I had the privilege to meet him backstage back in 1995. Very soft spoken guy and his hands were soft and supple when I got to shake hands with him. I brought my homemade cajon with me and played it for him, he remarked “he makes it sing with his FOOT!” because I was using my left foot to change the pitch of the cajon. He was impressed and his cajon player started doing it the next night. Now it’s a pretty common technique. I figured it out through trial and error way back then. Paco was the real deal-loved playing and loved hearing innovative ideas. I was so glad to have met him and to be able to play a little cajon for him. He gave me an affirming nod and smile, and walked away. I later got him and his entire sextet to sign the cajons I made.

That's the soul of Spain. non-spanish speakers often confuse spanish folk with latin/centre american, just because we speak the same language. you cannot compare flamenco with samba, or mexican mariachi. They are all different worlds. As a spanish metal guitarist I have to admit that having taken some flamenco lessons in my youth was something that amazed me when doing metal stuff. I found so many connections. flamenco is so dark. Since I was a child I always felt it serious, elegant as well as dark and sinister.

btw, the ringing effect you mention is not intrinsically Paco's own playing, but the way the guitar is constructed and designed to sound in particular robust and ringing way. His instrument is 'Sobrinos de Domingo Esteso' medialuna from the family of Hermanos Conde. Spruce, brasilian rosewood, ebony and cedar. High tension strings also help. Needless to sauy, such guitar will lighten your budget by an amount of a modest modern sports car. flamenco guitars have a very special feel and are of different properties. Some are very unforgiving and hard to play, others incredibly easy to play with very low action. I myself own a vintage Jose Lopez Bellido. Incredibly sounding instrument.

Flamenco is like the blues, it runs in the blood and it is something that comes from the cradle, from before one was born. Like the blues, many of us can try to play it, with better or worse results, but if it comes from birth, that is a guarantee of quality. There is a legend in some places in Spain that says that when he or his brother Ramon de Algeciras were still children and did a misdeed, their father punished them for hours playing the guitar in a dark room...whether this is true or not, we will never know for sure. What is certain is that he was, is and will be a teacher of teachers.

@@TheKillogicEffect no, thank you! I'm from the North of Spain (Celtic pop/rock) and we didn't listen to flamenco much. Watching your videos about Paco and your appreciation for his music has made me re-discover and really enjoy Paco for the first time!

I would highly recommend you “Paco Cepero”. It’s also a great Spanish guitarist who was a close friend to Paco de Lucia. My father (also a flamenco guitarist) had the luck to meet Paco de Lucia in Malaga on Holiday. We sit all together in a Spanish beach bar just listening my father and him enjoying playing the guitar together. I remember that day quite well. Paco was a very kind man. I remember that he bought me an ice cream that day.

"It used to be 2 very good guitarist in history, Jimy Hendrix and Eric Clapton, but above them and all the rest.. we will always have Paco de Lucia" The GOAT of Spanish guitar!! Without 1 single piece of doubt. The guitar it was for him like another organ of his body, his blood was running through it and watching him on live it was one of the most enjoyable thing to do in life, you could be listening for hours and hours non stop, he never ever hit one false note, he was just SPECTACULAR... Paco the Lucía it was for the guitar like Fredy Mercury for music ❤

Paco is the yardstick against which ALL flamenco players are measured. There is no one like him!

Very pleased to see your genuine and appropriate reaction. Paco doesn't use any special techniques, he refined the arte to some degree, his predecessors Nino Ricardo, Sabicas, Ramon Montoya etc. used the same techniques, but the eras when they performed and left their own mark in the history of this art was a bit simpler. Paco's performances are extremely complex and condensed and much more abstract.

Listen, the left hand, is impressive, to say the least. But I also saw footage from Django, playing with two fingers. But here's the CATCH: it is his RIGHT hand that has ALL the power. What he does with his right hand is just beyond perfection. It becomes a mid on its own. Put that with his leg hand following his RIGHT hand... well... he sits back and enjoys it. Check his body language. Right hand: boss. Left hand: follows. His brain? Just chilling.

The last fast picked phrase is with only 2 fingers on the right hand. Anytime you hear that type of run it's almost always only 2 fingers. It's incredible The technique is picado, google paco de lucia picado (or apoyando) it's crazy.

@@TheKillogicEffect it's beyond comprehension, I've been playing flamenco for nearly 5 years now and I'm not even at 3/4 of the speed he's at (have been playing guitar for a few years before going into flamenco) it's gonna take another 5 to get close, but not nearly as clean
