Hadn't seen anyone else report on the CGS-GameTrayz with the info of WHY there was the art removal. Good to know it's because an employee misused their time and not something dirty GameTrayz was doing, which was what many thought.

Time will tell. From what CGS said in their update they tried to resolve this before it got to this point (with Gametrayz) but that's just one side and without details. Really I just hope backers are okay.

Here's what I don't understand about Awaken Realms using AI. If they have these artists, they could literally take all their own art they've made for their other games, have their artists pump out stuff as well, and then train an AI on their OWN art. That way, it's at least ethical that they aren't using anyone else's art.

On Grimcoven: I think you're spot on. the response from them is definitely to push back against the people screaming and yelling "AI Art is stealing and bad". I'm going to borrow this quote I saw this morning as it fits really well here. “Who does not understand should either learn, or be silent.” John Dee Most people yelling aren't really looking at what's being told to them or how the AI art/tools function. This just screams to me of the whole "That's Photoshopped" era of pictures on the net. They did get caught but in an update explained their approach, how they use AI, that they are doing everything very legally with use of art and still people complain and scream boycott. With Peterson Games issue: I agree that's not a really good conversation and not how you want to respond to people who have been very angry with PG for a very long time. Sounds like there is a lot of hate and family drama here as well. I've personally written off getting Hyperspace and Eternal Adversary. If I see them, great and if not that's ok at this point. Some people just don't have the soft skills to interact with others. they are very difficult skills to learn. Without them, you can't really be the face of the company to the consumer/customers of your company.

My concern with Odalin is how large will it be. Tanares was really good, but it took so much table to play, almost too much table and had so many boxes that were needed to pull bits out of. If they could tone down the bloat and streamline a few things I think it could be really good.

We've got you covered on less table space. That is one of the things we focused on Odalin, to make the gameplay as engaging as Tanares but focus on being a streamlined game with a shorter rulebook, less table clutter, and more dynamic gameplay.

Agreed! I think Tanares seems to have fallen in a trap many, many games fall into. As more versions come out they have to add something new and eventually so much has been added that it's becomes less streamlined because of it. Reminds me of MMO's that have been out for years that start out focused but end up with a decade of feature bloat.

Surprised to learn about the Hasbro-Dreamworks Animation merger/acquisition here, given my status as a D&D head. I think another part of this is that some people at Hasbro perhaps haven't given up on turning some of their IP into movies even after the disappointing box office performance of the D&D movie. Hasbro sold off most of their movie studio before they even released the movie to pay off debt. Getting together with DreamWorks Animation would let them get their foot in the moviemaking door without having to rebuild their own studio from scratch.

On the subject of let downs, I am curious as to your opinions on the Dawn of Madness wave 1 stuff. Seems like the promised core box inserts were completely removed with everything just tossed into a smaller box within a main box. There is literally nowhere for the cards or tokens to go except plastic baggies. The plastic figure trays are also unbelievably cheap with that super thin brittle plastic (most of mine arrived all broken up in fact). It seems like a real let down considering the price tag for such a premium board game to say nothing of the huge wait. I ask since I know you are a fan of Diemension Games and seem to have a line of communication with Byron over there.

I have been following Hasbro throughout 2023 and 2024. (1) It might be a daunting challenge for Hasbro to find the money for this merger. (2) Hasbro developed toys to tie in with Disney movies, and they were badly burned when the movies did poorly, failing to develop a demand for the toys. Why would Hasbro be eager to take on a similar risk with Dreamworks?

I'm waiting for Dinosaur 1944 from Petersen myself, but not on their discord. Mostly written the game off at this point, certainly not getting anything else from them at any point ever. The game was of course promised as basically complete 3 years or so ago, which of course is confusing when the updates are all talking about how they'll work on the game once other games are done. Meh, whatever. Money's lost, not going to stress about it. That said, as we all know, other folks take the "lies and theft" and stuff a lot more to heart than I do. doxing, death threats, just constant badgering because such thieves don't deserve a moment or rest and so on. I imagine the guy is just responding to these folks, for the most part. Wrong way to respond, sure, but it doesn't really matter to me. Oh, they're going to do meeples or whatever instead of the minis I actually wanted? I have no interest in that, so if it happens I'll just sell off the box when it arrives to recoup some of my lost money. "We don't owe you anything" is a true statement. We invested in a project with no guarantees, the project has been a complete failure, our money is lost. If they think they're engendering any good will by saying "you'll take what you get and like it", well then they might be a bit surprised that no one will ever buy from them again.

The companies statement was wrong. Customers don't "kind of suck", they really suck. Go through the comments of a kickstarter people are excited about that is late but still delivering. What a dumpster fire. Fact is, this isn't retail. You don't just get one shitty customer every 25 that's a little rude, you get 2 comments in 5 that shit all over you and everything you're doing, lawsuit threats, weird standardized statements about Kickstarter returns, implied physical threats. So many ignorant comments not based in any type of reality. Anonymity allows these toxic parts of the community to say whatever they want once they don't get the toy they wanted on time. Which I agree is a combative and reductive statement, but that's what it breaks down to. I'd say the restraint of most devs, including this one, is unbelievable. The crazyiest thing is, none of this is unexpected. Every huge Kickstarter has delays, mold problems, translation errors, changed scope, etc, etc, etc. It's time for people to learn and accept that there is no exact science to putting out these incredible boxed experiences, so there can't be an exact timeline. Dawn of Madness and Madness Reborn are probably the most egregious examples that I backed of questionable timelines. So I think the devs should be punching back at these people. Telling people they suck as customers or that they should touch grass is such a pillow throw of an insult and I can't imagine an adult getting upset about it. I'm not talking about legit concerns and comments that are written in a way that encourages discussion between the community and the dev. I'm talking about the 40 "WHERE'S MY GAME, I'M SUING!" comments over and over. If customers don't want devs, or retail workers for that matter, to hurt their feelings, then they need to bring thoughtful, well written discussions that the dev can address, instead of insults that cause one side to shut down. We aren't our parent's generation. We don't get to treat the people who serve us like shit anymore and act we don't know we did something wrong. Finally, it's shitty but everyone knows the risk of crowd funding. In terms of how many crowd funded projects are running at anytime a negligible amount don't deliver and cut and run, but the risk is still there that you will pay 500 dollars to follow a campaign that will never yield anything physical.

Sometimes the companies deserve the vitriol. Druid City Games is notorious for lying and moving the goal posts. I backed Wonderland War's second printing and there was a period of time I did not think I was going to get that game. It just a very badly mismanaged and the communication was done mostly on other sites (Facebook and Discord) instead of Kickstarter. Now I wish I could any kind of communication from FunForge on Monumental as they have also just lied and been deceptive and now have gone silent since the end of November.

Good video. But in regards to PG, this adds to why people are distrusting KS/CF, especially for board games. Fundamentally changing what is included in the game? That is not what the average/new person expects when they buy it. And yeah, the way KSer is now, it is buying like at a game store. These antics drive away people from using KS, which then affects the real small people who need it to start up.

I'm on the PG discord since I quite enjoy their main games and I can say that post isn't really worth listening to. I didn't find the post about things changing for the game (may have overlooked it), but for the rest, PG discord is actually absurdly toxic due to the number of people who are rabid about how things have gone. It doesn't surprise me at all to see some of the comments he made, and looking back through the conversation, it's been largely polite and friendly from him. I think the point he was making was to the horribly toxic people that they just need to calm down and stop acting like PG has committed the most heinous of crimes. Honestly that would be one of the things I hate most about KS projects: the vocal people involved that take any perceived slight or delay as being deserving of death. Just a few years ago we had a pandemic that had massive economic ramifications and tons of companies went out of business or are still suffering the effects, especially ones like KS board game makers that don't tend to have stable income streams and are heavily affected by price changes of manufacturing and shipping. Things went unexpectedly bad for some companies. Some handled it well, some didn't or couldn't and that's just the reality of things.

You’re giving Cyberpunk a good wrap however since the latest update where they showed a demo the comment section is full of unhappy people. So many are trashing the mechanics it’s not funny. Comments like “enemies are static”, “too much like the Witcher”, “do not like the app, do not like the timer”, “game is boring”, “game is chaotic” etc etc. Personally do not like what I saw either. It’s a board game. It shouldn’t be an hour or two of total chaos and frantic madness. Gangs of Night City is looking pretty good right now. Turn based, simple, no stress. A board game. Not a board game trying to run like it’s a video game. It doesn’t work.

I don't see how it's much like the witcher. Anyway there's certainly room for new types of games I feel. I have a lot of games, one that plays different is much appreciated! I always found Operation stressful as a kid haha. A lot of dexterity games are to me. I have a game I play with my daughter where we balance beaver meeples and logs and the first to make it fall looses. Is that a board game? How do we define it? For me, with apps, I base it in how much j fuss with the app part. Here it's hardly at all, much like 6 siege.

Weird complaint, but it's weird to me that Dragori Games for Odalin named their character with the snakes coming out of his shoulder "Nergal" when that's clearly Zahhak's deal.

You are correct; this aspect of the miniature was inspired by Zahhak's myth. During development, we drew inspiration from many different sources, but we needed to tie it all together. In the end, Odalin is its own world, with its own myths and characters. They draw inspiration from many cultures of our world but in their own unique way. The naming, artwork, locations, and enemies all fit together to create a brand-new fantasy world that draws inspiration from different cultures of our own but is unique in how it ties things out. Hope this explains why we decided to name it differently. We are aware we took this "artistic freedom" and hope people will enjoy it. =D

What you said makes sense, but then why is he named after the Babylonian God of the underworld? Does he share a lot in common with him? Or is this something you want to wait to reveal?

The names of the demons are based on the different sins they represent. That is a key point for the lore of Odalin. Myths have many different sources and interpretations, and gods of culture sometimes translate differently to other cultures or are vilified as "demonic beings" over the ages. So, it's hard to nail a precise and clear interpretation for them. We decided to use the most well-known versions of each demon and give them unique twists that are unique to Odalin, sometimes giving them unique features inspired by Persian or Mesopotamian sources to emphasize the desert fantasy theme. As someone with a formal education in anthropology, I deeply respect myths and their importance in human history. As a game designer, I always try to make a nod to them, but I try to be careful not to alienate the majority of our players, as many are not as interested in those details as you and I may be. So, while I take inspiration in myths, I try to twist and mix things with a focus on creating something new and engaging that truly speaks to the game. I hope you will enjoy the lore we are crafting!

I don't understand why you're re-hashing that Dreamworks and Hasbro article from 2014. Those talks fell over in 2 weeks and apparently Disney might have had a hand in it. Comcast ended up buying them instead. A quick google search will reveal this.

Dude. It was not jumping to conclusions that their team misused the KZbin drm bs to take down videos using the strike mechanism. That is what happened. The content creators who called it out because they were impacted were absolutely right to do so. CGS may have a legit claim but striking third party channels should not be a tactic you lead with. They can claim thier legal reps did that but they are responsible for the actions of their legal team and they deflected instead of owning the mistake. So nope. Not cutting them slack.

Actually it is. There's no reason to believe they knew the inner workings of YT enough to understand a takedown vs a claim vs something else. There's no way we can know if there are any other inner workings at play either. I showed off Forsaken plenty when it was showing and I didn't get anything. Was it targeted? Was there a reason? Was it just a comment made to control things online and then the YT happened? We literally have zero information and won't until things become more public. This is something I used to fall prey to more often. I have since really tried to have a level head until more details are known. What we do know is that they claim there was stolen art, that Gametrayz knew and wouldn't pay for it (for what reason again we don't know), and that they decided to control what they believe is their owned assets and YT seemingly complied heavily with it. Anything else we'll just have to see.

Ummm... if your legal team does not know the impact of their actions on YT than you should find a team who has worked in the modern era. CGS operates in the crowdfunding world so they sure as heck should know how it works too, and I think they do since they directed their team to reverse the strikes. Your comment about the fact that they did not hit every creator is interesting but does not help your position, if anything it add some questions. None of that matters though. The issue is how they handled it afterwards. If they had said "Hey, a mistake was made and it's our fault that it impacted third parties. We apologize for that impact. Please stick with us while we figure this out." than things would have gone better. But instead they waited a while to respond to the community, then blamed their representatives and did a lot of finger pointing about things they are alleging in their legal brief to be true but so far are not established. Look, I've been a leader in big orgs for a long time. If my team screws up it's on me and I don't tell my customers it's someone else's fault or justify things. I own it. They chose to deflect and defend when they had a likely unintended outcome. They are all but implying GT knew that the artwork was created with CGS money which is pretty unlikely so why are we not calling that out? Obviously were going to disagree but their reaction is the issue not the initial action.

This is the reason that these companies have legal team and don't do anything on the legal side themselves, the law/s is/are very complicated and they do things that may seem off or we non legal people can't wrap our heads around the why's or how's but it make perfect sense to the legal department, and whilst a 'case' is live they are going to do everything in their power to make sure their case is as solid as possible, which includes doing things people like us don't understand.

Degenesis - I would only be interested if it had solo. One vs. Many isn't my thing. MotU - Zero interest in the IP. Cyberpunk Red - Will stick with Necromunda. Cyberpunk 2077 - Following with high interest. Didn't back the CMON version due to the competitive area control theme. Mythic Battles - Egypt is cool, but I have enough of that game already. Odalin - Following with high interest. Grimcoven - Very interested. AI art doesn't bother me. As I understand, every piece is touched up by an artist. Am interested in a one and done boss battler that isn't Townsfolk Tussle. Thankfully I never backed anything from Petersen Games and avoid them like the plague...

Degenesis marketing may have really turned off a lot of people. Also, these big games cost a lot, take up a lot of space, take a lot of time, and there is a lot of other skirmish games out there. People are making choices, and not sure the theme and style of Degenesis are appealing to the masses. Now make me a G.I. Joe vs Cobra skirmish game. That's a theme I'd drop money on.
