The latest massacres in Bucha and Mariupol have shown that Vladimir Putin has no regard for human life - he only cares about power and money. In Putin’s eyes, money is power, and vice versa. That’s why freezing the assets of Russians tied to Putin’s regime is so important.
Between 1996 and 2005, American investor Bill Browder ran the largest foreign investment firm in Russia, until he was declared ‘a threat to Russian national security’ and got kicked out of the country. Browder has spent the last 14 years trying to understand the dark money flowing out of Russia.
In 'Freezing Order' - translated into Dutch as Achtervolgd door de staatsmaffia for publisher Atlas Contact - Browder tells the story of his quest to establish a global regime for imposing sanctions on Russians involved in corruption and criminality. This global regime came with the realization of the Magnitsky Act, named after Browder’s lawyer Sergei Magnitsky who was arrested, tortured, and died in Russian police custody.

Just finished the book. Very well written and it gives an interesting view in to what all the fuss was about, when fx. Danske Bank was knee deep into the russian money laundering schemes. Not surprised, just shocked by the amount and the complexity of it all. Highly recommended read I think.

Great book but definitely brought out how the West trusted Russia too much. Unfortunately profit from investments in countries becomes more important than ethics.

This is the reason why russian opposition cannot come to power.... because there are people like this guy or Kasparov who are completely detached from the reality of russian way of thinking.

Oh gee and I thought it was because they all get jailed, poisoned, killed or exiled and that the Russian way of thinking , is to be fed BS and tremble in fear of ever thinking again.

@@secretdiva9414 say what you want, but when russian people hear that someone is killed that was liberal and pro-western, it's like music to their ears... they hate the west because the west hated them for centauries and the only time when they were ready to open to the west, in the 90s, they were humiliated in every possible way.

@@voxaliqui4279 maybe if their leader hadn’t stolen so much money from the country for 22 years and the Russian people were actually prospering and loving life they wouldn’t be feeling so humiliated. Only Putin and his regime have humiliated the Russian people by wasting and stealing their money and feeding them lies to keep them weak. Russian people are like a mass movement of domestic violence victims. Wealthy ones who accept the poverty inflicted on them by their abuser who lives like a Czar.

I though that opposition can't come to power because they get murdered. But now I see, the only reason Putin is in absolute power for more than 20 years is because he knows the Russian way of thinking
