@@Patadude100 Nah, there's a _very_ major difference between them: players are still free to add to the stack after it begins to resolve, while the chain is _completely_ locked down once it's done being built. That's one of the big reasons why "missing the timing" is even possible: some effects can only be added to a chain the exact _moment_ their condition is fulfilled, but if that happens while a chain is already resolving, it's impossible to do so. It's also why if you summon a monster in the middle of a chain through a quick effect, you can't immediately use its negate effect on another card in the chain, unless the summon and negate are done in the exact same effect ( i.e. PSY-Frames ).

There's a useful difference between You can only *use* this/each effect of "[card name]" once per turn. (EX: Spellbook of Secrets) and You can only *use 1* effect of "[card name]" per turn and *only once that turn.* (EX: Salamangreat Foxy) Having that distinction is important imo. "Use once per turn" can be negated in any way and you can't try to activate the card or effect again that turn. "Activate once per turn" can have its activation negated (e.g. Legendary Six Samurai - Shi En) and you can use it again that turn, but if you negate its effect (e.g. Magician's Navigation), you can't use it again that turn. And if you negate the activation or effect for "one effect per turn and only once that turn", they can use the other effect, as long as the monster's entire effect isn't blanket negated (e.g. Effect Veiler). Just shortening all of them to "Hard once per turn:" removes those differences, and could create a bunch of ruling mishaps.

The other reason for why is that they're having to make sure that they are being as specific as possible. The older cards weren't specific enough, and that often lead to severely broken effects. The extreme specifics make it so that people know exactly when, how, and why an effect can, will, and should be used. That doesn't justify the ridiculous amount of text, but it does help explain it a little bit. Although, too much text really is just as confusing as not enough.
@PrismariLaura3 жыл бұрын
The problem is that lends to incredibly confusing gameplay. When rules are defined on a card-by-card basis, you need to pay incredible attention to every single card you spot. Cardgames with a consistent ruleset, like MtG, simplify this heavily by standardizing the effects. Every creature with only "Trample" as card text will behave exactly the same way. You still get weird interactions, of course, but it's much easier to parse 99% of the game due to an unified ruleset.

@EskChan19 Жыл бұрын
For real, the DIgimon TCG does this and it's SO easy to read. Timing in a blue box, like "Your Turn", "All Turns", "Your Main Phase", pink textbox for restrictions or triggers like "Once per Turn" , orange hexagon for keywords, which are then explained in brackets behind the keyword for new players, but as a more experienced player you really only need to read these 3 boxes to understand the card. This helps reading the cards SO much.
@Reubs15 жыл бұрын
Magic The Gathering has been doing keywords for a long time so they've learned the best ways to do them. For instance, cards with keywords will have reminder text printed next to them that explain what the keyword does, but not on cards with higher rarity. This is because you will see rare cards less often, and the lower rarity cards will tend to have less effects (thus more text space). Also, some of their evergreen keywords are quite intuitive. Creatures with 'Flying' can't be blocked by non-flying creatures. Creature's with 'First strike' will do their damage first. Etc.
@fikriirshade11325 жыл бұрын
dont you think keyword system kinda limiting cards interaction, variation and future design?
@AlteredNova045 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Most keywords are elegantly intuitive to the point that they only need to be explained once and then they are easy to remember even for new players. Protection from a color = can't be damaged or targeted by cards of that color. Lifelink = whenever it deals damage, you gain that much life. Fear = can only be blocked by black and artifact creatures (so stuff like robots and zombies, which logically cannot feel fear). Haste = can attack immediately (most creatures have to wait a turn after being summoned to attack). Trample = any extra damage this creature deals to a blocking creature still hits the opposing player (it basically runs the blocker over and is just slowed down by however tough that blocker was.) In my experience, memorizing keyword abilities is actually one of the easiest parts of learning how to play magic the gathering. It's learning how to use the stack (rules about when you can play different kinds of cards, such as during opponent's turn or "in response" to their spells) that really trips up new players.
@GuyNamedJordan5 жыл бұрын
@@fikriirshade1132 Not really. Keywords don't have to act as the card's whole ability if the designers don't want it to, especially for the more powerful cards. Magic also tends to experiment and create next keywords every few sets to keep things fresh as well providing flavor towards the set's theme.
@rueblie26275 жыл бұрын
Flying is not at all intuitive. You would never work out what it meant without explanation. Same is true of a lot of keywords, flying at least is on lots and lots of things so you get used to seeing it but the less common ones are pretty opaque. I still don’t really understand how first strike works even with the description anyway.
@Ballade905 жыл бұрын
@@rueblie2627 It's easy, the damage step in Magic is done in basically two phases: the first strike phase and the second strike phase, and by default all damage is assigned during the second strike phase, whereas if you have first strike you do your damage during the first strike phase and if you do enough damage to drop their health to 0 (or have deathtouch), you basically win that fight. Visualize it as a fist-fight where first strike is someone throwing a punch super quickly before getting hit compared to no first strike where two people punch each other at the same time. You only need to have it be explained once to get it due to how short the explanations are. Yugioh though is so complex that there aren't many instances in which a keyword system would help. Banish and pierce are a thing sure but there aren't too many repeating effects beyond archetype gimmicks and even then not all of them are done in the same way, Ghostricks and Maldoche have the same wording for their archetype specific cards but Blackwings don't, Endymion don't, Mythical Beast don't, so not every archetype would benefit from keywords and it would be limited to just archetypes as well which doesn't help due to basic redundancy (you aren't going to find a non-ghostrick that has the same effect as a ghostrick too often).

Once someone gets used to how Yugioh works and the gimmicks of each archetype, it starts to have a certain "flow" that is progressively easier to put together. There’s a couple really big things too in addition to what you talked about: 1) Cards used to only come with one effect (plus maybe a restriction). Now, a lot of cards come with 3 or 4 effects it seems. 2) Because Konami has had issues with individual cards becoming too powerful, almost every single effect monster printed includes the sentence “you may only use the effect of ‘insert card name here’ once per turn.” Combine these two things and you get cards with multiple effects that all end in this “once per turn” clause.

Perhaps a change in the overall rules is overdue. Yeah...it’s due to the literal wall of texts why I was never really able to get into the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG. My slow brain just can’t read that much and then remember it in such a short time lol.

No bro . I played with my friends 1 years ago yu gi oh again . And almost no one was able to know all the effects of our Cards. After a time we stopped readin the Card effects and looking Up Wikis and asking on some YuGiOh groups in Facebook how the cards work and some of the new rules. The Card game was totally a text chaos from the Start and sometimes if you didnt read deep enough then some words could change the whole effect differently then you expect. Sometimes our group thought we we're autistic or something but its just the dann Text that was a Nightmare. Even mtg is simpler to understand than YuGiOh.

watch videos that break down each mechanic one at a time then all you need is to read the card text take your time they're not that complicated especially structure deck cards
@Snyperwolf915 жыл бұрын
@@quietguyjosh4643Well thats the part about learning the game but making it smoother to read would be much more appreciated because looking up effects shouldnt be such a Research on its own . Just Reading the effect and understanding it in no time should be the highest priority. But still a good solution indeed.

A Trick I Use Is To Only Remember The Parts That Apply To You (Not Every Part Of Every Effect Needs To Be Used In Order To Use The Effect)/The Cards In Your Deck. Granted,There May Be Times When You'll Have To Go Back And Read It Again Because Of Something The Other Guy Did But As A Whole,It's Helpful For When You Know You Can Still Use The Effect But Don't Have Anything To Apply Some Of It To. Another Trick (For Effects You NEED Every Part For) Is To Simply Make Sure The Effect Works Well With Other Cards In Your Deck/Know EXACTLY What Cards You Have That You Intend To Use It On (For A Very Simple Example: I Have One Card In Duel Links That Let's You Special Summon A Dragon From Your Hand Once It's Destroyed So My PLAN Is To Always Wait Until I Have A Blue-Eyes,Set My The Effect Dragon So It Get's Destroyed And Then BAM: I Got My 3000 Attack Blue-Eyes To Replace It) And Make A Point To Remember THAT Rather Then The Text,Itself. Granted,I Don't Play Competitive So Maybe This Does't Work In Those Kinds Of Games But It Works Almost Every Time For The Duels I Play,So It's Worth A Shot.

This is what happens when your most iconic monster is the blue eyes white dragon, supposedly the strongest monster in existence. It’s unwise for them to make stronger cards in terms of raw stats. Because thry would diminish their most iconic card. So they need to add effects

i think the large card texts are cool, it actually allows me to use my brain figuring out the combos you can do with the cards
@cypherdastro81055 жыл бұрын
Thats what I think is the big draw of Yugioh nowadays. It's very frustrating at first, but taking the time to learn the cards you play can open up so many doors to you and allow you to figure out combos with other cards and even make learning new decks a lot easier.

As someone who plays yugioh a lot I feel like I have to say that the vast majority of cards in the game don't have that crazy amount of text. most cards you'll see used are 2 sentences at most. And after you see the same card two or three times you'll already know what the card does
@cypherdastro81055 жыл бұрын
Not only that but as you get better you can even quickly scan through card text to find exactly what your looking for especially if you know what to skip over.

Man yells about game becoming complex over time for 13 minutes EDIT: Also, you're thinking of Starter Decks (which the TCG even skipped on this year). Structure Decks are meant to give you the essentials to play a certain deck, but are not necessarily meant for beginners. They don't usually come with stuff like Normal monsters, because those are not essential -and if they do, they have to be directly related to the main strategy like Megalosmasher X in the 2017 dinosaur structure.

@lemonworm5 жыл бұрын
I kind of understand where konami's coming from with choosing a wall of text over monikers for common effects, not because its "simpler" as they claim but because often the same effect can be worded slightly differently to cause a different result in the game. The ability for them to word freely gives the cards more room to have effects which make them feel like individuals, and a deck feels like some crazy word game where all these paragraphs are synergizing together. I get that the text is a massive barrier to entry to new players, but its the nuance of slightly different wordings and all these minor conditional aspects to various effects that makes every card, even bad ones, feel unique, and makes the game kind of an endless rabbit hole to dive through.
@EskChan19 Жыл бұрын
This is also a downside because as a player you always have to read the text multiple times to really get these wording differences because sometimes a single word completely changes how the card actually works, if you miss timing or get to use it and so on. A more standardized pattern would make it more easily understandable for everyone.
