What's even more crazy is that, to New Order, it was just a song. They didn't think much of it. Even their label didn't think it would sell much. It also lost the label money to print the sleeve. They lost 5p per print because it was so expensive.

Re: Your theory - The lead singer of Joy Division Ian Curtis suffered from increasingly severe epileptic fits and spiralling depression relating to that and his marriage breaking down and on the eve of them leaving for a US Tour hung himself in his kitchen. The next day the bassist Peter Hook was eating Sunday Dinner and got a phone call telling him the details, he proceeded to return to his food eating normally and his wife asked him who it was and he told her that Ian had killed himself- she was shocked particularly as Peter kepr on eating as if nothing had happened - as he said later he was numb and it didn't even really register and he never really dealt with it at the time. The three remaining members continued on as New Order with the addition of the Drummer Stephen Morris's girlfriend (later wife) Gillian. A lot of their earlier stuff like this seems to deal with the inner turmoil Ian's death caused them so your theory probably isn't a million miles from the truth Barney's lyrics seem to indicate sadness and a feeling of loss and a lyric like "How does it feel when your heart grows cold" could be interpreted as someone rejecting you or someone dying whilst a lyric like "If it wasn't for your misfortune I'd be a heavenly person today" can be read as either a happier person or dead too if Ian hadn't died. Their is an inherent darkness in the lyrics that speaks to feelngs of loss but also of moving on from that loss hich is what the band did.

@@aguacan - I wouldn't really expect any - it's kind of self evident stuff and they have all spoken about how deeply Ian's death changed them. Barney once said that he writes lyrics that dont always mean anything but sound and feel right to him and that after Ian's death he was writing lyrics that sounded to him like what Ian would write because thats what sounded right to him. This was written a an instrumental and it was Rob Gretton who said it sounded to good and needed lyrics and Barney just cobbled together some stuff and given the time it was written it's kind of easy to see the mix of sorrow and the wanting to let go in the lyrics.

New Order, Depeche Mode, Erasure, they gave us some of the most jammin, danceable tunes of our day. This was a huge club hit as you might imagine, but they all tended to have very dark lyrics. Emo dance music. 😅 I had to laugh because your face 10 seconds in was like..ok, I might like this...then your shoulders took over and the smile came over your face and the rest is history. ☺

There is a huge back story to this. New Order grew out of the remains of a band called Joy Division, who were immensely Influential, but only put out a couple of albums. Joy Division's lead singer committed suicide, and the rest of the band became New Order. No band previously had ever survived the death of their lead singer, so their record label expected this song to only sell a small number of copies. Because of this, they decided to made the record cover lavish and expensive to produce. The song became one of Britain's biggest selling singles of all time, and the company very nearly went bankrupt as a result. There's a fun movie called "24 hour party people" which deals with the chaos around their label and its eccentric manager. You should try listening to some Joy Division songs too - "She's lost control", "Transmission", and "Love will tear us apart" are three great tracks of theirs.

For real. "Blue Monday" was released three years after Ians death. New Order released a lot of music in between. Savilles fascination for the floppy disc, and the very "special" organisation around Factory Records was the sole reason that the original sleeve saw the light of day There´s no connection..

No need to be such a snobbish jerk about it.🤦‍♀️ I'm not saying the song is bad, is an awesome song. Have you heard the lyrics? I found this analysis that I think is quite accurate: "The narrator ponders on the maltreatment he constantly receives from someone he trusted. The character in the song appears to be very manipulative and influences the narrator’s emotions negatively. However, the narrator does not have enough control to do away with him. He finds it hard to believe that this person turned out to be a bad influence on him due to the trust and love that blind him. He makes an effort to get solitude but his oppressor does not grant it. The writer finally admits that this person is simply cold-hearted and has no empathy for him. This song’s lyrics mainly talk about the challenge of dealing with a manipulative person/behavior one has become attached to. The singer may have been referring to a devious lover, an abusive person, or a drug habit he did not have control over." So clearly the poor guy is feeling miserable. And we, as listeners, just hit the dance floor to bust moves while listening to his heartbreak, which also makes us quite cold-hearted... That's what I meant when I say "we all loved dancing to his misery".

I loved your reaction especially when you said this went left. Those dark lyrics seemed to have gotten to you. This band was formed by the remaining members of Joy Division and if you understood Joy Division, it might make sense to you why the lyrics became "dark." My favorite Joy Division album is "Closer." If you listened to that, you'd get who they were. By the late '80s, they had largely removed themselves from the darker lyrics and dark overtones in their music.

New Order's lyrics continued a trend set by their original lyricist and singer, Ian Curtis, in which the lyrics are open to interpretation, but interwoven with introspection and pain throughout. The line: "I see a ship in the harbour... If it wasn't for your misfortune I'd be a heavenly person today", could be seen as a direct reference to the tragedy of Curtis. The title "Blue Monday" is often overlooked. On Monday 19th May 1980 the band (then Joy Division) were to fly out to begin their American tour, but Ian Curtis committed suicide the previous day.

After hearing Blue Monday, Kraftwerk asked New Order - how did you make those sounds? That's how original and influential this record was. Broke the mould and literally created modern dance music as we know it. :)

Kraftwerk inspired many acts from other styles and genres. David Bowie's "V-2 Schneider", from the 1977's Heroes album, was a tribute to Florian Schneider.[88] Post-punk bands Joy Division and New Order were heavily influenced by the band. Wrong way round. Kraftwerk were way before New order.

Congratulations on hearing one of the most classic and influential songs from the UK - GREAT REACTION! 👏👏👏 Blue Monday is probably one of the most sampled tracks ever due to it's new and infectious beat - that's still applies today. The lead singer, Ian Curtis, committed suicide by hanging.....he was only 23 years old. He had severe epilepsy, and would often have seizures on stage. People thought he was 'dancing' cos he was still standing up. As the fits worsened he made the decision that life was too hard for him to carry on. Tragic. But he left an OUTSTANDING legacy with this track - one of a kind. R.I.P. Ian Curtis🖤 (There's a film about his life called 'Control')

Part of the attraction to New Order for me is the happy go lucky music, with thoughtful, thought provoking or even dark elements in the lyrics themselves. This was a continuation of their previous successful band Joy Division’s legacy. With this band, they vastly expanded their experimentation with music and sound to greater success for a second time. When released, this record set the dance floors alight. Whereas people would always be sitting it out on a dance track, whenever this got played everybody got up to fill the dance floor! Then when listening on the radio, the lyrics are at the forefront. So they nailed it in both areas. I enjoy following other bands that have strident uplifting melodies, juxtaposed with that similar tone of thoughtful vocals, such as Elbow and Arcade Fire.

This was a trailblazer of a song. I bought the 12" single at Licorice Pizza in the Norwalk (CA) Square when I was 17. I bought it randomly bc the album cover was made to look like a floppy disk. I had never heard the song b4. It hadn't even been played on KROQ OR KNAC. And I was blown the fiddlestick away!! Still holds up. Even the recent cover of it is EXCELLENT!

This song came out in 1987 when I was in grade 8. You are LITERALLY the only person I've ever seen have the right reaction to it the first time. It's such a treat watching you really get it. It's believed to be about child abuse, or addressing the abuser now as an adult.

I must say your reaction to this song is one of the best I have seen so far. At the beginning of the song you were clearly caught in the music and you were enjoying it but as soon as you realized the contents of the lyrics your demeanor changed completely. For me, that demonstrates how empathetic and receptive you are to both music and message.

I recommend the tracks Everything's Gone Green, Chosen Time, Procession and Cries & Whispers. They're from the early part of their career, shortly after the transition from Joy Division to New Order. You can really hear both bands in these tracks.

Oooh! Another joyful reaction to this song! Yeah, this song was influenced by Kraftwerk, Donna Summer, Giorgio Moroder and New York disco music. It was released in 1983. In 1988, Quincy Jones would remix this as "Blue Monday 1988" with samples from another New Order track, "Confusion".

One of the most influential bands to come out of the 80s,and "Blue Monday" was the biggest selling 12" of all time,and easy to see why. Peter Hooks bass line was based on Ennio Morricones old spaghetti western themes.

They wrote this song in a loop so they wouldn't have to do an encore. Fans were getting mad because they never did encores so they thought if they wrote a diddy and looped it they could go off and party and leave people with an electronic "encore" of sorts. Of course it turned out to be one of their biggest songs. New Order was the first concert I ever saw with a band called Love and Rockets.

My recommendation with new wave and electronica and alternative music: don't get caught up on the lyrics. Think of the voice as just another instrument. I've been loving New Order since I was 14 (and I'm almost 50) and I have no idea what the lyrics are in a single one of their songs LOL It's just part of the music.

One of few great songs by New Order, many similar to New Order that i enjoy like Erasure, Pet Shop boys. Feeling that olive green, not common which reminds me of an artist popular in the 80's era with different hair colors, Cyndi Lauper... Some great music by her, but should react to her wild live performance music video Money Changes Everything, Cyndi Rocks that performance. 80's was full of unique artists. More 80's music!!!
