You were more aware of Oscar movies in the '90s because the major studios still made mid-budget movies back then and put their marketing muscle into them. In the mid 2000s, they went all in on IP, and that left the mid-budget movies out in the cold. The indie studios and streamers then grabbed them up, and they don't have the marketing budgets of a major studio. The corporatization of movie studios is to blame, as are audiences for only showing up for the big brands.

I have come to loathe The Acolyte and it's diehard fans that refuse to acknowledge the shows failings, and continue to blame "fans" for it's downfall. They refuse to see that the show was a failure due to budget, viewership, and it's creative shortcomings. No one said you can't enjoy it, but blaming anything else besides the actual issues is madness. Also, I thought the High Republic books ended up doing really badly? Did I miss something?

The Superman haters are going to hate. It won't change the fact that the DCEU is dead and buried. And as much as I loved Henry Cavill as the man of steel, his time as the character is over. Life goes on. People say he didn't have a chance to fully fresh out his character. Two things: one, then that's the fault of Zack Snyder for not fully realizing the character. Two, at least Cavill's Superman was in three movies. And if you count Black Adam post credit scene, he was in three and a quarter. Poor Brandon Routh would have loved to have as much screen time as Superman as Cavill did. David Corenswet is our new man of steel and I'm happy for both him and the new DCU.

6:00 In my honest opinion, Ayo Edebiri as Storm is a TERRIBLE choice, if that rumor is true. I have said many times that Angela Bassett's interpretation of Queen Ramonda was 100% Storm under a different name; beautiful, elegant, statuesque, powerful, regal, commanding, motherly, and will not hesitate to throw hands when needed. Nothing that I've seen from Ayo gives off any of Storm's aura. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of talented no-name actress out there around the world. If Sarah Halley Finn (Marvel's casting director) really needs a known actress, then she already has a solid option that's recently worked under the Disney umbrella; Jodie Turner-Smith. I really, really hope that Sarah Halley Finn takes her time when it comes to casting Storm. Not just going for well-knowns that are readily available, but whoever checks off the most boxes on who Storm is, both visually and presence-wise, no matter where in the world she can find them. She's my all-time favorite fictional character and has been done so dirty by FOX. She's the one character I most want Marvel to get right in live-action.

I think the Russos are just the right guys to oversee X-Men and various other MCU projects going forward. Their movies in this franchise always knock it out of the park, so they clearly know what they're doing. With the DCU, I very much like the idea of Eisa Gonzalez as Wonder Woman. That photo was very well done. As for Star Wars, I'm still not holding by breath about James Mangold's movie until it's actually in production. Then time will tell whether or not Kathleen Kennedy fires him and replaces him. And the box office results are pretty much expected for January. Although, I have to push back on that article saying Presence was a flop. No, it isn't. It cost only $2 million to make and made over $3 million. That's a good opening for a budget that small and it'll make more in the coming weeks. Good movie too.

24:13 The fact Star wars and Marvels movies are usually amongst the biggest movies of the year, but the Disney+ shows from 2024 (like Acolyte, Agatha All along etc) are all have way less watch minites than the overall top 10 streaming, just shows there is a big mainstream disconnect or lack of interest in seeing this franchises on television at the moment
@ludwigvanbeethoven84482 күн бұрын
Im not sure if that's the case, relatively speaking. Mainly because of the specific special instances of each show mentioned. Im struggling to re-find the secondary source data I was looking at earlier but I think the initial viewing numbers for Acolyte was comparable to the other Star Wars shows but they took an absolute nose dive, which might be more an indicator of audiences judging the quality of the show rather than SW TV in general. As for Agatha, I dont think it ever had mass marketing as a tent pole MCU show, which was fine as it was crafted on a low budget to tell a story that would be enjoyed by its target audience. And it seems to have achieved that. If it was a flagship show it might suggest yes there's a lack of appetite for MCU TV on D+ but for a spin off that wasn't heavily marketed and recieced positive reviewers it's done more than well enough for its budget. Sometimes even Disney can make shows that are for target audiences, if the budget is right. Im not saying you are 100% wrong, I suspect there is audience fatigue at both franchises TV shows (im increasingly less excited for each new one as they so often have failed to deliver) but I don't think we can draw such a definitive conclusion off this data set for the reasons above.

The data - on viewership minutes, drop off trends and costs - supports exactly the same conclusions Kristian has been talking about since it aired. And yet youll find several thousand people on twitter today stating the exact opposite as its not been explained. I dont blame Deadline for reporting a bare fact - the fact it was second most watched viewership minutes - but the big mainstream Star Wars commentators who just shared the article without comment as if speaks for itself frustrated me. I think you have a duty to do some due dilligence and contextualisation when reporting on it if you are a big channel. Its refreshing coming to the comments section here under this video and people seem to 'get it' re. looking at the relative figures to other Star Wars shows and the relative budgets.

The outlook is also pretty bad when you crunch the numbers on "cost per minute aired" too. Acolyte cost at least $700k per minute of screen time. Unfortunately it's just a data reporting story in (Deadline I think it was) that made it a talking point. Thousands of people saw "Two billion minutes" and "2nd most watched show" and leapt to conclusions ill supported by the very same data that they had been lied two about the cancellation and it was taken by them - without merit of grounds - as conclusive proof the show was cancelled due to an online hate campaign. It's the sort of stort where people see a headline out of context and then it's going to be fuel to the fire of any online discussion about Star Wars for weeks, months maybe years to come.

Acolyte was great. Episode 3 was problematic enough to get it cancelled. I went back and watched it without watching episode 3 and found it to be a much better show where admittedly my memory fills in some of the gaps left in episode 7(which replaces episode 3 in my mind). The finale was great, and I don't think they need a season 2. I would like a spinoff that's truly Sith based and 0 Jedi involvement, unless Venestra tries to go rogue and figure things out on her own and dies later? We also need more Plagueis the wise... Maybe he kills Mae early on? Because unlikely they want too much to do with that character, and the actress may not want to return, so use her stunt double that she was fighting in Acolyte. Manny's character was excellent
