Broken glass: pick up big pieces, use vacuum cleaner for small ones. Acne: put zinc ointment on swollen pimples. Bathing in pool with clorated water helps in general, though doesn't help completely, but does reduce big pimples. Stinging eyes: cold. Literally stick your head in your fridge for a minute reduces the stinging. Rust: scrubbing with bicarbonate soda and a bit of water works better than an onion, though not perfectly. It probably doesn't work on a rusty pipe, but if you like burnt a bit of food in a saucepan it works decently. Burn marks on clothes: buy new shirt. xD
@frantisekvrana39024 жыл бұрын
Glass one: something softer, such as an apple or pear would likely work better. But you would still get juice over your surface. Onion vs acne: I remember my grandma used onion to treat a wasp (vespula germanica) sting. Not sure if it had any effect, since it was the only time a wasp stung me that I remember. Onion vs burnmark: How was that even supposed to work. Burn marks are partial carbonisation. There was no way onion juice would repair the destroyed complex molecules.

For the glass one, I'm from Switzerland so we rarely stumble upon the kind of giant onion Cali and Nate had, but we more reliably can find potatoes the size of your fist, sooo... That's where my mind got first. If you're really going to go for vegetable alternatives for picking up glass, I'd think it would be better (potatoes having... close to no smell, and if you get a bit of stark on your surface it's easily washed off)

I've always heard that the best way to avoid crying when chopping onions is using a very sharp knife, because the chemical that makes you cry is released when the cell walls are crushed. So, I would assume that freezing the onion would rupture the cell walls far worse than a mere dull knife, making it incredibly potent.
@ikillyou1214 жыл бұрын
I tend to put some wet paper towels near where I'm chopping the onions. The sulfenic acid in them reacts with the water in your eyes to create sulfuric acid which is what creates that burning feeling and makes you cry. Having a source of water near the onions helps to trap the sulfenic acid coming from them rather than heading towards your eyes. It's not 100% perfect but it seems to work.

So a few tips I've used and found helpful when dealing with onions. When you chew the gum to help, it does in fact help but you put it in your mouth before you start cutting and you chew it in between your front teeth, not on the sides. Chewing on the sides doesn't work. If your eyes do start to burn, put your face in the path of the cold air from the freezer and then open them. Contacts or goggles will help with the crying also. Walla Walla sweet onions have only made me cry when cooking them. Chopping them I am perfectly fine. As soon as they have heat put to them though, it's a different story. We also use damp paper towels to clean up broken glass. Wipe then toss. Love watching you guys keep up the great work.

I couldn't help wondering how gum would help with onion tears. It's not the odor, it's the oils. If you cut the bottom of the onion off first, release the oils, then cut off the top, it's better. (I didn't make that up, I got it from Jeff Smith, the Frugal Gourmet) I don't know if this would work on a burn mark, but peroxide and vinegar mixed 1:1 and dabbed on before washing, removes a great many stains, without damaging the fabric or the dye. It will get out theatrical grease paint makeup from clothing -- along with many different things. (Found that out from the Vogue stain removal book) Also, got blood on your clothing? Peroxide, let it fizz, then wash it in cold water.

Wait. Couldn't you use playdough to pick up glass? (I was just trying to think of a better way to pick up broken glass)

Well, that first one is literally a Glass Onion like The Beatles said.

So what did you guys do to get the onion smell off your hands ? Someone once told me to rub my hands on the stainless steel sink. It worked. Works for hard smells that just don't seem to wash away quickly like Fish, crab boil, onion..

Did anyone else's eyes start watering when Nate was cutting the onion?

I know that rinsing the onion off before cutting it does help .. also take off the skin and two top layers off before rinsing it . There is a small film that causes the misting of the onion juice.. also breathing through your mouth and not your nose also helps as well. But the best way is still to make a slit and take the skin and top two layers off then rinse in warm water before chopping

The gum one works really really well for some people. I've done it before and some kids in a culinary class I took tried it and it worked. It just doesn't work with red onions

I actually use the mint gum method so much as someone who is super susceptible to onions. It makes a huge noticeable difference for me.

You can use onions to help take away the smell of paint, just cut an onion in half and near the painted area, I have done this and for me it worked.

You can perfectly use ducttape, to pick up small pieces of glass or other things. Even metal pieces off magnets. 😊

In South Africa, we have something called a braai, which is basically a much better version of a barbeque. And we use onions to clean the grill before putting meat on. It really does work, the key is heat, and if it's really coated hard then a little hand-powered scrubbing helps.
