It is tremendous stupidity... but also an incredible accolade for the actor... although, if someone spat on me, I'd have a hard time saying "thank you for your compliment" as opposed to just dropping them.

Yes I am so impressed by Eliza Butterworth. Harry is a fantastic actor but I do see some of his personality in Aethulwold. There’s no hint of Eliza in Lady Aelswith.

He is one of the best characters in the show, and the actor really does a superb job with him. You can't help but like and dislike him at the same time, with equal pity and disgust. That's very finely done. He literally stole the groveling scene, what an amazing development in just a few minutes. I think it is my favourite scene in the whole series, and I like this show very much. The other great character for me is Alfred. It's so unsympathetic that you start hating him but at the same time you understand that, in a weird way, perhaps that is how things have to be done. A very strong character played by another fantastic actor

Personally I feel like they wasted his character this season. It would've been amazing to see him rise in power and fight uhtred. They could've shifted attention off of athelwold and more on Cnut and Bloodhair instead of killing one of them. I like the show and this character A LOT but I'll just have to swallow this pill and keep watching

Maybe We are like that! Sometimes I wanted to punch him, sometimes I wanted to hug him. That is not fickle, that is responding to a character on a screen. And to evoke that response takes very fine acting

Some truly top-notch actors on this show. David Dawson (Alfred) made one of the strongest performances of any character I've seen in the last several years. It's rare to feel so sad over a character dying, especially when it's known to be inevitable to the audience.

Growing up in the 70s and from a young age, being privileged enough to watch series like Macbeth, The Borderers 💜, the original televised Poldark, I Claudius and others, I developed a deep love for series that come out of the U.K. This piece of work and ALL of the people who are involved in its making, join the aforementioned series on My own personal list of who I believe to be the elite. Æthelwold is 10 lbs of AWESOME squeezed into a 5 lb bag!!! He's always had Uhtred's back... Ever since last season, when Alfred sentenced them to GROVEL before the whole town, and he did for them both. Saving Uhtred the humiliation! That was a great scene, he did it like a BOSS! 😜
