрын
@@fabzacres-blackcat How would using a mandrel to machine the base be a bad idea, what would be a better way and why. Im just interested, I machined 5-6 cylinders at work using a very tight mandrel, now I'm a repair guy not a real machinist so bear with me. ;)
@fabzacres-blackcat5 жыл бұрын
Gürwald depends on skill of machinist and equipment used ... why not just use a thinner base gasket to get the squish or quench you desire ? Or none at all with sealer like Harvey does on this 390 build ? I will tell ya right now tighter squish (than stock)= More compression / more power but more HEAT and more stress on lower end - coupled with adv timing = FAR less longevity imho ; they also won’t rev as high .... are we building a logging / work Saw or a racer ?

I looked up the pass drill for an 8 b1.0mm and it is 17/64, which means a slightly loose 1/4 inch hole. I could file it a little bigger with a 13/64 chainsaw file which I have but I think 1/4 inch drill will do fine tapping aluminum round stock. If I was tapping out steel thin I might have to be a little closer in my dimension but not aluminum. I am going to tap the round stock all the way through, after drilling the pass through hole. Just chuck it up in a vise and drill it. I may drill from both ends to make sure my hole is as centered as possible. I will center punch both ends and center drill a small hole n each end and then drill it with my 1/4” drill half way through from one end and then drill the other end. That will ensure my hole is pretty well centered because freehand holes are not perfect. If I had a lathe I could center drill it pretty perfectly.

Mr Harvey I live in Dallas,Tx and I have a 2001 Husqvarna 3120K cutoff saw with the muffler that has the round open port exhaust tip and I want to have this muffler ported. Either a bigger round tip like the ones you put on your saws or a 2nd round tip on the starter side. Are you able to do this for me if I ship the muffler to you? Thanks in advance.

Harvey I had a crazy idea come to me and I thought you would be the guy to tell it to.... Is it a crazy idea to put a scavenging pump on the exhaust along with a rotary valve between the scavenging pump and the head... I don't know if that's how the two stroke Detroit diesels work or not I've never delved into them ( but I will ).....the only problem I see is you would have to have a cylinder head with the exhaust port coming out the side over the PTO end so that the pump could be driven off the crankshaft in conjunction with the rotary valve
@NMX7774 жыл бұрын
I have another idea this one is much easier but I don't know if it would be effective or not if you put some type of small fins on the crank weights to create some type of a forced air flow around the crank to direct the air toward the transfer ports.
@NMX7774 жыл бұрын
I guess it would probably be better just to utilize a turbocharger on the intake side..
