I so agree with the point that sometimes watching a movie adaptation can help you understand the book better - it’s exactly what happened to me with Pride and Prejudice. Watching the movie and brushing shoulders with the fandom really helped me appreciate the book in a way that I couldn’t before!

I had to read a book for university and I loved it so much. I loved the way it portrayed mental health and impossible love. It felt like the story came right out of my head.... then I went to Uni to discuss the book in my course and omg they all hated it 😭 not even just that they hated the protagonist and called him stupid and they said he should get a life??? Excuse me? I felt personally attacked because he was just like me: desperate and sad 😂😂😭 really got called out by the whole class

Wow I can only imagine how bad you felt! I wonder if an explanation to people disliking such a protagonist is that he/she reminded them of their fear to be desperate and sad? At least I would guess that they either could not relate or felt uncomfortable to be confronted with how the character was suffering, even though they would maybe have more empathy if a person in their real life had depression or something similar.

Haven't read many of these, but I genuinely loved Emma. The whole point is that she's a meddlesome shrew and all her machinations come to naught and everyone's much the happier for it, including her. The whole point is getting over oneself.

Piranesi transformed me from a strictly high fantasy, dragons and gargoyles girly into someone who gives most books a chance. The twist in this book and the last few chapters filled me with such curiosity that I couldnt stop turning the pages

In addition to being extremely challenging to read, 1984 deals with a very difficult subject. Although I purchased the book, I ultimately listened to it. Despite the book's subject, the girl who read it had such a soft, angelic voice that it turned out to be a passable read. The subject matter is extremely difficult, particularly for me as I reside in Romania, a country where communism was rife and these events were real and widespread. Though I was fortunate enough to be born when it was coming to an end, reading this book felt a lot like reading a history book because I knew the stories from my parents and grandparents. Finally, I would say that this is a book that I highly recommend listening to on audio and having a soft-spoken reader. The book is difficult enough. The reader does not have to speak in a dramatic manner because doing so could make you feel down afterwards.

When I first read Piranesi, I gave up after about 40 pages, not able to get into it and to stick with the story. After abandoning it for 2 years, I picked it up again, restarted, and didn't put it back down until i finished it. I'm glad I didn't review it the first time around and gave it a second chance - I absolutely adored it on the second read. Just had to be in the right mood for it!

I am also quite fond of The Picture of Dorian Gray and Emma is my ultimate Jane Austen favorite so that was a treat. Sally Rooney is definitely a love it or hate it author. I believe in reading a few books to give the author a chance and I disliked all of them, and Normal People was my least favourite of them all. A good friend of mine, whose opinion on books I absolutely respect, adores her writing. I’m glad you found a cheap copy of the book and it would be interesting to see which side of the coin you fall to with her writing. Happy reading!

I love your videos and your personality ❤ please remember that goodreads is also used by spanish speakers and a lot of us read books originally written in english, it may be a non ironic "No me gustó" 😅. Another thing if you liked Emma I think you may enjoy Iphigenia from the venezuelan writer Teresa de la Parra, the full title of the book is: Iphigenia (the diary of a young lady that wrote because she was bored) it's not for everyone and I don't know how it translates to english but I love it and the protagonist gives me Emma vibes, the themes are different though.

I honestly think that people finding classics boring is a symptom of our collective short attention span (social media, phones in general…). We are soo used to fast developing story lines and 1000 ”plot twists“ that it’s harder to just enjoy a beautifully written book for what it is. And I really struggle with this too sometimes! It’s probably just a matter of practice and taking your time ☺️

What did I learn watching this video? That me and Jack have opposite taste in books. Anyway, in defense of my 1 star reviews: • Piranesi: it gave me anxiety, which I do NOT need right now in my life :') • no matter what I do, but I physically cannot read The Picture of Dorian Grey. I tried 100 times, I cannot. Probably dye to the fact that teachers in middle school forced it to me for YEARS, when I only wanted to read silly preteen books. Now I'm a huge classic book nerd, but The Pucture Of Dorian Grey is just: no. • I have a problem with Jane Austen books in general, I simply don't like her writing, but I love her stories (P&P is one of my fav movies) • I didn't read 1989 yet but I'm sincerely afraid now. Despite this, I will continue to binge Jack's videos anyway :')

I know people have individual tastes but I will agree with all the critique about Normal People because of the rage I heard about it and when I read it with that high expectations, it was just 200 pages of waiting for something to happen. As one of the readers summed it, "I've read shampoo bottles with more plot twists."

Such a waste of time (Normal People) Meh(disappointing) not worth the hype at all Read it and just can't relate to the protagonist, both The male and female lead are completely lost of track and doesn't even know what to do and what is better. They love each other from the start but still making love with other people and informing each other ,I mean what kind of love is that? Well then if these is the love story then sorry I have other definition of love stories . Don't know why they call it the future classic? And there is no continuity between it's chapter, it's been interrelated and mixed a lot And it doesn't feel like a complete. Chapter should have been written in a correlation and with the storyline, the only good thing about the book is the way of writing, it's good like really good a simple and beautiful writing to fall in love with . If the story, chapter, character, and their bond would have been better these book would have been great. 🌟(1/5)

people critisising 1984 ( which is my fav ) just made me so mad. its such a window into the dystopia that our world is turning into and its beyond me how people disregard it and call it boring. in my opinion, it just proved the point of the book.
