A separate note of thanks here. Dearest Kate, I discovered your channel in December of 24, right before I discovered that my cancer (Hodgkin’s lymphoma) had returned for the 4th time. Watching your videos and listening to you express your joy in your art has been a balm to my soul. I taught myself to quilt in 2017, but I had to stop in 2019 when I was first diagnosed. Last fall, I pulled out a top and finished quilting it, and rediscovered the therapeutic joy in stitching a creation. I’m a machine quilter, and I use my stationary longarm to quilt. My style is a blend of traditional and modern, and I like to fuse both together in my quilts. I’ve fought my disease 3 times, so I know there’s no reason I can’t beat it a fourth time. Over the past few years, I’d buy quilt kits of the patterns and fabrics to make specific projects. I worry about having the strength and stamina to finish them all before it’s my time. I’ve learned from you that all the unfinished projects don’t matter, it’s the joy in the process that matters the most. My personal motto is ‘Just keep stitching.” Thank you so much for sharing your home and life with us. You are living my dream of a quiet cottage in the country with a garden, a crazy goose, and cats. You have a new fan in the US, from northern Illinois in the Midwest. I wish you peace, health, joy in the new year. ~Les

In 2020 I started quilting 100% from my stash. My goal was to use the entire stash, and by the end of February 2025 I'll be done. It will be something like a hundred quilts, most of them approximately 50" by 70". It's deeply satisfying and in a wonderful surprise to me, has significantly increased my design skills

For the adding machine strips: several together for lap or baby quilts, three together for placemats, several together side by side making it long for a table runner. If you still have some, you could sew together and make more cushions for your cabin.

OOOh... just a suggestion for you and Anna Kate.... how about selling packs of scraps etc off in your shop and seeing what people make with the pieces and semi-finished materials? I know it's wonderful to have a "clear out and look through" all of our many unfinished projects but it can become overwhelming as we pop stuff back with a long list of things to finish. I think this idea would be a winner and so nice for the Lime Green Sofa members to receive some of your bits n bobs. Love from The Netherlands xxxxxx

Hi from Colorado! I am retired and 70 years old. I must have at least 100 projects in plastic boxes and hundreds of yards of fabric, all fabulous and bought when on sale. Most of my quilts are for Quilts for Kids and Quilts of Valor. I realize I will never fiinish all the quilts I want to make before I die, but it doesn't bother me one bit. I know it will make someone or some people very happy to either buy at my estate sale or have the fabric given to them by my children. Imagine my friends realizing what a hoarder I was! It makes me smile just thinking about it. I think I will take your theme and run with it in 2025 - use what I have! Keep the videos coming; I enjoy them so much.

I have two things I very much want to finish! My brother was paralyzed in a car accident last April, and life changed dramatically. I'd just begun learning to sew and quilt, and embellish things with beads and embroidery. I had only just discovered Kate's magical world of creativity when life came tumbling down around me. Many projects were left unfinished due to no time or energy to do anything but care for him at home. All I could do was watch Kate in rare spare moments as part of my Self Care. Happily, things have settled down a bit now; we have a care routine, and the anger and depression are lifting so I can tackle unfinished projects with joy again. I have a cuddle-size potato chip quilt that simply needs its backing & quilting, and that's going to be my first Get It Done project. My brother needs a colorful quilt over his legs when we take him to his Dr appts, so it's for him! After that, I'll finish a quilted batik tablerunner that simply needs its borders, backing and quilting. That project will soon brighten my dining table with its bright colors and embroidered & beaded embellishments. Thanks for getting me through a very rough year, Kate and friends on the Lime Green Sofa!

Just a note for your brother - and yourself - please find a Feldenkrais practitioner. In -person is a great start, plus there are many free online classes. Like Kate mentions, hand sewing is great therapy, and Feldenkrais lessons focus on the remarkable benefits of going slowly, in small ways, finding what is easy, making the impossible possible, the possible easy, then the easy elegant. Learning to be observant of yourself without competition, and the awareness it brings, is so calming and restorative. Much like using your body’s box of scraps and unfinished projects, you can form new brain pathways that are now useful, sort of quilting neuroplasticity !

One more comment after I watched this video again: Concerning the adding machine paper strips, I started thinking about your pond and lake and thought, "Wouldn't it be lovely to make the blue strips be the water on the bottom of the quilt?" You could incorporate any green you might have, together with yellow in making some log cabins next, as the grass, going on point across the next row up. I'm thinking of a sunrise or sunset over a rippling pond that has grass by it. The next row going up could be pale oranges, if you have any, and then add your already-made red/pink strips on top of that. Depending on the length of the quilt, you could even add some darkish cloud strips at the very top. Find a super picture of a sunset or sunrise over water that you like and make it awesome. I don't think your strips would be good for babies because Liberty is just a bit dull for that (just my opinion).

Use it on a chair. So you can decide which mood you would prefer.... One day the blue mood and the other day you use it turned in the pink mood🩵🩷😊 Use it maybe in the small cabin 😘

"She who dies with the most fabric wins" . I will probably win because in my stash I have at least 70 years of fabric I have purchased over those years and that's not even counting the fabric I inherited from my mother in law who was born in 1887. I'm not embarrassed because this year I have discovered English Paper Piecing while watching The Last Homely House - it gives me a reason to have needle and thread in my hand through my waking hours and use this fabric. in my stash.

The Quilted Forest channel does an annual project of the month where she picks 12 unfinished projects of varying completeness. She puts each in its own box with fabric needed to finish, randomly numbers each from 1-12, then each month draws the number of a project to complete. She gets so excited to see what she’s drawn and really does finish the project. It seems like a great way to gently force one’s self to put a project to bed. I enjoy your channel.

Has to be baby quilts. 3years ago I did the same thing. Determined not to buy any more fabric. Had to use what I had. Didn’t think I could stick to it having such a passion for fabric. But so far, so good. Not so much in the way of unfinished projects, as just a horde of beautiful fabric. Made 20 baby quilts last year alone for charity and one full size quilt as a gift, also bags. At 76 I know I’m never going to be able to achieve as much as I had planned but will keep working on it. I agree with you about hand stitching helping to clear the mind. I’m sure by the year end you will feel very pleased with all you’ve accomplished, using up all that beautiful Liberty fabric. Keep up the good work Kate. Wishing you a very happy new year.

I decided years ago to lean into my creative flow and not care about project monogamy. Then I started losing track of my projects, so I made a notebook. It's got an index, and each project reads like a journal. When I go to put it away, I take precise notes and then when it resurfaces I know where I left off. It's covered in homely house stickers! I'm absolutely a process quilter. The steps and motions are important to me, rather than the finished product.

Oh, I hope you take that log cabin - cushion size now - half in pinks, half in blues, and make a full size quilt. I am a big fan of log cabin quilts!!! The long strips of adding machine pieced ones I can really see making a quick baby boy and other pink a baby girl quilt without too much more work! Such fun opportunities you have ahead of you with what's been started. I'm still laughing about the getting ahead of yourself one...definitely put growing lavender, harvesting and drying lavender on your 2025 plans! Love you, Mavis.

I'm accidentally doing "use what you have 2025" because a couple of ladies from my church de-stashed their fabric by passing them on to me. What I love about it is the huge variety I've suddenly got, fabrics or colours or prints that I'd never normally buy, it's really pushing my creative boundaries. I'm looking forward to following your 2025 journey!❤

I have just used a fabric I have had in my stash for 30 years to recover some dining room chairs that I thrifted from a charity shop recently. Each seat has a different bird motif. I love how they look. I would make the adding machine tape into one large piece of fabric and cut it up to use to make different size knitting project bags with a double drawstring to colossal them. They are very popular with we knitters and crocheters.

I have been working on using what I have for several years. I inherited fabric from my mother and I added that to my stash. I cut the fabric into usable size squares - 5", 4" etc.- and then find designs that I can use these fabrics with. I make scrappy quilts and donate them to the Linus Project. I find that it is challenging and fun to make the fabrics and colors that I have work together into a pleasing design.

Great idea to use what you already have and not go out and purchase more. I don’t make New Year’s resolutions anymore and years ago my resolution was to not make resolutions. As I watched this, I was knitting on a wool cap, with literally four unfinished knitting projects sitting around me. I started this around Christmas, because a really nice woman gave me a skein of yarn that her late mother had spun and dyed. How we can relate to your pondering here.

I have a lot of fabric, which, when I bought it, I loved it. I still love it, but I've decided that I can't enjoy them if they are folded up in storage. So I have started making quilts for a church charity. The other quilters use a lot of dark, traditional fabrics. My stash is all colorful, contemporary prints and solids. I'm hoping that after I donate a few more, I can influence the other quilters to use bright colors, too, and not be afraid that the colors they choose "won't be right" (whatever that means!) So I'll be joining you in using what I have. I know I'll have a lot of fun using my wonderful stash of colorful fabrics!

Anything that you truly don't want to finish, you could hand to a friend to finish. You could also put them each into a paper bag and put it in your shop for sale, like a grab bag surprise. Or perhaps auction for charity? Perhaps some projects could be finished... Once a long time ago I traded projects with a quilting friend. She finished mine and I finished hers. Then we switched back. It was so much fun to see how she brought life to my unfinished project. Anyway.. have fun, enjoy whatever you choose to do with your 2025 projects... And good luck with only using what you have.

Thank you for another lovely visit. I have been quilting and sewing for more than 50 years. Yes, indeed, I collected hundreds of yards of cotton fabric in this wonderful era. In 2020 I downsized to my tiny house where I live full time. It is 12 ft X 24 ft (approx 3.65 meters X 7.31 meters) with no added storage. It was most difficult to part with my treasured fabric and books. I kept twenty 18 gallon totes packed with fabric. I enjoy taking the various unfinished projects and sewing them into 12 to 18 inch blocks. That is the current goal and also using only fabric I currently have. I have not purchased any new fabric except for specific requests by family members and muslin ... one can always use quality muslin. Have a colorfully delicious 2025.

Those hand-stitched square block strips are SO pretty. Lavender bags will be fun. So many ideas :) You could sew 3 together and treat each one as a block. You could cut them into half square triangles and sew a pink to a blue perhaps. It would be pretty just sewing all of the strips together into one nice size baby quilt. Yeah, I wouldn't be embarrassed one little bit either. It just means you've been creative and using up scraps at the same time. I think the blues on the design wall will be pretty sewn together even if you don't do a full color wash. A scrappy sampler quilt could be fun to do with stray blocks.

A lot of people are doing a year of using what they have. I think it is a great idea. I am joinig in as well. 🙂 Especially when you are older, some of us have accumulated so many things. We ladies at our knitting cafè speak frequently of this. Some of us have so many sweaters, that we started to knit and give away makes for good causes. This year I am also attempting to sew up all my patchwork squares and unfinished quilts. I am in the same situation as you Kate. I have a lot of different piles with already pre cut squares. Last night I woke up at three o´clock, thinking I could sew a new bedcover out of one pile and then make curtains out of another pile of squares for my sewing room. Then I thought of making cushion covers for my dining room benches (the sitting cushions) and make matching pillows to put on the benches as well. Another idea was, to cut up all the fabric I will never use for making clothes or quilting and just make strips. Sew the strips together and roll them up into balls for later use of making braided rugs or crochet ruggs and mats. Huggs from the Schurwald Forest, Germany.
