I have a severe case of love/hate attitude towards this woman. The love part: Maintenon was a breath of fresh air . She was virtuous and unpretentious . Very intelligent and very thoughtful . I can see why Louis married her . The Cinderalla of the 17th century. Now to the hate part: A religious fanatic . She was instrumental to the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes of 1685 . Which renewed the persecution of the Huegenots , and all the ugliness that genocide brings. As King Louis' wife , Maintenon influenced King Louis into some really bad decision making that almost swept him from the throne . Personally , Maintenon was a great person . Politically she was a train wreck.

Thank you very much for writing out your thoughts on Madame De Maintenon. She was a complicated figure and made the life of some courtiers, such as the life of La Palatine, miserable.

In fact there is no evidence that she encouraged the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. As a child, she was raised by her aunt Madame de Villette who was Protestant. She loved her aunt and for a time she embraced Huguenots beliefs. These accusations come from the enemies of Madame de Maintenon because she was a pious person unlike the majority of courtiers at the court of Versailles and they could not bear that a simple beggar could become the king's wife.

Do you have any what Maintenon said about the king after his death, and about her last words or something. She is one of the most intriguing character, an unlikely pious person in a corrupt indulging court, we can clearly see why Louis married that might have been the best decision of his life. She had many haters for example Princess Palatine. Maintenon is a 17th century Cinderella, after having to go through many hardships She married the most powerful man in Europe, moreover he loved her and listened to her, I think because of her piety God blessed her. I didn't know Peter came to see her. A great video as always.
@TheKingsofFrance3 жыл бұрын
I don't know what she said about the King after his death, but I do know the last words of the King towards Madame de Maintenon were spoken with regret. She had a low social status at court. Although she was married to the King, she was not queen nor did she have an actually important position. When Louis was on his deathbed, he was said to have turned to Madame de Maintenon and he addressed his regret that he had not taken better care of her, and that he had not provided her with a better position, as he well knew life as she knew it would be over when he died.

de Maintenon was rather predictable. What came as a total surprise is the shallow nature of de Montespan. How such a magnificent monarch, who was himself a distinguished dancer, patron of the Arts could have fallen in love with a shallow woman? Unless... she was devastatingly beautiful. Beauty is most certainly not in the eye of the beholder. " Thou cunning'st pattern of excelling nature".

Instead of expecting and demanding that people adapt to you, why don't you try to adapt to the person and attune your ears to grasping accented speech? SMH
