I liked the conversation at the end about winning. I'm a fan of F1 and there's a reason why up and coming drivers say you have to have a certain mentality about not giving any ground to Hamilton (for example) because you respect him too much. I think this conversation is universal in competition. It's interesting you had the conversation so openly.
@TheKillPeteStrategy2 жыл бұрын
I lot of people like to chime in on this part of the conversation while missing much of the context. My favourite part of FFA competition is the self corrective function. A player who is a known quantity or known to be 'good' faces additional scrutiny. I literally named my channel after it. I'm happy to have all my conversations out in the open because that's how we figure out what we actually think.

@@TheKillPeteStrategy Agreed. And every seasoned strategy gamer knows this as well; metagaming itself is a skill and in such delivers meritous and honorable wins. That being the case, not only is there no shame in winning by leveraging your metagame influence, but much credit and honor to be gained from winning by leveraging these skills as well. As a poker pro myself, it's immediately obvious that your friend, although a great strategist, is not a live player (he focuses on online play) because the headgames, table talk and other skills needed to succeed live are in fact rich and deep skill trees that can seriously raise your edge, and there's no reason why these wouldn't apply to boardgames as well. I've been to many live boardgame tournies and establishing a good metagame presence seems to be an essential edge there as well, so there's no rational reason why it shouldn't be a factor in the digital version.

@@TheKillPeteStrategy thing is the wins you get from people wanting to get on your good side are outweighed by people targeting you for your record/because it is you, at least before they started hiding records. With hidden records it might slant the other way now but I just found your channel recently so I have been watching a lot of old content. It also might still slant to people not targeting you during tournaments because you are playing with more established people but my mind hasn't been separating it all to notice. I agree that high-level fixed games (ESPECIALLY with zombies) are a lot more interesting to watch when fog is on. These settings were particularly problematic because it's basically a stalemate until the zombies decide to infect the next player (basically eliminating them). So if you got infected early on, you'd be safe, but if your stack of 120 gets infected, you lose immediately. It's just going to be random and doesn't particularly reward skillful play. Just add fog to these settings and you'll have a more interesting game

With regard to the conversation starting around 1:06:00, about cheating, I have some thoughts. The most important thing to remember is that you can NEVER completely eliminate cheating. Cheaters will find a way, no matter what you do. So when you compromise the game to "stop" cheaters, all you get a compromised game. If you can make cheating harder while making changes that aren't detrimental to the game, then great. Do those things. But there's no end to the rabbit hole of "Let's just compromise the game a little bit because we're afraid of cheaters." It's best to just not go down it, and accept that some amount of cheaters will need to be dealt with the hard way. Will the cheaters ruin some games before they get caught? Yes, they will. But that's better than ruining ALL games in the mistaken belief that doing so eliminated the cheaters.

Interesting conversation at the end. As for Pete accepting "pity wins" due to popularity, how is that any different from certain NBA players getting special treatment from refs because they know how to talk to them? Or because they're such big stars that the refs don't dare give them six fouls in an important game? (Which forces them to the bench) Otherwise the NBA is a balanced game, right? Yes all that is "unfair" but so is being born taller or with better muscles for jumping. Basketball's a competition, not a collaboration, so you take whatever advantage you can get. Well, that's what Pete is doing. He's turning a meta-game into a meta-meta-game, to get a small advantage. And isn't that the entire point of a game like Risk? If it wasn't, it would be a math game and I can play Sudoku to scratch that itch. Pete brings viewers precisely because he is playing the psych game, not in spite of it.

I think the discussion towards the end about how some of the games turned out has no perfect answer, however the same problems pop up in any social game. It's impossible to completely separate what is known about a player or that person's influence from the game itself, that creates targets on a player that is known to be more skillful, or just blatantly more popular, at the same time generating advantages if they use their position outside the game to effect it. On the whole, if used correctly, these advantages and disadvantages tend to in my mind even out in the end but that does require an individual to maximize advantages to push the edge. That discussion can really only get you so far though because in the end everyone wants to win or at least go as far as they can. I don't agree at all that it's wrong to press your advantages and covering or minimizing disadvantages, if you don't do that you're not playing the game whether those are directly from the game or not. There becomes a meta within the meta of pressing advantages without pressing too far that people target you more and that's really the hardest part of playing a social game repeatedly with or infront of people you are going to play with in the future. It's like exposing your strategies to people you are going to compete against, you want to use them to win the game you're currently in, but don't want to show everything so you can win the next. Pete does walk this line really well in my opinion because (1) he owns this balance and is upfront about it (2) he knows what is too far and (3) he is honest and open about when others "assist" him more than it makes good game sense for them to do so. Most of what makes it right or wrong in my opinion comes down to the way you take it and being upfront and honest is the best way to play it in game and the game within the game.

I love this take. I've been trying to bring this aspect of the game to the forefront. Since the ranking system has remained broken in favour of 1v1s many 'top' risk players see analytic calculation as the highest order skill in the game. Hi Pete, been watching your videos religiously for months on end now and I'm hooked on Risk because of you. I know how much you like open and honest conversations so this isn't meant to be a criticism (as much as it's about to sound like it is XD). However, do you think sometimes your behaviour can be a little arrogant and sore loser(ish)? I've seen you report people for collaborating and yet you seem very happy to do the same when it benefits you. Also using your popularity to get wins in some games and to manipulate your opponents into giving you the edge doesn't seem very sportsman like to me. I think self-reflection is the best quality someone can have and just wondering if you think about this or not? This is coming from someone who is very self critical.
@davidberrett59392 жыл бұрын
One thing to keep in mind in regards to him reporting people for collaborating is those games are supposed to be a random matching of players that don't have any association with each other, and the report is to investigate if those reported have a pattern of working together in games they play together. The instances where pete is actively negotiating with other players and trying to influence them to help him are in tournament settings where all players have the understanding that voice chat is allowed and part of the game.
@TheKillPeteStrategy2 жыл бұрын
The default to (over) report in global dom games is a good thing because we will help SMG manage the intractable problem of cheating on their platform. Collaborating in play with friends mode is an integral part of the game of Risk. Perhaps that explains some of the discrepancy you're noticing. I fight a battle with ego every day. I find it interesting how few people realized during my episode on arrogance that I was speaking about myself. To your final point about the influence of popularity in an FFA game. Being 'good' and 'known to be good' is a disadvantage. Manipulating my opponents into giving a player an edge is the highest skill in the game of Risk.

I don't like the matches where you guys are all in discord. It's too much of social engineering and not so much strategy. The person with Charisma and ability to communicate will often get a more advantageous position because of communication skills which is important in warfare but this is a strategy game not Among us. At least in alliance mode your limited on what you can say so things can be mis interrupted or not understood. But the game is significantly better to watch as a viewer when the games aren't discord games. Now Discord games where fog of war is on and alliances is off would be great because then it becomes an actual tactic how much information you give away and too who. But the first hour of this game is hard to watch because of the fact you are in discord and we all know what is going to happen. I'm speaking to pure entertainment value of your content. Fog of war, no alliance discord games are much more enjoyable to watch. Of course this is just my opinion and I might differ from the rest of people which I often do lol. Thanks for the videos. Edit: At 1:06 you actually talk about what I'm saying. This was hard to watch. All the games where everyone is in discord are hard to watch for me though.

@@TheKillPeteStrategy Yes but your content is better when you are describing your thoughts and what you think the others might be doing. Even alliance mode is okay since your guessing what they are thinking as opposed to them just outright saying KILL BLACK. Discord turns the content into 2 people winning 1 person being quite and hoping everyone forgot they were there then 3 people haggling to get into the 2/3 person winning pact that was completely determined by random placement from auto or who got to place first and the following discussion about where to place. That said if you had fog of war on then discord becomes more interesting because we don't know if they are lying or not. Which is what Among us is with social engineering and people lying. Risk with discord and no fog of war is just a slog to watch. We often know the outcome after the first 5 minutes of gameplay. But I'm just a random dude lol. Just my opinion. Your past 15k subs and I don't stream so I don't really know. Was just an observation from your video's that I actually watch and ones I skip.

Well that game sucked to watch ngl 😂 didn't really seem skill based at all just bullshit and waiting until zombies decide who dies

Yeah I was pretty disappointed with the settings so far.

Yep these types of modes have no place in a tourney of a “Skill Based Game.” Should do the utmost to use Modes and Settings that ensure Games are decided by player based decisions and not 99% Computer Generated RNG & 1% Player Choices!!!

Found this channel and have bingewatched all week while sick. Seems to me you really blew your chances of winning this game back at the 19 or 20 minute mark. You had stabilized and locked down your farm, and controlled the hallway leading to the next one on the right. Instead of aggressively seeking to secure that farm, you were content to let the Zombies have it, and they eventually infested you anyway. It would have cost you a lot of troops early on, and taken a number of turns, but securing that farm would have more than made up for it in the long run. You would have quickly gained the lead in troops and been able to dictate the course of the game better. Clearly no one was interested in coming after you. Any reasons why you did not go after it? Secondly, at the 23:30 mark, you abandoned the crossroads, and let Black and Orange start receiving cards. Any reason why? I'd have pointed to the zombies and told them to earn their own card. It's not like they are particularly hard to kill, and having those 2 fighting the zombies advances your game plan as well. Orange expended way too many troops fighting zombies for a card, which was giving Black a free card as well. Tyler seems to have played that poorly, though I realize he was in a tight spot. This was a very poor game all around, IMO. What is your recap? Love watching your vids, and I've learned a lot.

Recap is since I couldn't win this tournament anyways I had no real incentive to play my best. Hopefully next season we get good settings like no prog caps and no fogless fixed zombies.

Wide open chat makes the game worse and longer than it should be. You're channel doesn't need it.

It's my favourite way to play.

@@TheKillPeteStrategy You loss rate is higher when you play your "favorite way". Good fun to have drinks over, but neither mathematically or economically sound. Goes for everything.
