Possibly inappropriate, but one of his sons died by falling off a cliff when on drugs about 200 metres down the road from where one of my best friends used to live, near Brighton. That friend now lives with my best friend, who tattooed Jethro Cave's finger years ago, who was a fan of my friend's noise band at the time, and demanded he do this bad tattoo for him at the time that they met, so he did. Then yh, he died last year as well. It's pretty weird and crazy.

Stunning tribute. Watching live, it initially seemed too slow/ different compared to the original version but in fact the slowed down version was genius for a funeral as was the omission of the ‘ginger lady’ verse and the changing of the lyrics / finality of the song being ‘over’. Such a difficult performance for a man whose young son literally ‘fell’ into heaven. Colm Mac Con Iomaire on the violin was superb and wonderfully understated and very reverent. World class performace

Such a beautiful song and so wonderfully sad and emotive . This must have been incredibly difficult for Nick Cave , as he would have wanted to do his friend justice but filled with such strong feelings himself. God bless x took me back to my beautiful sisters funeral doing her eulogy. One of the hardest days of my life ♥️

So beautifully sung Nick. Wonderful playing by the fiddler and other musos. Appreciate being at Shane’s service here in Aus via the online transmission. 🌿🎼🌿💚🌿🎶🌿

We never know what the song means, but we know how it makes us feel, and that's all that ever matters. Bless Shane, and Sinead, and all the artists who shakes us up inside with their anger, beauty, dreams, and madnesses.

"I've been loving you along time, down all the years down all the days, and i cried at all your troubles, smiled at your funny little ways.... Now this song is over. We'll never find out what it means. Still, theres a light i hold before me before me and you're the measure of my dreams" Amazing how, when he wrote those words, Shane was never talking about himself, but sung now in tribute to him they sum up exactly how so many people, both those who knew and loved him personally and those who admired him from afar, feel about the great man. And Nick, on the verge of tears, sang it to perfection. God speed shane, thanks for telling us all your sorrows and singing us all your joys.
