We in the U.S. have been left in the dark about the qualities of democratic socialism. The grade school and university curricula are set by the 1% to make sure that we do not understand what is happening to us in the workplace and why. Capitalism succeeded in the 1950s only because we were untouched by the war. The breakdown of capitalism's promise for a reasonably stable and reliable life style has disappeared for the majority of workers.

@pigofapilot19 жыл бұрын
pjamesbda Exactly,I'm astounded that a system (corporate capitalism) that has plunged the world into two great depressions is allowed to continue unchecked. Democracy was hijacked by corporate capitalism long ago and wealth now trumps democracy. Are the politicians asleep on the job or just puppets of the corporations? Democracy was put in place to protect the masses from the excesses via the ballot box. For that reason, corporate capitalists fall over themselves to finance politicians and 'buy' elections. They fear true democracy like the plague.
@pjamesbda9 жыл бұрын
pigofapilot1 Absolutely - - redistricting and voter requirements are some other tools. But as you point out, by far and away the most effective tool is the "futility factor". Creating a atmosphere of utter futility drives people into a sense of despair. And then, they just give up. That is, after a fashion the first step. We absolutely DO need to "give up" on a failed system model. And instead of this idea of fixing it (which by the way, is another tool - remember the conserv. base saying the ACA just needed "fixing") - we need to throw out for profit health care, public utilities and all the other infrastructure issues we've already F'ing well paid for 2 or 3 times over. We need to understand we have rights; to work, to have clean shelter we can afford, health car and descent nutrition. These are non-negotiable...period.

Lenin was way more than just good ideas. He was a profound Marxist theoretician, both in the broader sense, but especially in the dialectics between theory, practice and organisation. He was unmatched in understanding the development of Russian society and what needed to be done. Unfortunately, The civil war, which was armed and defended by the strongest imperialist powers of the time, the destruction of most Bolshevik cadres and the dispersal of the remaining ones, famine, demoralisation, Stalin’s degeneration and struggle against the party’s revolutionary wing, Lenin’s incapacitation and eventual death, opening it up to just anyone and and murder, underdevelopment and mass social and economic dislocation caused by 7 years of war. There is so much unjustly blamed on Lenin and much of his work was either destroyed, misunderstood or distorted by the Stalinist counterrevolution. At 13:33 “people are afraid of Marxism…they think of Lenin they think of Pol Pot they think of Mao”… People think of those monsters, and they’d damn well better, because history has demonstrated time and time again, unequivocally, that those are the sorts of horrendous creatures that emerge, and theirs are the monumentally ghastly sorts of deeds that proliferate, whenever marxism is implemented. Why? Because marxism is based on hatred for the rich, and when that hatred for the rich meets the greed and self preservation of the rich, all hell breaks loose, literally, and the earth is turned into a living nightmare of mass murder and destruction.

This was a much more simple and joyful explanation of Marxism than a lot of the discussions I have heard. I always say pearls drop from the mouth of Cornell West and almost always Professor Wolff is right on the mark. How I loved this discussion.

Great interview, brilliant duo to interview, however I think it could be improved by slowing the pace a fair bit, especially with two interviewees with so much wisdom to share. Felt like too often they were only just getting started answering the questions before the subject was changed or a new question was asked. Trying to have a short-form interview with just one of these guys is never good enough; short-form with both of them at once?! It’ll never be enough! This coulda been extended to a 2-3 hour long-form discussion & still every minute would be golden. Anyway, glad to have found this channel. Very interesting content, I hope to see you thriving and succeeding!

Problem with collective decision making is nothing ever happens and everything ends up in chaos. Leadership is the rarest quality and collective mentality discourages it. And that's the worst recipe for entrepreneurship. The real problem is the screwed banking / political system and a selected few steamrolling their way through all law and legislation all over the world. It''s global but originating in USA and Europe. This is a power shift from the west to the east. I never seen Richard addressing the real problem head on. I wonder why.

Curb your unsubstantiated slander @charles botha!!
@brianlacy88705 жыл бұрын
@charles botha two points... 1... you can choose to try and diminish the truth or significance of Cornel West's statements by tying them to his price per lecture fee, but do you think that's a valid argument? And if you say yes why? Link- backed only. 2... where the f*** do you get off making a statement that Cornel West does sleep with women, when you have nothing to back up the claim. That is straightforward slander. It makes one seriously question if you have anything honest or sincere or factual to offer. Right? You have to dig for it, but if you are willing and courageous to ask the many why questions behind why the different kinds of Injustice exists in our world, I invite you to explore them.
