In recreational mathematics that is called a magic square. At 6:36 you can see Darren is palming the 45 rice and only uses 2 fingers to pretend to get the rice out of the bowl then drops it back in and afterwards turns his hand sideways to drop the 45 grains out of his palm. The only hard part is to get the dice to roll the 45 in the first place. Each roll only has a 1/6 chance to get to 4 and also for the 5, so 1/6 x 1/6 = 1/36 chance. He got it on the 3rd roll so that was a 3/36 chance or 1/12th chance to get it....but he could have gone a few times to get a better chance, but that was pretty lucky. The greatest part is to take these to very basic things a magic square and a simple palm and turn it into this amazing trick. Love it!

After the event, all of the people who Darren interacted with throughout the show were talking with each other an hour after the show had ended and ended up leaving together. Looked like a group of cheap actors. Also one of the alleged actresses, during one of Derren's acts, was told to close her eyes, but she closed her eyes before she was actually told to close them

@@FreedomOfTħought I've seen him live a couple of times, and I used to think the same. But the way he selects an audience member is quite unique. He flings something like a stuffed monkey or a frizbee or beachball into the audience and then asks whoever catches it to fling it again, sometimes onto the upper balcony. After 2 or 3 flings it can hit anyone. And even if they were actors, do you think they'd all be seen in public socialising after the show. Yup. Shook a few in bowl with two fingers.....had the 45 grains already cupped in hand. Also....he practiced numbers from 11 to 66 (all possible Die combinations rolled), that whatever number was chosen, he used a 16 place number grid, or magic square, where n=4, Discrete Mathematics (different formulas for differing amounts of squares) and knew what numbers to write for '45' to equal same number (Magic Sum = 's') in any of those combinations. Like he said, he knows math and mastered it as applied to many tricks, in this case where n=4 of a magic square. Impressive memory, but that's why he is a professional. He had to know big boys birth date to calculate ahead of time all possible combos with birth date on bottom row, and adjusted numbers accordingly. Still impressive memorizing all that, and quickly based on number chosen at the moment. But that's one of his specialty's/gifts.

6:38 pause and slow it down to 0.25 speed you will see that he does not pick up any rice out of the bowl. He turns his hand so that you can not see the previously counted 45 grains of rice that slipped onto the table through his jacket. There has to be some way of loading the dice to show 45. James Corden's birth date can be seen on Wikipedia et al. The magic square is very cleverly done, adding to 45 in multiple directions and configurations. The 45 grains of rice were not taken from the bowl, but were prepared beforehand. Very professionally presented, and very entertaining. And finally, the numbers can be memorised using a trick from Derren's book, "Tricks of the Mind": Lice alight on the lace of my shoe, etc. Just can't resist the temptation to have go at explaining it..
@sheyshah28482 жыл бұрын
There is a magnet under the edge of his book, hence his specific placement of the bowl over that edge of the book for the third roll. The dice, as you guessed it, are magnetized. Talent show caliber presentation, he just has the time and money to practice it a thousand times a day lol.

Oh yes he was well caught picking up the rice, dropping some back in the bowl and leaving exactly 45 in his hand, instead of picking exactly 45 from the bowl straight away, you could see him counting the rice back in the bowl, in about a second, such a big give away, and every one knows, grains of rice are so easy to count.
@yoyo219266 жыл бұрын
@@Bpg5012trick yeah but how did he get 45 grains of rice in the first place?
@d.s.62686 жыл бұрын
@@Bpg5012trick that's not what he did. he never needed to count anything. He picked up pre-prepared 45 grains of rice from his pocket or somewhere on his body (camera happened to cut for a second there although I'm sure he didn't plan that), stashed them between his back two fingers and his hand, and when he puts the bowl on the table - those 45 grains of rice are already in his right hand which is already clinched... He then just picks up some rice with the tips of his thumb and top fingers only to drop it back in as if he was dropping "excess" rice in his "count" to 45 grains. And obviously what he had left in his hand are those pre-prepared 45 grains which he drops by finally releasing his back fingers which were clinched the entire time. Really, the entire trick is getting the dice to land on 45, probably using some magnet, but still impressive imo as I can't notice him activating it.

He has actually only done two little tricks that any decent magician could do: 1) Forced a "selection" (in this case a number) on someone & 2) Basic sleight of hand; the rest is window-dressing. He starts by knowing JC's birthday, adds the date together to get 45, build and memorises a number grid based on the number 45 of which one line is JC's birthday, all well in advance of the show, then it is simply a matter of convincing JC that they are randomly using the number 45. Pushing a number etc on someone, in this case 45, is bread and butter to magicians; the rest is memorised well before hand. The rice is a different trick, basic sleight of hand, and actually proves that Derren knew the number 45 was to be used before they started if that wasn't obvious enough already.
@hornfarrierservice95262 жыл бұрын
There’s a magnet in the corner of the paper pad. The first two rolls are in the center were the clip is. The third roll the bowl is placed on the upper right corner of the pad. You can see the dice snap to “45”.

Whilst everybody is reacting to the numbers, Derren puts the pencil in his pocket and fishes out 45 grains of rice in place. The camera cuts away, but you can see whilst he is placing the bowl on the table, he is rearranging the grains in his other hand. He then literally dips his fingertips in the bowl and flicks them towards his palm to make it look like he is picking the grains out. Serious props though, the guy is a genius when it comes to charisma and misdirection.
