Regarding the hanging alliance issue: We know that experienced players understand the alliance system to be useful for the purpose of communicating with other players. We also know that a lot of newer players view the alliance as an agreement for mutual aid rather than just a tool for communication. If a less experienced player gets an alliance request right at the start of the game, they don't want to commit to mutual aid before the bonuses have shaken out and don't want to feel obligated to help someone who might be an obstacle to them establishing a position and thus leave the alliance hanging and forget about it, thereby disabling alliance requests in the future. To combat this problem, I like to wait a turn or two to send out alliance requests so that it is very obvious to the player receiving it that we can work together and that I am not going to be a threat straight away. If they are someone who believes the alliances are a mutual aid agreement then they will be more likely to accept once they realize that I am not going to break them for no reason and that I am not fighting them for the same bonus.

When you play out the prisoner's dilemma mathematically over, say, 200 choices in a row, a "most successful" strategy emerges. Just like Pete said: you default with cooperation but retaliate when betrayed. However, that sometimes results in a 'death spiral' with the other party retaliate on your retaliation. To mitigate that possibility, you have to sometimes let their betrayal slide and offer cooperation instead.

I honestly feel like red and black were the same player even though they were hitting each other in the beginning. They were both absolutely terrible in exactly the same way and I don't think either of them knew how to fortify.

Risk had been a lot of fun. But lately people have been jerks. Lol played a fixed capitals on Europe advance and had all my bonuses broken unprovoked all but 2 out of the 22 turns. Plus bots full sent into me breaking 4 bonuses all at once the 1 turn I had a chance to hold them. This type of play has been happening a lot lately. I dropped from 20k ffa ranked points to 6k. Been back up into the low teens but still been hard to survive with people full sending into me almost everymatch feeding me to others. No one wants to cooperate. I am the type of player that enjoys diplomatic play. Lol and I have been having atrocious dice. Lolz
