Traveling from DC to NY by rail always makes sense to me. The best thing about Amtrak is you get on and get off. Rarely any shenanigans.

Very informative video. One suggestion: upgrade your music, dude, especially if you call yourself "thejazzguy." That said, I'm planning a trip from Stamford, CT, to DC in order to visit the National Gallery -- which I've never visited. It's free and does NOT require masks (which are completely useless, btw). I originally planned to fly, but the idea of having to take off my shoes (even for 1st class passengers) and be scanned by TSA is so controlling and repellent to me, I have decided to train it. Waiting for the new Acela trains to come online. The only way I'm ever going to fly anywhere is by private jet, LOL.

There are also plenty of regional Amtrak lines throughout the US too that don't take days/long distance routes. The Pacific Surliner and routes out of Chicago (like to Milwaukee and Detroit) are examples of more local routes. Not always faster than flying (once factoring in TSA/drives to airports) but can be great alternatives than driving (and those flight routes are expensive).

Full distance plane is best, either “half” NE regional is perfectly fine, Acela is only with a good discount or a business trip on NYC to DC. Thanks again for mixing up your reviews
@raeonardobak Жыл бұрын
I had a good look thanks. In order for Acela to run faster than it is now, the Northeast Main Line needs to be speeded up, but the answer is to build a dedicated high-speed train line between Washington DC-New York-Providence.(When upgrading existing railroads, there must be absolutely no railroad crossings in all areas.) If you have to make it underground inevitably along the existing route along the beach, you have to boldly make it an underground route. In addition, the routes are extended to Ottawa-Scranton-Maryland-Washington D.C., Providence-Portland-Bangor-Holton, and Washington D.C-Richmond-Goldsboro-Wilton. . Washington D.C-Charlotte-Atlanta-New Orleans-Galveston-Corpus Christi-Mexico City-Acapulco I hope that the high-speed rail will be built to make Washington D.C-Mexico City faster and closer. For the success of the high-speed rail construction in the USA!

If you take this route again, you'll want to try First class. First class seats are larger than in Business on Acela. (2 & 1 seating, instead of 2 &2...contrary to what you were told). Also, the meals are frequent. My experience on Acela F Class was pre-COVID, so it may be different now; But I took it the whole route. Besides the appetizers, there was a choice of 3 meals. I had all three because they serve between DCA-PHL, again between PHL-NYC & the third time a bit after leaving NYC. They definitely took care of you (again, pre-COVID).

DC to Boston is a little tough by train but I think Philly to Boston is reasonable if you live closer to downtown than near the airport. Having to travel out to the airport and deal with traffic plus you need to get to the airport early. Easier to roll up to the train station and walk on board. And though both planes and trains can have delays, only planes are delayed by bad weather.

@nickfoley202 I believe first-class passengers are "stuck" in the 1st class car. So no cafe car access. You do get a real meal and drinks served to you. So a moving resturant in a way. I would miss being able to walk around though. Most people are not taking long trips so I guess it doesn't matter much. NY DC travel is most common and is under 3 hrs. NY to Bos is a longer but not terrible. However very few 1st class passengers are going the whole Bos to DC route.

I actually disagree: rail travel makes sense in the US. Rail struggling has less to do with "population density" (although that is a factor, it can be mitigated and/or solved) and more to do with the automotive lobby. Not only that, but expanding rail makes sense too, given our cost of living crisis: cars put a cost burden in several different ways (car loans, repair/maintenence costs, insurance, gas, all of which are worth several times more than income deducted via taxes) and airlines are expensive. Rails are a good option for people to get around without needing a flight, and theres ways of funding it without increasing income taxes. On top of that, there is demand for it, and demand that is growing. Cities are likely going to reverse single-family zoning policies in the coming decades to increase taxable revenue per unit of land (Minneapolis did this a few years ago) and likely subsidize real estate projects to build multi-family housing and more mixed zoning in the future. This increases density, and thus makes rail not just more feasible (it's always feasible) but necessary. The only way these wont come to pass is if the current political establishment (both democrats and republicans, this isnt a partisan issue) continues to cave to automotive lobbies, oil lobbies, real estate lobbies, and airline lobbies to continue building in ways that are unsustainable.
@metanostalgia Жыл бұрын
This isn't even mentioning the elephant in the room: the fact our railways are privately owned and dominated by 4 major companies who don't invest in their own infrastructure is the main problem. They give freight trains priority on tracks shared with Amtrak (making Amtrak trips longer), and as we've seen with recent scandalous derailments, have definitively proven themselves incapable of managing themselves. They prioritize profits over services (almost like it was a mistake to allow America's most crucial infrastructure to be privatized). The moderate solution would be to force those companies to invest in expanding their own infrastructure, limiting freight-priority, and set minimum staff requirements so companies like Norfolk don't try to get away with record profits by cutting staff in half, to the detriment of their own services, infrastructure, and America as a whole. The more radical and beneficial solution would be to nationalize the railways, just in the same vain that the interstate-highways are nationalized. A lot of people won't like that idea, but a lot of people also don't understand how budgeting works, and think "nationalizing = more money out of MY wallet" as if that's the only way to pay for things/as if they wont benefit from it.

I took it from DC to Philadelphia and time wise it was roughly the same. Comfort, not much difference. The majority of the amenities you get with Acela, you also get with the Northeast Regional. Also The Acelas are very very worn by now and honestly it's not worth the extra 100 bucks for a ticket. It's a cool and awesome train for sure but being practical it's not worth it
