As an ex-Porsche technician, always replace all the coil packs together. Really common fault on 986’s, I recall there were at leat seven different coil revisions. Don’t over tighten the screws! Your starter motor is “dragging”, needs an overhaul. The replacement wheels are far nicer, the original set is rarer as none liked them when ordering the car…

I'm not a mechanic so excuse my stupid question... but why would they put foam as a water quide instead of plastic like on 987? I suppose 987 doesn't fit on Jonny's car but maybe he could use some kind of impregnation spray to make a protective layer and prolong the life of the foam?

What a great little car and kudos for doing as much as you can yourself. I have a 1977 911S, owned it for over 10 years and I do everything I can on it myself. Engine rebuild, Suspension, Brakes, Interior etc. They are great cars to work on and there's a multitude of good info online along with good rebuild & servicing manuals etc. Pelican Parts in the US is highly recommended for their tutorials. Have fun and looking forward to seeing this Boxster FINALLY getting washed!😁
@S50Sinner
@S50Sinner Күн бұрын
There's something really impressive about your ability to resist the urge to wash the car until the project is complete. Also bears mentioning that all weather is Boxster weather, you just need to channel your inner Walter Rohrl, if he can do it in a 400hp Lancia then we can do it in our 200hp Boxsters.

Finding this particular project extremely helpful and well timed as I have in the last 2 years, inherited from my dear old late Dad, his 2.5 manual 1999 Boxster with the same paint code but with savannah trimmings. I too, share pretty much every issue you’ve come across, misfire, poor idle etc with the most recent and most annoying one, finding it had been pissing it’s pants at the slightest hint of moisture from our atmosphere for an indeterminate amount of time 🙄 I managed to get my eyes on your Boxster in its current location only last weekend and the progress you have made is inspiring. Looking forward to the rest of the journey. Kyle. CMTMB.

@ it really is a sweet sweet car previously owned by a real SSG. And thank you for the contact! I shall store it in my bookmarks for a literal rainy day. Thankfully, the 98 inch thick bit of foam that resides under the floor mat did its job of preventing a command module tsunami. Leaks traced. Holes in foam repaired. Drain holes cleared. Carpets dried. Car cover applied. Bullet dodged.

Lovely work - I definitely prefer the wheels you've swapped on. I guess they are like mini 996 era turbo twists? They are surprisingly similar to the wheels it came with but the little changes make all the difference. I've been eyeing up 996 911s and 986 boxsters for ages. I think the value of the boxster will tempt me in the end!

Coincidentally did my 987 roof a few weeks ago after both of the plastic parts Eliott talks about in this vid snapped while aborad in Italy. Ordered Porsche OE plastic ball joint holders for the tips of the pushrods at £7 a side, then swapped them onto the old arms. Took about an hour. Easy job for someone to do themselves if they feel like it, plenty of tutorials online.

I can honestly say I’ve never done it but it must be satisfying buying a old Car like this with Character and having great people fix it up and bring it back to life. Still on the side of having a little bit of mechanical knowledge is dangerous to my absolute minimum knowledge to not attempt things. 😂 jacking a Car up would give me a sweat. My friend can completely disassemble and reassemble Cars perfect. His last major job was on his A8 That needed a engine life for access Audi wanted £5k to replace a £288 part. He did it himself and replaced other parts while he was at it for £350 and knows it’s done right. Rightly your paying for the absolute pain and time of doing it as the Car sat for a week in a mess. I seen the pictures and just said I’d be crying. Good for Johnny, he went back home happy. I’m going to fit the word “Gash” in to a conversation this weekend. 😂

Excellent video as ever Jonny. Full marks to Elliot for the job and, footage. As the driver of an Alfa spider with manual hood, more and more I question the logic for so much electronic gadgetry. Not so much the little Boxster but, more recent cars on the whole. I see cars with electric door opening, boot opening etc. For what gain? More weight, more to go wrong and bugger all (if any) saving in time. Cars are getting fatter and heavier and I can't fathom why 90% of it is progress, not regress.

I was wondering if anyone had tried something like this, sounds like a great inexpensive way to future proof them! Seems a bit strange they made them out of foam in the first place, I know it reduces weight, cost and probably easier to fit foam but I would at least expect a decent plastic material rather than foam, your solution seems to use the old and add the strength of the bed liner sounds like a win to me!

I agree, the replacement wheels are better (albeit marginally, the originals are also great) than the old set. If I had a garage of some kind where I could house something like this, I would also go for either a 986 Boxter, or perhaps the first generation Cayman (987) to save me the bother of having to deal with the soft -top.

Very timely episode for me, my fellow Jonathan Smith. Now I've done the drain holes (nearside one was completely blocked) the car is still steaming up but hopefully it's just some residual moisture in the carpet/sound deadening. I much prefer the new 17" twists to the previous 'tea-towel holders', but my favourite OEM 17s are the Sport Classics - I have a spare set of these, if you're ever in Aberdeen, Jonny. Love these videos. I can relate to them so easily. Lucky you, the sacrificial plastic end on the roof’s pushrod worked. On mine it didn’t and the gearbox thingy had its cog damaged and jammed. Roof stuck half open. Needed a new thingy. Then 9 months later same again on the other side. Other things you could be facing - the rubber mounting grommets for the steering wheel airbag bracket perish resulting in the horn sounding when braking, not embarrassing at all…, the seatbelts failing to retract and/or locking preventing wearing, intermittent fault on electric seat back adjustment. As for the wheels, I had the original 1997 asymmetric ones which I despised and replaced with some 18” ones from a slightly younger Cayman. Much nicer.

The wheel question is somewhat superfluous as for me by far the best wheel on a 986 is the 17” Sport Classic (not the 18” available on later cars and 911s). They aren’t very common and you certainly wouldn’t expect to get a set for free though, so what you have is fine.

Sorry to hear about the corrupted sd card, might be a pirated one - used to be lots of those around. In my semi-pro photography days, I used cameras with two memory card slots (Canon dslrs in my case) set up to duplicate so there was always a main (RAW for maximum quality) & a backup card (JPEG for faster distribution to media desks), and exclusively used Lexar or SanDisk cards only bought from reliable shops to avoid pirated copies. Kingston was a slightly cheaper brand whose quality was supposed to be close to the two market leaders but I never used those (there were concerns about some of the cheaper brands cards corrupting as well with cheap components).

You forgot the boxster “chop” at the beginning. On earlier cars with plastic back window you put the roof half way down, then get out & push the window inwards to make it fold properly. I normally do the Box chop, but couldn't do it for this intro sequence. Fear not.

Got a tidy boxster. Cost £2,000 several years ago. Selling it soon as i use it less and less. Just MOT'D no advisories.

996 Generation 911's have coil covers, I guess because they get more wheel spray on a 996 than you would on a 986, you can even get swanky aftermarket carbon fibre ones if you hunt about a bit. They fit on all the engines of this generation car, both 996 & 986, you can see the mounting holes on the cam covers in this video, a pair of M6 bolt holes. As coil packs are so renowned for failing, and bolts corroding in, it's not the silliest idea ever to fit a pair.

20:05 After changing the coil packs and you restarted it, what was that party horn blower type noise? Is there a pulley / belt that needs replacing? EDIT: A perfect noise for your birthday, BTW 🥳

Great choice on the wheels, although the ones it came on are also porsche original wheels, they somehow look like cheap replicas or something from halfords in their style.
