Have been around cars all my life, it’s something I will never forget, around 20 years ago seeing them fire up one of these at Goodwood! You make it’s sounds simple, but in reality is waking an animal from hibernation. One of the greatest automotive creations of all time, without doubt the greats Porsche
@bloqk162 жыл бұрын
Yep! When considering the development issues Porsche had with its 3-liter prototype engine in 1969; the 4.5 then 5 liter, flat 12 engine was a marvel from the get-go; just as long as the engine was kept under 8.2K RPMs . . . at least that's what Derek Bell told in an interview years later (YT video post by 'peterwindsor'), as that what the 917 design engineer Norbert Singer told him. As Bell related Singer saying the engine would _let go_ at 8.2K RPMs.

I worked for Porsche. What a thrill. I was in Atlanta and there was a 917 #21 in the main gallery. During a short break I was over at the car and taking a few photos. I went to the door and it opened. Yes I climbed into the most iconic Porsche of all time. I took it in for about 3-4 minutes, which seemed like hours before the security guard came. over and asked me to remove myself from the car. I told him it was unlocked. Back to class. About a half hour later three very German suits came into my class and asked me to come with them. They asked me what I was doing with the 917. I explained. I was told to not go into that car again. At lunch one of the Germans came up to me and asked me to come with him. We went to the elevator and went to the lowest floor. He showed me around and I got to see some of the most amazing cars ever built. He was very nice and I thanked him for the tour. I would do it over again. Got back to my dealership in LA and was chewed out by my GM. Then asked how was it. Can anyone spare 40-50 M .... I will let you drive it every other weekend.

First turn over engine on the starter to get the oil pressure up in the engine. Then push all buttons in. Then one person works choke and the throttle and one person in drivers seat turns key. As soon as it fires which will be almost at once the driver takes over . He can see all the dials. About 1500 to 2000 revs. Do NOT blip the throttle. When cold the oil pressure is enormous.. It can off the clock. Watch the oil pressure. Run it up to about 50/60 degrees and you are ready to go. this could takes 5 minutes. or more On cold day don't do it at all or make sure you have an electric oil heater on the oil tank and preferably a blow heater on the gear box. to warm it all. BUT the best trick of all is convert it to electronic ignition. You don't need to squirt anything down the injection trumpets. It starts on the button on 12 and stays on 12. Changing 24 plugs fairly often is a pain. The old thing ran art Goodwood this year. No problem except the rain. MF.
