My father was a Welsh Guardsman from 1938 through to 1944 and saw action with the BEF and D Day. His guardsman duties included Buckingham Palace outside the gates and The Bank of England inside the halls of the bank. This was his favorite guard as they wore plimsols to not damage the marble floors with hobnail boots. At the end of each guard duty they were issued with a newly minted half crown, which in those days bought 2 or 3 pint of draft beer.

I'm curious, would they still patrol inside the bank of England today or did that practice end decades ago?

My Dad, an ex Grenadier Guard either laughed at the ridiculous Naval and Airforce insistence to seeing their arms up to chin height or get pretty angry at the American stiff sharp arm swinging, strutting around like xxxxxx peacocks. Watch the Guards their arm swing is normal just above the waist, any further he said you were likely to start going off balance. The only other thing he hated was bent lines, I walked out at that point 😂😂😂
@nicholascarrington420228 күн бұрын
@@valerienorton4371I'm ex-Army. The standard drill was to swing the arm so that it's parallel with the ground going forward and belt high going backwards. Started in the cadets in the mid 70s and it was still that way when my unit got disbanded in 1999. I've not known any other way!
@valerienorton437128 күн бұрын
@ I'm well aware of this, having served in the Army myself I did plenty of marching and loved every minute, must have been in the blood, although my now ex deceased husband couldn't march for toffee:-6'2" tiic toc marcher swinging arms up to chin level. Dad watched him once ( I did warn ex) as he rejoined us full of self importance, he was shot down with one sentence ; any higher with your ruddy arms you'd have knocked yourself out! Sorry but not sorry if you disagree with my comments, I can't go 6' down and tell my Dad's body he may have been wrong - in your eyes!

The glory has departed from the UK...as a former British citizen under colonialism. It doesn't mean anything now....
What’s the occasion, anyone know? It must be important as the Guards Drum Majors are in State Dress! And there’s going to be a gun salute. At onetime females had to have their tied up in a bun neatly, now it appears it seems pony tails of any length seem to be the order of the & in some case it looked like there was no restraint, maybe in the future guys will be able to grow their hair long, you know, all things equal etc 🤪
@charlottecunningham2141Ай бұрын
@DavidRichards-z2k, this seems to be a compilation of events that have happened thus far in 2024, because the Blues and Royals and Lifeguards were still in their spring/summer attire in the middle of the video and lots of people weren’t in winter coats. The drum majors were in state dress for a recognition for the prince of Qatar who visited a few days ago (or maybe it was something else). The police department doesn’t seem to be as strict with hair having to be tied up unless she slipped under the radar😄
@DavidRichards-z2kАй бұрын

My one grievance is within the Guards, it's the only time I'm pleased my Dad isn't around to watch these things anymore or I think they'd be going through a new tv each year. Reason short people and women. I'm all for women in the forces was one myself and daughter just completed 22yrs. When Dad joined there was a strict height policy - no one under 6ft 1" so everything looked so much smarter as Guards could be. Now it's like looking at a silluette of a roller coaster.

It’s all about equality/discrimination etc When I first walked into the recruiting office back in Sept 1974, I was asked if I had any idea of what regiment I’d like to join, me having no idea offered up the Welsh Guards, oh how they laughed… I was pretty sure they told me the minimum hight for the guards was 5’ 8”, I was 5’ 4”! A major issue these days & it has been for many years is recruitment & beggars can’t be choosers. Anyway, back 50yrs ago on 11th Dec 74 I stood in the recruitment office I swore my oath of allegiance to her Majesty The Queen & took her shilling, a copy of the New Testament & a certificate informing me I had been accepted into the Junior Army & was to report for training on 1st Jan 75. 24yrs later on 11 Dec 98, having being “demobbed” in the July, I attended my induction day at BT as a telephone engineer where I went on to serve for 22yrs, I’ve never done a days work in my life 😂
