In some versions Persephone was totally aware of the effects of the food from the Underworld and ate it because she had fallen in love with Hades and because she knew Demeter wouldn't let her go back to the Underworld, and that if she was to do so against her mother's will would cause her to reinstate her curse on the plants of the Earth; Persephone and Hades devised the plan so that she would be "forced" to spend time in the Underworld. She absolutely adored her mother and wanted to spend time with her as well, but she needed a binding reason to spend part of her time with her husband too.
@SamiiInsane

This is the version i know.... honestly pains me a bit to hear people believing that Persephone didnt love Hades but had more of a hot headed annoyance with other women trying to fawn over her husband. I know people that worship both Hades and Persephone and its extremely obvious the love that is shared between them. People also need to realize that most of the stories of the Gods and Goddesses are told through a humans perspective.... they need to be heard, read, and felt and people need to try to see the deeper meanings behind those stories.

yes the version that make deimeter look unreasonable and a bitch are certainly more favored then making hades look like some kidnapper. I'm going with the version in which he makes a deal with zues, and tricks her into eating the fruit. its more consistent with how most greek myths involving woman go lol. people glorify him too much just because he's not "as bad" as the other greek gods
@jasmidnurmi9857
@jasmidnurmi9857 3 жыл бұрын
@@madelinemcmillan4020 I am not glorifying him, that's just the version I grew up with. And the fact that it doesn't go the usual route of the women being powerless is a plus. Also Demeter wasn't being a bitch. She was a mother trying to get her child back. As messed up as keeping the ground from baring fruit was, it wasn't to torment the humans.

Fucking thank you! This is the "True" version as far as I know. Hades is the only one who's loyal to his Queen, and truly loves her. It started as a kidnap, and then she fell for him just like Beauty and the Beast lol. And it wasn't one seed. Depending on the myth it's 3 or 4, one for each month she spends in the underworld. The myth I was told is that she WAS tricked to eat the first one, he felt so guilty he told her, and then she ate three more.

So people know, The "Rape" of Persephone wasn't what we think of "rape", now. The myth is also a moral for fathers not to sell off their daughters to narriage without their or their mothers' permission. Mothers didn't get a say so that's why Hades didn't ask permission from Demeter. In Ancient Greek marriages, father's would basically sell/give away their duaghters (like today's walking down the aisle) & the new husband would then give the bride a pomegranate (or sometimes an apple) to symbolise she will now be provided from by the husband, not father. That is why Persephone had the pomegranate. Minthe was a previous lover. Hades didn't cheat.

He didn't tend to exact some horrible vengeance on mortals unlike say Poseidon with the queen of aethopia sending a sea monster to fuck things up just because she bragged that her daughter andromeda was more beautiful than the nerids or athena with arachne who claimed (correctly) that she was a better weaver than her, or aphrodite trying to make the life of psyche a living tartarus just because people (but not psyche herself) stated she was more beautiful than her, I think it would make sense that hades wouldn't bother doing revenge on slights as he could just wait till they died and then it's a case of your ass is mine.

whovianhistorybuff 2345 Well he did force that one dude to push a rock up a hill for eternity but he kidnapped Thanatos so I’d say it was justified Also that’s Ovid’s version of the myth (Arachne) Arachne claimed that she was the better Weaver so Athena took her up on that challenge. Athena wove the myth of her rivalry with Poseidon (competing for the namesake of Athens) and Arachne wove......... porn, essentially. Specifically, porn of Poseidon, Zeus, and other gods.... exploits. That’s like the third worst goddess to weave this images for, cmon Arachne you can do better. Athena knew that this was a bad idea because if Ares or another, much more vengeful god saw, it wouldn’t look good for Arachne. So she hit Arachne over the head with a weaving shovel ....... thing and told her that is was a bad idea. Not that her weaving was bad, that is was a stupid idea to weave porn of people who could smite her in an instant. Arachne hung her self, Athena (feeling guilty) turned her into a spider so she could weave for the rest of her life.

Persephone and Hades are my favorite couple since I was a kid. As a kid my parents told me that my name (Denise) was inspired by Persephone and Hades' gender-shifting child Zagreus/Dionysus, although other accounts say that Dionysus' real dad is Zeus. Also, other accounts state that Hades didn't rape Persephone: he didn't even know that Demeter and Persephone weren't aware of Zeus' decision to wed Persephone to Hades. Hades didn't touch her until they were married, and he didn't marry her until some time of courtship. The pomegranate issue was also consensual because both of them were scared that Demeter wouldn't allow Persephone to come back to the Undetworld to see Hades again. Also, compare to the dysfunctional marriage of Hera and Zeus, and affair-filled marriage of Aphrodite and Hephaestus, the marriage of Hades and Persephone is actually loving and both are very loyal. It sucks that some versions of their love story are very dark and negative. Sorry for the long comment.

Not so much, actually. Helios only survived the Titan wars because he swore to Zeus he would serve as the sun for the rest of time. That’s why there’s two pairs of sun and moon gods in Greek mythology. Apollo and Artemis were responsible for pulling the sun/moon across the sky. Helios literally WAS the sun.

What most retellings of Persephone's (or Kori, which translates to "the Maiden" or "the Daughter", as she was known before Hades renamed her) rape neglect to mention is that Zeus raped his own daughter first - a matter that the oh so protective Demeter never seemed to have a problem with... Imo, both Zeus and Demeter just wanted Persephone for themselves, denied her an identity of her own and then were furious when she ran off with someone willing to crown her queen and treat her like a person. All these stories ever talk about is what Demeter or Zeus want Hades to do, no one ever asks Persephone...
@SwordTune
@SwordTune 3 жыл бұрын
Because Hades is new to this cast of characters while Persephone, Demeter, and Zeus existed hundred of years before in Mycenaean Greece. Later Greeks had to find a way to make Hades fit in with the cool gods. The whole kidnapping is really just an explanation for how the og Dread Queen got her job.

I agree. Hades never raped Kore/Persephone, and though he abducted her he treated her well. Zeus was the only rapist in Greek Mythology. The Zagreus myth of the Orphic Mysteries specifically states that, like all of his other conquests (including his own mother Rhea just to prove a point) Zeus raped his own daughter Persephone and she became pregnant with Zagreus. Zeus also didn't like other males (Gods or Mortals) sleeping with the Goddesses or Mortal Women he'd been with......or do I need to bring up Demeter and Zeus' son Iasion?

You can guess what happens next, but all turns out well for Psyche lol. Interesting, the Myth version of Persephone's kidnapping I heard was how Aphrodite ordered Eros to shoot his arrow at Hades, and the first person he saw was Persephone lol.

because the major gods were limited but only want to marry major gods (although they will sleep with anyone with a pretty face) and the gods are similar to rulers of society back then. Ok, but the Orpheus one is actually messed up, too. Persephone knew he wouldn’t be able to resist to look behind him, and decided the requirement herself. Hades only approved it. Loosing his wife for a second time, Orpheus withered in grief and played his lyre in a way that called for death. He was later beheaded by Maenads, his head still singing beautifully.

Also it’s believed that it was Persephone that was the feared one. Her epithets include “Dread Persephone” and “ The Pale Queen” among other metal titles. Heck, even her name Persephone literally translates to “Harbinger of Doom/Destruction” which hints that in Ancient Greece she was the terrifying eldritch goddess of death, decay, and devastation itself.

I like to think that Persephone wasn't abducted by Hades but rescued by him from her over-bearing and over-protective mother. We only see the myth from the perspective of Demeter and not Persephone. I think that wasn't their first meeting and they started a romance long before that, Hades gave Persephone a a diamond encrusted golden comb as a gift. But when Demeter found the comb she cracked down and made sure her daughter couldn't go anywhere without nymphs and the eternal virgin goddesses keeping watch over her. So her abduction was actually a rescue by a knight in shadowy armor.

Nice video! Even nicer to see popular youtubers educating people on Greek mythology. I have an interesting interpretation of the myth: Persephone was the goddess of vegetation before her abduction. Then she was the queen of the underworld. Apart from the seasons, the myth also explains the connection between life and death and why humans (and some animals) bury their dead. An example would be a fruit that rots, falls from the tree, and fertilizes the soil and a new form of life grows.

The family is warned not to look back, but Lot’s wife does and is turned into a pillar of salt and is lost forever. Obviously not the whole myth, but that little part towards the end reminded me of that.

Well... if your talking about the original Greek myths it is technically right. In the original myths Summer was when she was brought to the underworld not winter. You see winter in Greece is not a frozen wasteland like say the rest of Northern Europe or North America. The Mediterranean climate in winter is actually somewhat warm and you are able to grow crops during that time. Greece in Summer is almost unbearable as it gets really hot and barely rains so it was harder to grow crops compare to winter. So it was Summer when Demeter gets depressed and crops began to fail. Of course I doubt the movie makers knew that just as they still got half the books story wrong, but Persephone in the underworld at Summer would technically not be inaccurate if your going by the original Greek versions of the myth.
@ryancarson6962
@ryancarson6962 5 жыл бұрын
Sharp Design Actually no it was summer time in the movie, and summer is when she’s with her mother, this is a fact that the books gotten right, she wasn’t in the Underworld at the time and Percy notices that her throne in empty indicating that she isn’t there currently. The films made a lot of changes to the stories of the books, one of which is how Hades is evil and wants the Lightning Bolt for himself when in the books he wasn’t evil and was just pissed that someone stole his Helmet of Darkness. And there are other changes there, this is part of the reason the author stated that he hated the films.
