The old memory isn't what it was but, back around the times when these were active there was a Race at Brands Hatch where these were raced in wet conditions. They were undrivable in those conditions... all over the shop sideways and rarely in a straight line. Spectacular. A perfect demonstration of the term "Pendulous Porsches". They don't make 'em like those anymore.

This looks so well engineered, it's a true recreation and as true as possible to the original. Given the multitude of GT40 reps there must be a market for this... and as you fit in Jonny could be one for the collection, with a Gulf livery!

Understand their goals of pursuing the power figures of the original with the turbos but honestly I think its current form suits me wonderfully - classic looks, real race car handling, 270 HP in 940kg while looking like a BAMF? I remember being stood behind the “red and white one” (sorry I can’t remember the chassis number and team) at Hampton Court when it was fired up …. Petrolhead nirvana, soaking up the sounds, smells and feeling it generated. My favourite 917 memory was standing at Goodwood on a sunny Saturday afternoon, next to the Steve McQueen car. There was a guy in period correct overalls, shades on, leaning against a stanchion …. Chad McQueen stood next to his dads car, for me that was cooler than a penguins pecker on a cold day. I’m buying some lottery tickets.

Having owned and competed in a GT40 replica this work of love is superb! If you like the GT40 you like the 917! I think you are pitching it to cheaply when a Restomod is generally around £300 to £350K. If you succeed with the flat 12 I would say £450K to £500k as a turnkey is realistic and would attract collectors who simply can't buy one anywhere else. Perhaps explore a run of 25 with someone like Tuthill Porsche or David Brown?

I know where your coming from with this as i was thinking when watching the video wheres Tiff needel when you need a car ragging round a track as Chris is his younger equal in my eyes :)

@@SnakeyUk08 there aren't many people who can drive like those guys. I've never really considered the similarities between tiff and Chris, but they are quite similar now I come to think of it. One review of Chris' has been playing in my mind whilst watching this, and that is the video he did with the Alfaholics GTA. I'm seeing that video, with this car and a whole other level of tomfoolery!

Amazing that 2 guys with knowledge and passion can replicate and even improve something that a full race car manufacturer originally built. Love that, the 917 is an incredible beautiful machine and this recreation would make Porsche proud, great job guys

I’m rooting for them to get a real F12 engine. That will be glorious to hear at full throttle on regular roads

... or to make one out of two flat sixes. It wouldn't be the first time connecting two engines together has been done. Drag racers did it in the 1960s, someone made a single crankcase V-16 out of two small-block Chevrolets in the 1990s, and in 2017, XVI Power produced and marketed a V-16 made from two Chevrolet LS V-8s, which may still be available today.

@@vidiupload4174 There's also the famous V12 LS engine where a bunch of aussies cut a Chevy V8 and plastered it onto another Chevy V8 to give it 12 cylinders

Bravo! Lucky you...In 2006, I was fortunate to be allowed to drive an original 1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6 - and it terrified me ! With that ultra-light construction, and tiny tube frame - it looked so spindly, and dangerous. But, on the road, it was a revelation. However, the race spec engine was way to peaky and highly tuned to be usable on the road, and the NOISE ! Every pebble bouncing in the arches, the vibrations rattling every surface of the incredibly thin bodywork, and of course, no silencers with the straight through race exhaust. Wow - I drove about 5 kms in the city, and I still get goosebumps every time I think about it. I can only imagine what it would have been like on the track.

Jonny, how this channel doesnt have several million subscribers is beyond me. So many people claim to be "car guys" yet your channel is still somewhat of a minnow compared to some other channels. And that 917...wow! The job the gents have done is truly remarkable and the closing scene is that light shows just how beautiful that car is. Kudo's mate on another great vid!

We have a company in Detroit USA called RCR who makes these, or used to make these, but the chassis is not tube it’s plate aluminum mono structure. This icon 917 is truly artwork.

I've been in LOVE with the 917 from a very early age, 5 yo I think. My first 917 was a Tyco Curve Hugger slot car. In the sky blue and orange Gulf colors. Such a sexy racecar!

For me, the most beautiful and iconic racing car ever, and I had the privilege, I am 68 years old, to see them at Le Mans in the early´s 70 (70 and 71) precisely 917 K´s Herrmann/Attwood and Marko/Van Lennep, if I´m not wrong. Thank you Mr.Jonny Smith for the video.
