Some people believe athena blessed her by making her untouchable. Also the image of medusa on buildings in ancient greece was code for safe asylum for women fleeing rape or abuse. The first feminist symbol?
@TheEbonchi3 жыл бұрын
that's the Romanized story that says she did it out of spite. Athena didn't curse her, at least from the gods perspective. Women had to fear catching a mans eye, so she gave medusa a gaze to turn them to stone. And she saw beauty as a curse for women (as being lusted after was one of the worst things for a woman, hence virgin goddess) it was meant to be poetic, not cruel. Plus, in greek mythology snakes are creatures of healing and rebirth, due to their ability to heal from terrible trauma and injuries, and their ability to shed, not evil, filthy or terrifying. (the medical symbol with a snake around a staff comes from ancient greece) The greek gods are well known for going too far and doing things we see as terrible when they're trying to be helpful. The version of the story prior to the romans trying to slander the greek gods had all the same story beats, but with much different intentions.

I don't know there are various versions of the story. There are versions where Perseus was given gifts from the gods instead of the nymphs to kill Medusa, the sword from Zeus, the sandals from Hermes, and the shield from Athena. If Athena wanted to help her by cursing her why would she contribute to helping Perseus kill her? Athena gave him the shield which in turn helped him kill Medusa.

Contrary to what some people think, there is no version where Athena did it protect her. Also, if that were the case, why would she later on send Perseus on a quest to kill her if she actually wanted to protect her?

I feel like her being turned into gorgon was an act of mercy/kindness as she would keep her from ever being taken advantage of in the same way again
