Hi I have experience with natural dyeing so just a few notes: The best way to get an even color is to agitate the fabric gently throughout the dyeing process. You can't judge the evenness of the dye on what you tried to dye it with. By folding the fabric you are having it resist the dye to some extent. The turmeric is the strongest and it overpowered the other pieces so they shouldn't have been washed together. In fact, most natural dyes do not take well to overdyeing at all so I'm not surprised by what happened to all your pieces in the end. Also in order to assist with the dye staying on the fabric you would have to use a mordant. I realize that you are testing the videos so it wouldn't be part of your process, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

When you dye clothes the normal way, you're supposed to rinse it with water and then run it through the dryer to help solidify the dye, and then you're free to wash it to check if it stayed. You should try that next time and run the tests that worked well again. That would be a true test to see if they actually behave as dyes.

Andrew Pfeifer Well yes but these aren’t just any other shirt. When you dye clothing you shouldn’t wash them with anything else because it could stain anything else. That applies to these as well. Also the experiment was ruined because of it. To get an actually accurate conclusion, they should’ve definitely washed them separately.

But it’s not just water, because they used tap water, which is often *heavily* altered by metal deposits from old pipes and mineral salts. That’s what it means when you hear the term “hard water.” If your water, has a high mineral content, then it is “hard” with high concentrations of calcium, magnesium, and many other trace minerals. This can lead to many “symptoms” including limescale buildup, decreased “sudsing” from soaps and detergents, and most relevant here: a lower pH, meaning your water is more alkaline or “basic” and will therefor turn red cabbage blue. It just shows how little research they did on the subject if they can say “red cabbage reacts to pH” and then completely fail to recognize the implications of their “plain water” turning cabbage blue.

I know this came out some time ago but i didn’t have this informacion until some time ago! In guatemala they dye cotton with most of the things that was used in this video (obviously not the pennies) and then they set it with banana lead! There a few more different things also so just to make sure I do not miss something I will describe really shortly the whole process! So they use only cotton (I think that is important) then they boil the stuff they will use for at least 35 minutes and then they dip it in banana leaf boiled in water for 35 minutes and that's it! And it doesn't even wash out or transfer on clothing right after its died into it!

You can dye things with plants or at least wool yarn. I'm stydying to become craft teacher in Finland and I had course couple of weeks ago where we collected diffrent plants from nature. for example we had birch and maple leaves and other plants and some kind of mushrooms that I have no idea what to call in english. Most of them you need to boil couple of hours to remove color ftom them then you need to boil them with the yarn at leat an hour and you also need substance that helps color to stick to the fabric and enhances plants natural colors. And you need lots of plants to dye anyting, we had big pots full of them and it only dyes about 300 grams of yarn. But you can get some nice colors from plants.

There are a huge number of natural dyes, though not all will work equally well on different fibres. You also need to pay close attention to which dyes and which fabrics need which mordants too - textile designer and maker

The pennies have to be from before 1960 when they were still made from a higher consemtrantion of copper to get the bluish color
@jerichojoe307
@jerichojoe307 4 жыл бұрын
Incorrect, it doesn't matter what year the pennies are from there all coated in Copper so they would have reacted in some way at least. You will never get blue water from putting pennies in it no matter what the year. I believe they had the clear liquid wrong as they may have assumed that it was water. But you can actually get cupric acetate which is a blue to blue green color by soaking copper in a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and vinegar. Visually you would never know the difference between that liquid and water so I think they just assumed and got it wrong.

nice video u can even dye with moss or grass, but sometimes the colours will pop up when you let the clothes get oxigenated and also sometimes there is no need for a long time exposure, you just need to boil them and that-s it and then you can variate the colour testing with time and heat.
