Cleaning up after 'godoksa', lonely deaths in Korea

The Korea Times spoke to Kim Sael-byul, a trauma cleaner, or maybe a profession that should appropriately be called as a memento organizer, and listened to his experience of cleaning 'lonely death scenes,' where people die without anyone knowing, only to be discovered after their neighbors notice the smell.
"There was a scene where a young woman took her own life with baby clothes stacked nearby. Nobody came looking for the clothes so I still keep them here. It's a scene I could never forget," Kim says.
"I wonder what she was thinking in her last moments, when she decided to leave everything behind, including gifts bought for a child she never met."

I think many of us are prideful to ask for help and not wanting to ask for help from family. Maybe we think it’s an inconvenience for them and figure we could do it on our own. While many are are alone by choice, there are others who are cut off from families. I have a cousin in Korea whose father is not speaking to him because he has not passed his exams. My uncle blames it on laziness. I think there’s an age limit and he’s on his last chance. I can see how many end up lonely and ostracized, especially in this present culture. I don’t know the specifics of that or any other job this gentleman have had to perform, but it’s at least it’s giving a glimpse of the plights many are facing, such as starvation, loneliness, and suicide.

All your life? This is gonna sound harsh but you need to get over it, as in you need to over power your negative thoughts and feelings. All those thoughts piling up, are fooling you into thinking your life is hell. You have to be stronger than those thoughts. You gotta change something in your life, start working out, move to a new city, get a new skill, hobby, etc. Living with depression can have a negative effect on your physical health too, and it accumulates. Theres a lot of bad things in the world, and you gotta be stronger than all of them. And forget fearing about what happens after you pass, it happens to everybody. Just improve your life every day and focus on positive things.

That was rough. I went through a starvation semester in college. I would almost pass out but luckily I was able to graduate and leave the next semester. Not only did I not have much money for food I was in so much pain I couldn’t feed myself or walk to the grocery store to buy food. This was before delivery services we have now. I started having an emergency savings after that because I NEVER want to go through that every again!

I hope this guy can keep doing what he does. And never lose his light and will to live. I remember when I was 14 or 15. I had a friend who i didn't really know that well tbh but me him and a bunch of other dudes would chill outside do teenager stuff. We all went to his house one day and were just shocked at the state of his home no one said anything but we didn't feel comfortable chilling there. It was SO SO bad. Like a landfill site. piles of paper, garbage and random items, everywhere, waist high and his mom sitting there like 600 lbs overweight. That very day I made the decision that I was going to change this. I came back the next day with garbage bags and cleaning supplies that i stole from my own home. I worked hard for hours, my friend, his mom, and the rest of my boys telling me to stop, but I kept going (and eventually they started helping me lol) I remember his mom saying "Kirk, where'd you find this kid?" because before when I was just chilling with him, he and his mom were always at odds with each other, fighting all the time. Sometimes, I'd hear his mom blaming him for some of his choices and even some of her own. Anyways, I made his place look beautiful by organizing and sorting, separating important documents from garbage and I even found long lost items that were of sentimental value I returned all of it. And once I was done, I felt there was nothing left for me to do here and I said "see ya tomorrow" and I never chilled with him or any of the rest of my boys again hahaha XD. I will always remember how when i was leaving my friend thanked me truly. Our friendship was brief, but during that period to have made such a difference and impact on someones life and to then just disappear. Feels extra good for some strange reason. I found my dude on IG the other day and it looks like he and his mom have settled their differences and they live happily and his mom lost a ridiculous amount of weight. Made my day. Sometimes people just need a hand cleaning their house and doing that i feel can make a world of difference to them. Give them clear view of life going forward and hope.

I've been doing crime scene cleanup for about a decade now, and despite being in a high crime area, the overwhelming majority of the jobs that I take these days are suicides. I am lucky to live in a rural area of a poor country. In my country no matter how poor we are it is so rare to die from starvation. We always take care of one another. And sometimes even if it is annoying we are lucky to have nosey neighbors. We normally exchange food even if someone didn't ask. We share what grows in our trees with each other. Industrialization and urbanization can be a curse sometimes. People fighting to survive so forget to check on others. Sometimes I wonder what is the meaning of all these technology if we cannot be happy and peaceful. I am so sorry for that man who died of starvation. I wish nobody will ever go through something like that ever again. Not even an animal

Same, I also wonder how hard life is in those big countries or big cities where even with thousands of dollars of salary they still had to take a loan and had a big debt that they need to pay till the next generation. I live in not a really poor city not also a big city. It's still a suburban province so the living expense is not too big, we still can live well here with my mom only making about 150$ a month and a bit of mine about $50 and we can still live in a house with 2 bedroom a proper bathroom and sanitation, with wifi and also with a proper food every day. And we never take a loan from anywhere. So after hearing the story of the life of the people who live in a big city I'm kinda grateful for what I have now.

i had a friend in Korea too. She was very cheerful, she never showed any signs of her getting tired of life. But, even if I'm thousands of miles away from her, I really felt something was wrong. I tried my best to contact someone there to go check up on her every day. After a week of talking and trying to give her courage and reason to live, she took her own life - painlessly. She still appears on my dreams sometimes and always say that one korean line, "조심해" (take care). I was, useless.

In order for them to be saved or to make change, the depressed person must do it themselves and find that inner strength. All us outsiders could do is help as they do it. I've faced this exact thing my whole life and I had to make that change. It's not easy, in fact it's one if the most difficult things I've ever done.

As someone who has struggled and still struggles with suicide, I find this incredibly inspirational, it brought me to tears. Anyone out there, please remember this, just because you feel a certain way now, doesn't mean you are doomed to feel that way forever. People change, feelings change and life is like a river, always flowing, always moving forward, but never stagnant and forever changing. Happiness comes and goes, but an appreciation for life can be learned and felt forever. Take time to notice and appreciate the little things, smell the roses, watch nature, live in the moment, be yourself. Things WILL get better, it can be a long and arduous journey, but you will eventually make it to the other side and find solace and happiness. Time heals all wounds. There are resources out there and people who love you, even if you feel isolated and alone, you need to reach out to friends, family and society and find comfort and understanding in the people who have felt the same way and still made it. I’m also someone with suicidal thoughts, been like this since 2017. After my parents both passed away in 2019, it’s even harder to fight the thoughts. But then I stumbled upon Move to Heaven and also some of this person’s videos too after that. And true to his words, I actually got the courage to continue my life after watching it. It’s the feeling of “Ah, so I’m not suffering all alone in this world.” And “I’ve been living in loneliness so I don’t want to also die in loneliness”. Thank you. My uncle passed away alone in his apparent a couple of years ago, it took eight months for someone to notice and another three months until we found out. He was estranged from our family and lived in another country from us. After he was found no one contacted anyone in our family and the local authorities threw away all his possessions, we only found out about his death because my aunt googled our old family house where he lived. Someone actually caring would have been nice, he had our contact information in his possession and they could have easily found us if they had tried.

And anyone from the apartment complex staff can't just enter your unit unless it's to make an emergency repair that's affecting another unit. So sad. Years ago I saw a documentary on a company that cleaned up after American AIDS patients died. Many of them had been completely shunned by friends and family and were living alone when the disease killed them. So, when the company cleaned up, all of the victim's personal effects like photos and Mementos of the personal life they had before they got AIDS, were just bagged up and deposited in the dump. I can't imagine my family not wanting all of the photos and videos that I have of all the good times we had together. It just makes me so sad. 😞

I cried so hard when he talked about the young woman who died surrounded by baby clothes. I felt that. I really did because I know exactly how she feels. Not to want to hold a baby in my arms but to hold a dream and have it seen through. That hope and that dream is what she was holding onto in those clothes. It's same in Japan, the term is 'kodokushi'. Stress from work, following strict norms and the cold society...which leads to suicide. This situation is such an ache...they were lonely when they were alive, and so in their death. May they have peace in the other side of the world 🕊️

My roommate died in december 2021 just right before Christmas from septic shock and I felt so lost at that time . I'm so glad that I was able to reach out to both my family , her family and my friends for support and to do a massive clean out of her bedroom. I'm also glad that I was able to keep her cat too because having another living creature to look after kept me going throughout that sad time. Now, I'm paying it forward by helping out my friends and neighbors when they need help.

2:11 - 2:40 This part really hit me. "I wonder what she was thinking in her last moments, when she decided to leave everything behind." I often think this about people who have passed and commited suicide. I sometimes think it would be easier to off myself as well but I will never have nor do I want the strength to do such a task and I recognise that death isnt what I truly want in life until its my time. However hard things have been for me, I really do love life at the end of the day. I hope that I leave or have left something(s) positive when that time comes. There is so much in life BUT I can understand the feeling and thought of just giving it all up to just rest for the final time...to no longer worry and stress over the struggles it takes to make it in this vast, expensive world that seems to lack compassion at even the barest level.... I see people's little stakes or memorials on the side of the highway, or sidealks etc and the very least I do is vocalize "Rest in peace." My hope is they may hear my voice whatever they are and know they haven't been forgotten and there is still someone on earth who doesnt even know them but I will take the time, however little to let them know they have been thought of and missed as a fellow human being. I often wish I could go back to the pure, innocent kid I was and how life was so full of color, excitement, joy and complete obliviousness. Long before I was tainted and learned how the worlds truley operates and how nasty it can get and is still getting. Of course, in the end I recognise that my situation is better than most others and I appreciate being born into a semi stable household. But the dread and sadness I feel for those who have nothing and feel so helpless that they would rather die to attain peace just breaks the very core of my heart. We need more love, compassion and understanding in the world and I try to give that out when I can. I'm no saint and I have my nasty moments but I still try to eliminate all negitivity on a daily basis and maybe I can attain that pure innocence in life once again. Sorry for any grammar errors. I just really felt compelled to write this down and share my thoughts and love with whoever will happen to read this. Someone in the world loves you(Me) and I hope that you may find the answers/help and compassion to keep fighting! Your not alone and there are so many of us out here fighting TOGETHER!

I lived in Seoul for two years bc my dad was stationed there. The Korean people were so kind, so hospitable, they really made me feel welcome there. The thing is they treated you kindly because you were a foreigner and perhaps white (yeah they are truly racist my friend couldn't walk in the evening because the police was behind him like a leech), but they're truly vicious to their kin, I've seen people get extremely severe burnout, (Chingu amiga, a youtuber) and the college students sleep less than 4h a day, their beauty standard is so nauseating and sickening to the point of madness and their ugly desire to get money just to trample over their colleagues.

@@anibalfull I completely agree and it also depends on the area you are living in. Being in Seoul and having his father in the military I'm betting a pretty good apartment and status. I've been living all over Korea for the past 8 years now and am NOT upper or even middle class. As a low class long-term foreigner it's rough. But it got its worst after moving with my husband and son to an area of low income in Suwon even into a basement apartment. Just enough foreigners to give people a bad taste and it has been the worst 2.5 years of my time in Korea. When I say everyday someone had to say some racist remark towards me or worse our Korean American son... I mean literally at least once every single day. Get out of the upper class areas and Korea has a whole other side just like any other country. So happy to be moving in just two weeks far away from here for the sake of our family. On the other hand though, just like anywhere there are amazing people too. Maybe like minding people all flock to the same areas to live, I'm not sure but there are both good and bad. Hopefully the good shines out the bad ^^

Years ago my mother was a teacher in the school where I also studied. She used to teach history in middleschool and in one of the classes, she used to see a set of twin girls..My mom used to notice them so much because until then she had never seen twins who looked exactly like carbon copies..these kids didn't have any friends and they always did things together. It's like one could not be seen without the other..During the recess hours they could always been seen walking along the large school grounds holding hands.. Their father was a doctor while mother was a nurse and they were from different religions. In India, it's a huge deal if people marry from different religions or even castes..Now things are changing but this was in the 90s and even family would disown their children for marrying from different religions. So this couple were also not in touch with their families. Then somehow they fell into some huge debt and was unable to escape the pressure. So this family got some food prepared and poisoned it which ended up in all of them dying..When the school authorities came to know about this tragedy, here is how the headmistress who was a nun responded "Suicides shouldn't be encouraged so no one of the staffs or nuns should go to their funeral"..Imagine how cruel that statement is. I still don't understand how suicide can be ''encouraged'. No one kills themselves because they feel that dying is cool..Its just that facing the death is easier than the intensity of pain they go through.May be if one person existed to whom they could turn to in times of difficulty, they would have abandoned the plan. It's that when man loses hope, everything gets so dark that they can't see what's beyond their eyes and it forces them to take these decisions. How heartbroken must people be when the only option left for them is to end their lives. I was thinking about them when I came across the story of trauma cleaners in 'Move to heaven'..And right now, when I see this video, I am immensely grateful that people like Kim Sae-byul are there in this world. What a great job he is doing to preserve the memories of the ones who has passed and it's a wonderful way to respect that fact they once lived among us. In a way, I feel that the word 'momento collector' is synonymous to kindness and we must appreciate the efforts they do to honor someone who is no longer amongst us.

Call me an asshole, but I believe suicide is the easy way out. No one strong goes through with suicide, however in my experience, I also know it takes balls to fully commit to it. I myself do not condone it, nor will I have sympathy for someone who “couldn’t” handle mental anguish because they didn’t feel like it anymore(Theres a difference between dying of heartbreak and meditated suicide). This doesn’t mean I don’t love my brothers though, but ultimately we are all going to answer for the actions committed in our lifetime.

There aren't big systems of food pantries because there are different social structures, taking handouts has traditionally been perceived as shameful. They have things like 'Big Sister' charities, where a volunteer connects with shut-in young men and encourages them to get out/helps with forms/emotionally supports. The focus is very much on becoming part of society and working. The issue of men falling out of the system and dying alone is recognised as a significant problem in society. Access to welfare supports are there. But people with psych problems often have difficulty negotiating and staying in systems due to depression/apathy/trust issues. It's why most countries over 30% of homeless people have significant mental illness issues.

A friend of my sisters friend hung himself in his restaurant because of the debts he had due to the quarantine. I myself wanted to take my own life, after the loss of my sister in 2018 and because of my bad health. I am grateful that there are people like this men, who provide this service and i am also grateful for the people that take care of the those who deeply need it.

I once was asked by my teacher “would you help feed African children by sending a lot of money” and I said “yes if I could” then he asked “there’s children in our own community who don’t have enough will you ignore them and save those across the sea?” it hit me like a ton of bricks….at some point in my life I was also the recipient of that help. When I watched the KDrama Move to Heaven which was inspired on Things You Left Behind as Mr. Kim Sae-byol wrote in his essay, you'd feel different kinds of emotions. What a gentle and deep soul. The fact that the cleaning up and clearing up is done by someone is in a way a tribute to that life which passed away. Albeit late, some loving thoughts followed them after their passage.

It's the most heartbreaking thing I ever watched on KZbin, being in the middle of youth myself, it's hard to live but let's hope, as this time too shall pass. Courage to those to who are struggling and have the light of hope in your heart. Start with loving yourself!

These are good people. I've read about someone that cleans up their own house spotless before committing suicide, and now I get why. They didn't want to be a bother and die peacefully, even if it's wrong.

I know that he is the guy who wrote Move to Heaven and it's based on his story and experiences as a trauma cleaner.. it's an amazing kdrama and his stories are just so inspiring. This guy is amazing!

the most heart-breaking part was when someone discover his channel and left their address behind and ask "please clean after my leave". they were asked for help, but I understand that he's one man and can't do much to help them while they're still alive. It must be hard on him and this person
