What it makes me think of is what you're get if you raised a child, teaching that child that they can never, _ever_ be wrong. What you'll result in, is a child who is wrong about _many_ things, because they've been raised to value their own truth in every possible matter over anyone or anything else, regardless of what they see and experience. Why would they try to learn new things, when they believe their truth is already superior, that they already _know_ everything they need to know? Jay is that child, only in this case it's what he's been taught about unconditional love. As a result, just like the child who believes they have 100% of the truth, knowing better than everyone else, Jay believes he knows and understands love better than everyone else. And just like with the child, the ironic part is that he ends up knowing _less_ about love than most other people, specifically because he wasn't taught to consider that _he could be wrong._ Those who aren't willing to consider that they may be wrong are most often the ones who end up _being_ wrong.

@JoyfulArtist212 жыл бұрын
When you're that deep in the belief, it's hard to see the abuse. One of the many layers of me coming out of Christianity was learning about narcissism, manipulation, toxic behavior, and other red flags of an abusive relationship. I realized then just how similar the God of the Bible fit that description. Now that I no longer believe, it's easy to point out the abusive nature of the Gospel. But there are so many still in it who can't see it that way. They twist what "love" means and think God loves them simply because the Bible says so. They will literally turn this into a mantra sometimes. At the church I attended for roughly 20 years, they always loved to repeat "God is good all the time" and "Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so." You tell it to yourself and hear it enough times, you believe it whole heartily.

@@chrisclark784 They really don't. And they don't seem to understand how it comes across. There's a verse I was taught all the time growing up. "Speak the truth in love." I saw it with this caller, that same mentality. Though, granted, they have a very twisted idea of what love is. It's why they don't see a problem with telling us we are going to hell. My own mom does this, and I know she legit loves me. To them, they see it as the most loving thing to do. They compare it to coming to warn you your house is on fire. They think they're trying to save your soul. But... the analogy is more accurately like someone coming to tell you your house is on fire when there's no smoke, no fire, and no evidence that there ever was a fire. So, sure. It would be loving and brave to try and rescue someone from a fire. But if you are just yelling at someone when their house isn't on fire and can't demonstrate that we actually are in any kind of danger, then it's just annoying.

Ya know, I tried to embody "unconditional love" as an 18 year old atheist hanging onto some woo-woo-wiccan "spirituality~" after my incomplete deconstruction of my family's religion. The envisioned process was that I would take in all the so-called negativity from the world around me & radiate life & love back out. This doesn't work, not even in its own metaphor. Or just makes me a walking doormat who refused to set boundaries or advocate for myself; denying & repressing the hurt & my reactions. Unconditional love is a nonsensical, childish concept. Even accounting for "tough love" or the love of a parent for their child. It's not unconditional. A parent doesn't love every child on the planet as they love their own. Their love is conditional on the parent-child dynamic. Conditional to their conceptual proximity to the child; the child being "theirs".

I am part of a continuous development, an ever growing complexity in some places while other places get ever simpler (i.e. the voids between stars and galaxies), from particles forming, galaxies forming, life coming into existence. We are the most complex structure we know of in the universe, but just one step in a seemingly endless ladder, that what comes after us so great we can only speculate about. So I can be humble AND proud at the same time, can accept others have the same rights as me. Can accept that sh*t just happens, that it makes no sense to despair about things that you cannot change, can concentrate on the things I can change. Wow, Jay, one of the really disrespectful callers that likes to call in wants to whine about name calling when he's very disrespectful and straight out basically said he had zero respect for you guys, and yet he's whining that you pointed out his hypocrisy.

I feel sorry for Jay, it must be hard to have close and good social relations, when you are like that. That must be frustrating, and life must be really really hard, especially when you can't accept that you yourself might be the problem og at least part of the problem. I also feel for the People around him/Jesus loves you.

Actually, I think Matt Dillahunty has a good, concise answer to Jay's final question of what that evidence would be; and that is, god is supposed to know everything about us, so he should know exactly what kind of evidence would convince each of us. If god really wanted us to believe, he would make sure we found whatever evidence he knew would convince us. But V honestly looked for years, and seems to have done a lot more searching and investigating than Jay ever did, but "god" never presented the evidence to her.

You calmly and rationally lead me to understand how my behaviour makes me look like a condescending asshole. WHY DO YOU HAVE TO INSULT ME! THAT'S WHY YOU'RE ANGRY A/... So funny XD

"Truth hurts" 1. Truth does not necessarilly have to hurt. Truth & pain aren't mutually exclusive. 2. What you said is not true. Non believers can easily experience love.

So we need an imaginary friend in order to love real people?🤦🏿♂️

This discussion comes across like someone claiming that secular individuals haven't and can never _truly_ experience _real_ fear if they don't believe in ghosts. That ghosts are the _only_ truest source of unfiltered fear one could ever feel. This all, of course, being based on the premise of 'I was personally really scared one time by what I'm claiming to have been a ghost and I've decided I can't be wrong on my assumptions based on those feelings'. It's a shame that I don't think Jay is in a mindspace to understand the problems with that line of reasoning.

If god's love is unconditional then what difference does it make if I believe or not?

It amazes me how quickly people like J get offended when they get called out on their bullshit. While they feel like they can say what they want with zero consequences

I tend to take theists for their word about their belief in gawd, but the condescension in this one leaves no room for doubt! JFC!!

Thank you! Some of these things are just ridiculous 🙄 that these people think. Like they think people are not people but are evil if they don't think the same as them. But so many people that are the same religion as them also do NOT think the EXACT same as them 🤔 😕

Saying atheists can’t experience love without god is like saying Christian’s can’t experience sex without foreskins.

Question for Jay... Do you need to DO something to receive this "forgiveness" that you are using to show God's "unconditional love"? Because if the answer is YES in any way.... Then it's not unconditional, is it....

If Jesus would be unconditional love, then there would be no requirement to to follow Jesus to be saved. And Jay seemed to say unconditional love from the beginning, it still misrepresent his deity, since the bible never says it is unconditional love that we get from that deity for it is very clear that if you do not love Jesus then you will also not receive love, that is the very definition of conditional love! If the love would be unconditional then it wouldn't matter what people believe or do, they all would experience the unconditional love.
